I cannot believe how quiet and steady that train is at 320 kph which is 199 mph. Amazing engineering and technology. Very clean inside the cars and the bathrooms. I think they're working on one. Goes up to 603 kph or 374 Mph. It's crazy how fast it is and I think the new one is run on magnetic tracks. I think there is one that goes up higher to 650 kph
@@brianv1988 the current record is the Japanese maglev at 603 kmh I think, although the operating speed of the Chuo Shinkansen will be 505 kmh. China is working on a faster maglev purely for the ability to boast, I think.
The first time I boarded an E5 at Tokyo station, I was organising my luggage when I looked up and found that the train had already left. I never felt it move. The ride is very smooth and comfortable.
Have been to Japan 6 times always taken the Bullet train at some point. Never had a delayed train and the leg room has always been fantastic even in 2nd class carriage. For the past 6 months I have been travelling from Berlin to Munich every other weekend using Germanys high speed ICE. What a joke. Always late, seats usually have crumbs/litter lying around, hardly any leg room in 2nd class, usually packed with many people having to stand- a total disgrace. I have the utmost admiration for what Japan has achieved with their rail service.
In Australia only one city has rail to airport connection and it takes longer on the train Melbourne to Sydney than to drive. Our trains are stuck in the 1950s!

I have stayed in Tokyo a number of times at the New Otani and travelled extensively on the Shinkansen a very impressive system and speed from cities generally close together and occupied by millions of people i.e. train riders. I tell people if you think the train’s not on time YOUR watch is wrong! But the gov’t drives people to the trains example: takes over an hour to get from the Airport to Tokyo one reason the speed limit on expressways is 80K which is abt 48 mph where we would be traveling at upwards of 65 mph in the USA. Also our big population center cities, where enough people might ride the train, are generally far apart & thus the speed does not help that much! Nice though that you can arrange at the platform 5 minutes before the train is to leave and get on sit down train leaves AT SPEED! No security as the orderly and generally obedient Japanese people don’t cause trouble! US Americans? Gimmme a break we break everything, trash everything and graffiti everything until we then complain about how everything is a mess! That’s you Democrats in your big matchine politics cities with no fair elections and your diversified to death “culture”! I’ll take my Porsche at 75 mph to my office anytime I choose and not miss the train a minute!

It’s unrealistic. Especially for Europe where everything is so close together and where many people live close to the train tracks. 300km/h is max for Europe. Many HS trains in Europe can go 400km/h but it’s limited to 300km/h because of the reasons I mentioned above.
@@bodigames I think that's only true to a certain extent. We have high-speed railway in Europe (e.g. the Thalys), but it is limited due to lack of funding and lack of proper infrastructure. If European governments only cared more about investing in the future, we would not have to take flights from Berlin to Vienna, from Brussels to Zurich, etc. Matter of fact, trains are slow and expensive in Europe but they don't have to be. They could easily replace air travel if only someone took the initiative and made things happen. But lobbying is strong with airlines.

Trains are a huge thing in the UK, bullet trains wouldn’t be popular here as no one is going to pay £180 for a ticket rather than £10 on a normal train, no matter what the speed.
It's actually more than just the train. It's the way the track is constructed and the ability to make it go as straight possible for long periods of time that allow it to go so fast. They also pioneered amazing automated signalling technology as early as the 50s which also allowed the train to be so efficient. Truly every part of the process has been though about and designed to perfection.
It's even more amazing that they build the underwater tunnel for cover that crazy long distance. In the US, you cant even build a 1 mile road without issues.
I don't know why but I'm always fascinated by how neat and tidy everything is in Japan, I wish I could visit it in the future, and possibly live there, I envy it's people for living in such a nice place.
In fairness, people often only see what they look for. In my major U.S. city, all the parts where tourists visit look as neat and as tidy to me as any Japanese train station, but venture a few miles west and it begins to look like photos of Venezuela the U.S. State Dept. trots out to scare children away from socialism … which is funny because Venezuela is where I grew up, decades *before* Chavez’s election, and it was a messy chaotic place with literal dog carcasses strewn over most streets - I kid you not, every few blocks a dead dog, split open on the asphalt and steaming odorously in a sticky crimson pool in the noonday sun … often for days - so of course the U.S. looks clean to me, but then I get photos of Caracas today sent to me by my family in the post, and what do you know: everything looks as neat and clean and tidy and sparkly as a Japanese train station … but my cousins’ tween children are obsessed with yakuza movies, which portray Japan as a gritty violent trash-strewn hellhole! And what do my Japanese friends complain about? About Japan’s rigidity, conformity, xenophobia, racism, and culture of tolerated sexual assault; they all want to move … to Paris, which is a city I love, so I almost hate to tell my Japanese friends: because Paris has a culture of overpriced pay-toilets - anyplace you want to urinate, aside from in ancient public _pissoirs,_ you usually have to pay between €4.50 and €18 - people sneakily pee wherever they can for free, and so the *whole beautiful city* is blanketed in a low-level stench of urine which it takes *days* to get used to … the urine stench is almost like a visible haze and a sticky film over everything you touch. My point being, it’s all in where you look and how you look!

