This is without doubt one of my favourite bike videos on you tube I keep coming back to watch this one time and time again beautifully filmed. Wonderful scenery and great music.. Also very inspirational for anyone that rides fixed gear bikes when I first saw this video I went out and purchased a long handlebar for my fixie and pedalled to those hills
I second that brilliant video the Thompson trail handlebar Aaron had on his Mash is one of the reasons why he was able to climb hills so well. plenty of space to lean over the handlebars while climbing
Such amazing footage of beautiful landscapes and sweeping descents! It was also interesting learning about fixed gear riding as I have no experience. Well done!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Most people think urban environments when they consider fixed gear cycling. However, it's possible to enjoy it anywhere as Aaron shows us.
Henry Aaron is a really interesting character it's a shame he doesn't have his own channel because I believe he like yourself has something very different to offer on you tube as far as cycling is concerned, I am loving the whole earth hippy thing, would love to see another collaboration with yourself and Aaron in the future.
My son and all his friends in New York city go everywhere on there fixie's. I use a single speed which has a break more in the early season to get my legs up and going (52 x 15). A lot of people have a flip flop hub on there rear wheel so the can ride fixie or single speed with the same bike. You get a chance try one for awhile they great for building power.
I'm new to fixed riding and love it. My area is not nearly as hilly as this, but far from flat. I need a brake on the steeper hills and have no plans to do without, but I'm working on using it as little as possible. No skidding for me, though! By the way, I hope Aaron didn't go for the 51:17 ratio, which reduces to 3:1. The skid point will always be the same, leading to a lot more tires to buy. 48:17 puts the skid patch all around the tire. Get as far away from a whole-number ratio as you can and you'll be good.
Cool! Thanks for the gear ratio tip. Aaron will have to consider his tire choices carefully. The randonneur tire he currently uses appears to be pretty thick compared to other high performance tires on the market. Even with these tires he still seems to be buying through them quickly. Good luck with your fixed gear adventures!
Great video. Great shots. So how is he braking? I learned to ride as a kid on a cheap single speed with a hub brake. Then graduated to BMX with free wheel with a rim brake. I have zero knowledge on fixed geared bikes other than that.
Hello SFIFAB. His braking comes only from slowing his pedal cadence. The rear cog is "fixed" to the hub, so no freewheel. The attraction of the fixie bike, as I'm sure you know, is in the overall simplicity, no brakes or shifters.
