We agree that it saved a night's accommodation! It was one of the main reasons why we chose to do this over flying! Saves a bunch of money that way! 😊😊

Thanks for the update. 27 years ago I did the same journey. I went second class because I wanted to see the countryside in the daytime. No western toilet on board. The conditioning was cold! Transport from the train station in Chiang Mai into town was either elephant or samlor (tricycle pedal cab). I'm happy some things have changed for the better.

I went from Hua Lamphong to Surin in 2nd class sleeper last year. It was very comfortable and I would choose it again. The track is narrow gauge and with the old fashioned stations, it's like a giant heritage railway.
@mytube9182
@mytube9182 11 месяцев назад
It does like a heritage and it is! Most of railways in Thailand were started the construction around 120 years ago, and by the Thais themselves, not by westerners.

You have to try the 2nd class sleepers . I find them much more cosy and easier to sleep . These new trains are awesome . The older trains much rougher but still enjoyable . Can’t wait for the new line to be open . We live in Hua Hin now and the new Hua Hin station although not yet completed is huge !!

I'm shocked the train arrived only 3mins late, it's notorious for arriving much later. And your AC problem wasn't the train, it's that Thais love really cold AC

My wife and I caught this train in 2008 however we couldn't get a sleeper so we had to sit up all night. Thank God we didn't have a return ticket because it was awful. The train shook us from side to side and back and forth. The toilet was deep in 'water' (hopefully) and my wife refused to go. All in all an experience that we will never forget.

Having ridden Thai train since I was young, I have seen such an impressive progress Thailand's train facilities made during the past decades. Most cars have been re-painted, refurbished, and modernized than ever, and with the ongoing construction of a double-track system in Northern, Northeastern, and Southern train routes, trains are now running less late (in routes that double-tracks are operating). I took a train to Nakhon Si Thammarat this week and it arrived at the destination with only 10 minutes delay which was super impressive, given that it would have been delayed up to 3 hours had the double-track system not been built between Nakhon Pathom to Chumpon.

Honestly, when travelling alone I always prefer second sleeper class over first class (if you do not want to book the whole first class cabin for you for nearly double price). The reason is in second class you have more privacy with the curtains in front of your bed. In first class when travelling with somebody else you do not have that. You always have to "negotiate" when to eat and when to switch of light.... Yes, in first class you get food to your cabin.... but difficult to eat as you have it to balance on your knees if you do not have the window table. Much easier to go to the dining car and eat at a table (dining cars on many services resumed in the beginning of 2023). And: If you have the upper berth it is really difficult to get up there if you are 50+ especially.

I have traveled (1st class) on the Thai trains numerous times and really enjoyed it. The only problem we found were the cockroaches! The old trains were the worse and when the new trains arrived we tried again in 2017 and thought they would be minus bugs, but those critters had taken up residence just as before. I hope they have now dealt with the problem.
