Christian Livingstone shares his zero-turn mower re-powering project, going from a 12 HP Single cylinder motor to a 20 HP Twin cylinder overhead valve motor, to compensate for a larger mowing deck installation on his 1995 Dixon, model 3304. The video is somewhat lengthy, at about 78 minutes, so there may only be genuine appeal for the true riding mower enthusiasts. But, there is quite a bit of welding and fabrication demonstrated, including a custom, aluminum, diamond plate gas tank, along with a conversion from a vacuum actuated fuel pump to an electric fuel pump. An exhaust modification is made. Best practices for the bending of aluminum sheet to minimize cracking is shown. Some novice wiring and troubleshooting is done. A pulley ratio is changed, along with increasing the engine's top no-load speed to a seemingly modest 3100 RPMs, giving the mower a faster travel speed without outrunning the ability of the blade speed to give a finished cut. The application and use of pre-emergent herbicide is touched upon, along with some brief mention of incidental topics and views, too. A recap is given with rationales for most of the actions taken. On a couple video segments Christian is assisted by a neighbor/friend, who may be the first person in human history to TIG weld for the first time while having someone else doing the filler metal deposition. Otherwise, Christian humorously frames the project as a “Poor Man’s Jay Leno’s Garage: Dixon Mower Re-Power & Mods”.

Hey, thanks for that! I more recently did some new mods to this Dixon mower, and most of it will generalize to other mower makes and models too. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3K-eSl4QAeA.html

What throttle cable is that I have the same mower and motor except with no auto start but cant find the throttle cable

As I recall, I've reused the OEM throttle lever a couple of times by replacing the throttle cable within it by using some of my 1/16" stainless steel TIG wire, and putting a little Z-bend at the end.

How is that oil filter system hooked up, did that come with the engine?

That is an aftermarket remote filter assembly for autos, that I bought for a truck, but never installed on it. So I used it on the mower, since the filter size was about the same diameter. But Briggs also sells similar assemblies for remote oil filter locating on their mowers, which undoubtedly also comes with installation instructions. Otherwise, it has a screw-in plate where the filter normally goes, which has the journals for the two hoses out to the remote filter location. Easy peasey!

Pretty informative video. One thing I would like to ask, is would I be able to briggs opposed twin swap my model 3302 dixon? It has the same 12hp briggs engine that yours did. Thanks in advance! -Matt

Sure, I'm guessing that an opposed twin Briggs motor wouldn't have many challenges being installed where a single was before. It may even be easier than what I did, as some opposed twin have their muffler to one side, if I recall correctly, and that could make things easy, muffler-wise. Those opposed twin Briggs motors are a favorite type to many, since there's no overhead valves.

Here's a little addendum video for this project: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F2WLqb5DdfA.html "Christian Livingstone includes this video as an addendum to his “Poor Man’s Jay Leno’s Garage: Dixon Mower Re-Power & Mods” project. It shows the solutions for solving hard-starting and surging symptoms on Briggs Intek V-Twin motors, namely, valve lash adjustment, some subtle reaming-out of Nikki low-side carburetor jet journals, and a governor adjustment. Though not meant as an exhaustive step-by-step how-to guide, enough demonstration is given that many will undoubtedly find it helpful in solving the same problems with their own motors, but more detail is also given in the earlier, project video itself."

Normally I won't watch a video this long, but I have a Dixon mower and your content is so gooood :))) You have great engineering skills. I would like to know what brand of 12 volt gas pump you are using and who sells them. I can't find any that look like the one you used.

I originally used a cheap, poly, cylindrical one of low-pressure (2-4psi), which worked OK. But not too long after I upgraded to another cheap (around $20), little, box-style one that has a metal shell that is quieter and seems better in quality somehow. I also used rubber isolator mounting washers when I installed the newer one, which may help with vibration and longevity. I don't recall the brand name, but I got it on Amazon. They are listed with various names, but are undoubtedly the same item. Just do an Amazon search for "low-pressure, 12V, fuel pump". They're the squarish one, but not the ones at 4.5-7psi. You'll undoubtedly want the ones at approximately 2-4psi. www.amazon.com/s?k=12V+fuel+pump+low+pressure&page=2&qid=1576721880&ref=sr_pg_1

i use carb cleaner to start my small engines ether is really hard on those small engines. carb cleaner ignites easier than gasoline but not as powerful as ether starting fluid. try it one time and i think you will be a believer.

Hey, thanks for passing along that distinction. I have both on hand, so I will undoubtedly try it and probably shift over to the carb cleaner, as needed.

@@NewJerusalemTimes I forgot to add if you are trying to get a 2 cycle engine started don't use carb cleaner but use spray lubricant. I use the Wally world spray lubricant it ignited easily and you are lubricating the internal engine parts.