I traveled to Japan to go snowboarding once a year before the pandemic. I hated to take the train because, with my two pieces of luggage, it was not fun at all to walk a half-mile underground, up and down platforms. I prefer flying or taking a long-haul bus in Japan with luggage.

I rode the shinkansen years ago from Tokyo to Iwakuni . They called it the bullet train back in the 80's. It was fast, clean and absolutely on time... A great experience I will never forget

I dont often say this, but this is one of the BEST travel videos i have ever watched, if i wasent so depressed all the time and i could learn japanese, i would love to go and live in japan for a year or so, not just to go for 1 week but to really experience the country, the bullet train, the authentic sushi, the robot waitresses at restaurants, the school girl dancers at clubs, renting a girlfriend, all these weird things us westerners find but in japan its normal, maybe one day i will be courageous and do it.
I’ll be honest, the best way to learn a language is immersion. If you’re struggling to learn just immerse yourself in that language. You will be forced to learn to be able to get around. When everyone around you speaks the language you learn it much much quicker.

Such a great video! Reminds me of all the great times I've been on the Shinkansen. I play in a band and we have always relied on the Shinkansen to travel between Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Hiroshima to play our shows. I hope that we can come back again soon and explore the cities north!

Nice video (I did the same trip a few years ago). One important note (at min. 13:02): the Seikan tunnel is not only the longest rail tunnel in Japan: it is also the longest underwater tunnel (of any kind) in the world, longer than the Channel Tunnel. And before the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel it was also the longest tunnel of all (including above water)

Occasionally have the pleasure of talking to the Japanese train representatives in Boston. Lots of fun listening about their trains systems. One thing to note is they are working on ways to make the trains quieter from the outside. Notice the sound barriers along much of the route. High speed trains works well in Japan because they have clusters of cities not too far from each other. People use them for commuting.
The U.S. also has clusters of cities - MAJOR cities! - not too far from each other. So a single uninterrupted high-speed rail line from Los Angeles to New York City might not be a practical place to start building our own high-speed rail network, but there are at a minimum 20 cities along the northeast corridor well-worth connecting, and about 12 to 16 in the Midwest with Chicago as a hub, California obviously could connect loads of cities … and while the U.S. South may be its own special flavor of underdeveloped Hell, surely they’ll outgrow their donkey carts soon.

In the states, we have Amtrak, which while it isn't as fast it's terribly underrated. The views on some of the routes are incredible. you just need a massive time commitment since the US is so damn huge.
@@VuQuang1973 In it's current state we don't REALLY need it. It's a novelty to allow you to enjoy the views across the country while traveling. It could become practical if the trains become fast like in asia or europe. In that case you could visit a neighboring city for cheaper than a plane, and faster than a car.

