Riding East on Friars Rd through New Infrastructure

We're riding east on Friars Rd by Riverwalk, which used to be a golf course, but is being developed into a neighborhood.
It's a protected bike lane, with an on-street painted lane outside the protection. I'll let you be the judge, but the protected area feels a little too narrow to me (much like the old one that was here before). It seems like a series of missed opportunities for improvement, but it's better than nothing.
Here's the story the clip is pulled from with more details: www.sandiegoun...
It looks like Friars Rd is actually the border of D3 and D7, so putting it on both play lists.
Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, and I don't mean to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. The more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalitio...) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulates...)

Ah, the good old "intermittent bike gutter". My favorite place to ride. I guess that I should be happy to have that. Stay safe out there, Adam.

This looks like surprisingly good bike infrastructure for north America. I'm looking forward to trying this.

It's better than nothing, but I think they could have done way more. Once the trees get established on the right parkway, I hope they have a plan to regularly clean what they drop into this bike lane.

That's so bizarre, having a bike lane next to the protected bike path, and also it being that narrow, and then it just stops. I mean at least thwy are trying

Plus the standard bike lane next to it.

It's great that they put protected bike lanes in but it's annoyingly narrow, someone messed up the measurements. I hope they fix it at some point.

I think they just put in what was there before. This road had the same thing before they did all this, and it would get full of debris from Eucalyptus trees that lined the street to the right.

The protected bike lane is definitely a lot more pleasant. I hope they keep the outer bike lane as a median to narrow the road

Like I said, they pretty much just put back what used to be there. A better design is possible, but it seems like they were just lazy about it. I think it's too narrow, but I suppose it's nice to have options with the two different lanes.

hear me out right what if, what if they removed the unprotected bikelane and just made the whole protected bike lane wider

I mean, I'd be fine with that. But I also understand that there are some folks who want to ride on that outside, as they feel trapped between the curbs. Often I disagree with that position, but, honestly, when I used to ride on what was here before (which is the same geometry as this) we had trees all along it that dropped all kinds of leaves and branches into the protected lane, to the point that it didn't feel safe to ride in. The theme, I think, is that we have missed opportunities here.

This might make too much sense.

I switched to Shokz from in- or over-ear headphones and it's awesome.

I have a little Cruzen Tunes speaker that I use sometimes, but I didn't have it on this bike on this day. We have to be able to hear what's around us, is all I'm saying

I agree it looks on the narrow side, but I'm looking foward to trying it out.

It is bizarre that they have put two bike lanes. Why not combine them and make the lanes wider. I've never seen anything like that.

This design is identical to what was here before, when this road was lined with eucalypti trees. In short, they didn't do anything because doing things is difficult, especially for engineers and designers who don't know what life outside of cars is like.

0:21: Wow some idiot doesn't know how to measure at all... distance from the edge of the lane to the centerline should be no fewer than 4' per federal standard and 6' by most state standards...both measured from the centerline to the edge of the roadway, with the gutter not being considered part of the roadway.
