Great feedback and very cool bike, thanks Dan 🤙 I couldn't help but chuckle at your "in the spirit of Sean Yates" chase up the hill, great effort 🤣 It looks like I'm not the only one who gets a kick out of passing guys on their wallet stretching carbon bikes while wringing the neck of one of my vintage steel bikes 🤣

Yep - I don`t like to chase down riders as a rule - but carbon is fair game and something just comes over me on a climb.. Dan

That gave you incentive, that poor guy in front of you! He didn’t stand a chance. I bet that wind was a curse, well done on that brute of a hill. Love your stories of Sean. He was a hard man in his day that’s for sure. Thanks for the ride Dan.

GREAT VIDEO DAN ! I hated toe clips also, finally got an old pair of Delta clip less pedals from someone trading in their bike years ago. That is a lovely bike you were riding. . You may not be 20 yrs old , but you still have it in ya ! Looking forward to your next video. All the best !

I’ve just bought myself an Eddy Merkcx Arcoboleno in Gan colours.It came with a tired Record 10 speed groupset,so I’ve swapped that for a Chorus 12 speed.It’s a joy to own and ride,and the 34/34 gearing make the short,steep hills here in NZ a lot more manageable.

@@vintagevelos9517 once you get out of town,it’s easy to find quiet roads. we are surrounded by hills,which suits me perfectly as I like riding up them.We are fortunate to have a Mediterranean climate so I can ride all year often.The classic bike scene is small but thriving,with plenty of opportunities to pick up high end bikes,both locally made and imported.If you ever fancy a northern winter holiday,I definitely recommend NZ

Great video Dan, really enjoyed this one. I personally have an 89 EM Corsa Extra Team Stuttgart made from SLX, so was interested in your feedback to compare to my ride. It’s my favourite vintage ride and agree with all your comments. Descends fantastic and so smooth to ride. By the way, I swapped out to a 13/28 pretty quickly after a similar experience! Keep up the great work 👍🚴🏽‍♂️☕️

I remember the M-71 pedal, where you had to reach down to move a lever to release your cleat. You mentioned 8 speed. Is it 8 speed uniglide, or 8 speed Hyperglide. The outer cog on uniglige screws on, instead of using a lock ring. I still have a Look PP76, and PP96. (black cleats, of course) I still have some of those 7401 and 7402 levers in my parts bin.

LOL on a 21 cassette, When I asked a shop for a custom freewheel to be made for a hilly race a 7sp 13 to 21. Shop asked what do you want a 21 for. How times have changed.

Back in my 6 speed days, I would use a 13-18 in flat criteriums. Years later, when I was buying a 10 speed 12-25, for a hilly race, that shop guy that I knew, asked me, with a laugh, if it was for my mountain bike.

To think I rode 42/52 with 13-21 in the 80's. These days I grovel up the same Cornish climbs with 30/46 and 11-32 😢

I did the same thing in the US, with 7 and 8 speed groups. (with 8 speed, I added a 12). With 9 speed I used a 12-23, on flat or rolling races. Same for 10 speed.

Carbon bikes are too small and fitted in wind tunnels. Having your head out over the steering axis makes riding in a line difficult and high profile rims catch side wind. The number of pro crashes is insane! Nice to see a bike go where it is pointed 😅
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 4 месяца назад
There`s a lot of unsaid things about crashes in the pro peleton - not least a lot of the bikes just don`t descend well - might have to do a video about this subject... Dan

Racers have moved to a more forward position, they use much lower gears and spin the pedals faster... one might theorize that this is because they are much skinnier (look at a 80s pro compared to the concentration camp survivor look a likes in todays peloton) and have manipulated their red blood cell count and this enables them to pedal lower gears faster. But the old school position is so much better looking, take a look at Raul Alcala from the 90s, flat back you could rest a beer on...

I'm 6ft3 to, what size bike would work for you?
@billkallas1762
@billkallas1762 3 месяца назад
It depends on your torso to leg length proportions. Could be anywhere from a 58 to a 60, or even a 62. It also depends on how upright you ride.