I really enjoyed this video. I rode Skinkansen from Toyko to Osaka and this video does a very accurate job showing the experience. I especially enjoyed the view from outside the train as it passed in the station. I saw that at Yokohama before I had ridden on the bullet train and it was scary but exciting. WOW!!! I am always so impressed with how clean EVERYTHING is, inside and outside the train. This is amazing! Sitting here in America, I feel safe inside these trains? I know that sounds strange but if I were in Japan, I would feel safer inside the train rather than out on the streets. These are so nice I dont want to get off. If I ever make it to Japan I want to go straight from the Airport to a train. From the Airport by train to one end of Japan to a Ferry boat then straight to the other end of Japan. From that end of Japan straight back to the Airport by train then leave. Is that possible? Oh yes it is. I would love doing that so much..Riding a train from one end of Japan, a Ferry to the other end of Japan then a train back to the Airport would be the best vacation ever. Thank you.
Japan is super safe. And every where is clean and orderly. They are the politest people on the planet too, manners are very important. It is so easy to travel around. It works.
You would be safe on an American train. Who said you wouldn’t? Are you talking safe as in criminals on the trains or you’ll catch something? No matter where you go in this world, you can get sick from a cold, the flu or the covid from just sitting by someone. It doesn’t have to be on a train. I’ve been on plenty trains in America, and they are all very cleaned and very safe. Have you even been on any trains in the U.S.? It’s so clean and fun to see the country. They have to keep the trains clean, sanitized and comfortable but it has always been that way. There’s also full meals served on the American trains or you can bring your own snacks. My mom and step dad and my uncle took an Amtrak train across the country to Florida to visit my brother and his family, and they were comfortable and they said they had great service and enjoyed the views. They got to stop at different states and walk around for a bit and she would take the train again. My husband and I have been on a Princess cruise train in Alaska that took us to Anchorage and it was amazing to see such beautiful views and we all were served a delicious lunch. Our trains in the U.S. have special tours in different parts of America. And you would be surprised how many tourists from other countries are on these trains because they want to see America. Just like we want to visit different countries. Trains have always been extra clean even before the pandemic, also because any company or business gets random checks from the health department too. My dad, sister, her husband and her in-laws were in Japan for a Christian concert and they were able to go on the bullet train and they loved it. Just don’t go in the Summer time, too hot and very humid in Japan.

I really want to visit Japan, such a cool place. I love the culture and food, when I visited Switzerland I was amazed how clean it was kept but Japan would be even more so. Big difference from where I live in London haha

Japan's rail system- both intra city and inter city is the best in the world by every measure: punctuality, availability, safety, service, cleanliness, and design. I've used rail systems in Australia, Singapore, and Germany extensively, but nothing compares to it. And the reason? It's cultural. You cannot compete with culture.

Imagine when the Sapporo extension is complete, I'd imagine JR would organize a celebration Shinkansen that would go all the way from Sapporo to Kagoshima-Chuo! That would be a ride to experience, albeit one very, very long trip.
I've made this trip (Tokyo to Morioka, and back)! I travelled for a concert (Oomori Seiko), and back again on the last train. This was in October of 2019, and I got back to where I was staying in Hatagaya less than an hour before that big typhoon hit! Unforgettable... It's a great way to travel: fast, but also comfortable and relaxing.
The Japanese trains are amazing, just the looks are cool, they've always been so far ahead in these trains, I'd love to ride one someday, and 200 dollars is not bad considering the distance. Thank you for this video, I really enjoy these trips. 🙏
The experience sounds great, especially the quality of the ride. But for a reserved, fixed-time ticket it seems pricey. While the German high-speed train system is crappier in many respects, you can pre-book (reasonable) rides from 55 USD or get a flex ticket for 160 USD
Always remember to buy a JR Pass if you are visiting Japan. It’s 250USD for a 7 day pass (up to 21 days) and you can take most trains without having to pay extra. Can’t get on the Nozomi Shinkansen or Mizuho though but the semi-express shinkansen are plenty fast.

It was January when I caught this train, and there was snow on the ground from Sendai. It's a great ride. And the train to Sapporo travels through beautiful country. I enjoyed the shinkansen's passing the station - wahoo!

We rode this train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Fantastic ride, like a babies cradle. Our daughter and family lived there for two years. Loved our visit there.

I love that you can really get a sense of speed by how the camera's sensor is causing the image to skew pretty heavily at times. One day, one day I will make it a mission to take a ride on a bullet train

I'm from China, China's CR400 model bullet train does 350km/h, and also incredibly stable and quiet in the cabin. It takes 4h30min from Beijing to Shanghai via Nanjing and Wuxi (about total 1100km ). Wish you one day can come and take a ride.
One more reason to love Japan, it seems so futuristic, movie-lke. Yet, escape to the countryside and you can drop backi hundreds of years or more in architecure, crafts, performance, even spirituality.
