Riding Newman, a 5 year old Grants zebra gelding. In this training session, we demonstrate standing still while being mounted, walking off smoothly and confidently under saddle, confidence with objects (in this case, a shirt) being waved around him and standing on his back.

People saying "You can't ride zebras! They're untameable! They are wild animals!" So were horses. And now they're our trusting companions. This zebra obviously has lots of trust for this girl. Now why is she hopping on and off and doing all this crazy stuff? It's called DESENSITIZING! We all do it to our green horses! Including me! I'm working with a 3 year old newly castrated male horse. He's still got stallion in him. You do that to get used to the pressure on their backs and that you will get off them. You also wave a cloth(I use a grocery bag) to help with spooking.

@TheForklifter
@TheForklifter 8 лет назад
There's a difference between taming and domesticating. She managed to tame the Zebra. In domestocating animals, you exploit their family values. Domesticated animals think you're a weird animal overlord. Zebras don't have this. While they do travel in together, they don't care if someone goes away. They do this for selfish reasons other than caring for each other. Can Zebras be domesticated? Maybe. However, it will be extremely hard to do so.

Some really enjoy what they do and riding exercises can be good physical therapy for a stiff/unbalanced horse as well as general exercise. First generation zebras, yes, it's a very bad idea. They evolved on afica and have a deep instinctual fear of humans, while equines elsewhere in the world do not. If a breeding program was undertaken they could be domesticated through a long period of selected the most docile zebras to breed. This is how wolves became dogs. But it's a very long process, and as far as I'm aware no one has tried to since we already had horses.

Duh. You do know what evolved instincts are, right? There aren't nearly the same amount of large predators in Mongolian Steppe, where the ancestors of the domestic horse came from. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ A time ago when I was a wee lad, my parents got a labrador puppy, of which, I annoyingly kept jumping on its back so I can ride the dog like a horse. Failed numerous times at first but overtime, the dog trusted me and knew I wanted a ride around the living room. Needless to say, when I turned 13, the dog was already 6-7 years old and it was able to ride the dog around the backyard. I weighed 100lbs but good old lab was really strong. Once he turned 8, I stopped jumping on his back and I wanted to let him live his senior years. He lived up to 17 years old and was strong as an ox at that age still but a heart infection was his ending and we could not save him. Vets predicted he could have lived up to 18 or 19 and were suprised the lab lived that long and had really strong muscles for a lab and could not make out why. I told the vets I used to get on its back like a zebra that cannot be tamed but eventually succumb to getting used to it and dog trusted me and did flail me out of its back when he didnt like it. Dog had no spine issues nor any damage. Why did I share this? Because his name was Zebra :( and the moves this trainer did reminded me of it.

"Attempts have been made to train zebras for riding, since they have better resistance than horses to African diseases. Most of these attempts failed, though, due to the zebra's more unpredictable nature and tendency to panic under stress. For this reason, zebra-mules or zebroids (crosses between any species of zebra and a horse, pony, donkey or ass) are preferred over purebred zebras." DERP

ChocolatePoop1301 well they did manage to tame horses when they were just as bad a Zebras so they’re is no way that future generations of people can domesticate Zebras in countries that they grow up without predators eventually they will be tame as Horses are now .

I actually find interesting that its common for tribes to keep any wild animal as a pet. You should see what animals the tribes in the amazon keep, their camp looks like a zoo. So its probably not a new habit for humans to desire exotic pets.

So much for the Guns, Germs, and Steel argument. Zebras may have a reputation for being temperamental, but ancient wild horses probably did too before millennia of selective breeding. If zebras had been domesticated millennia ago, the domesticated ones would probably be just like modern horses.

With all the animals in all the world, horses, camals, donkies, giraffs, elephants, none is more like a horse than a Zebra... Yet, the people in all other parts of the world used the thousands of years to LEARN to ride any animal of that size. If an adult could not ride a Zebra, why not the children in thousands of years. Over the thousands of years, the ankles of the Zebra would have grown stronger, adapting to the culture of being ridden
