I had never seen a film in which my father had been. I took my mother and sister to the Film Institute in London and booked two films for them to watch. "The White Sheik" in which my father plays an Arab villain; and Nacht Geshtalten or the "the Step of the Cat" which was about villains on the waterfront and smugglers. Another British film was "Boadicea". Then this prize winning film by Cavalcanti came up,-one of two, the first being "Rien Que Les Heures" and the other "Yvette". My father, Clifford McLaglen plays the naughty sailor. He is one of five brothers who became actors and also played in vaudeville. The most famous, Victor McLaglen, began in 1920 with "The Call of the Road", and after many films and with famous co-stars such as with Marlene Dietrich, he eventually went to America and made many films, expecially with John Ford the director, and won his Oscar with "The Informer" in 1935, where in some scenes they ad-libbed after discussing the scene. Victor went on to make many films with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, and also Shirley Temple. Clifford McLaglen made most films in France and Germany before the war. They were mostly silent, and the first Talkie from Germany had talking in only a third of the film, called "The Land Without Women", or "Das Land Ohne Frauen". Cynthia Allen McLaglen

I'd read about this film in Georges Sadoul's entry on Cavalcanti, but never thought I'd be able to see it.... Thanks!

It is not the first one: MANHATTA was made before, and who knows which other city films had been made before.
