Great video. Great way to get back to the basics for the new subscribers coming on and good review for the long time subscribers. Way to keep your base interested. The best advice that you have given for hunting scopes is high magnification is rarely beneficial. eEven tho it is tempting to buy the 5-25 power for not much more money. Generally the lower magnification usually always has a bigger field of view which will make it easy to find your target quickly. (target acquisition) If you have a 5-25x 50 scope set on 20 power and you shoulder your gun at a 100 yard distance target you can only see 4-5' of view through the scope but on 5 power you can see up to 30' area though the scope out at a 100 yards. So for me a lower magnification scope like 2.5-10 or 3-9 power scope is always better for a hunting rifle as rarely you are shouting much past 300 yards anyway. A good quality glass scope can give you a good image out to and beyond 500 yards anyway. Additionally most calibers after 400 yards becomes more about bullet drop and wind drift anyway. On the other end of the spectrum if all you do is punch paper targets from a bench rest at long distance with no worries about the target running behind a plum thicket a high power magnification scope could be for you.

Why would ranging targets only work for one magnification? Zeiss gives the reticle characteristics for different magnifications. Does it mean these characterostics may only be accurate for the magnification the reapective scope is calibrated at? Is is unreliable for other magnifications? Why?

Great video as always Joe. One tip I can give. For those looking at budget scopes. If you're stuck between two scopes at the same price range, one has EVERY popular feature on the market and the other is basic. I can almost guarantee that the basic scope will have better glass, at least in my experience. You don't get the world for nothing, SOMETHING has got to suffer to let them pack the features in at that price.

Fantastic video Joe. You cover all the basics in < 9 minutes. Since you asked for comments, I like small, lightweight scopes like my Leupold 3-9x33 EFR. One big advantage of a smaller objective is that you can mount the scope close to the bore with low rings. This keeps your bullet trajectory close to the crosshairs. Lightweight: I shoot off-hand, not from a bench, so minimizing weight is important to me. Lastly, love the 4K resolution of your videos!

Good explanation. One thing to mention for beginners, if the distances on your side focus don't line up with actual distance, IT'S NOT BROKEN. If your target is 300 yards and your side focus shows 350 for example, there's no need to send it back for repair. Just slowly turn the knob to where your target comes into focus and don't worry what number is on the turret.

When I was a beginner, I used to crank the hell out of the adjustment ring closest to my eye, not the magnification ring, I knew that was zoom. Later, I found it just changed the focus on my reticle or crosshairs, making them appear sharp and bold, they didn't do anything for the distance focus or image sharpness thru the scope. It took years to figure that out. Joe - Man you just covered so much in this video, you provided great information, thank you brother

I forget how many decades ago I found this guy on RU-vid, but I have been a better shot and depending on what I am doing, shooting for practice, hunting, or competition shooting this man knows what he is talking about. He has videos on just about everything on the market. You don't need a 3000 dollar high power scope for hunting or target practice. Now depending on what you want to do with your firearm this guy I guarantee that he has done a video on it. If you watch the video and carefully listen to it and what he says, you are going to be on track for getting the best optic for the money and use that you need it for. The best part is if you have a good sense of humor you are going to have a great time figuring out what, how much, how big, and what type of optic you are going to need and get the right one without breaking the bank. God bless, shoot straight, and be all you can be and enjoy doing it. Have a good morning and a great weekend! 💯💥

Joe, you ARE the reason WHY I bought 3 scopes from Arken Optics and why I have several other optics on my list for purchase! Also, if I'm gonna get some much needed advice on optics, it's gotta be the man with one eye! "Why?" Because when the body looses one of it's 7 senses, the other senses have to overcompensate for the loss. With that, I know the right eye has to REALLY work to make up for the loss of the left. I am in NO WAY making light of your condition, but because of that, coupled with your delivery and sense of humor, I follow your every word when it comes to optics!

Great vid Joe, excellent advice. I'm in the UK and the number of air rifle shooters I see out with 6-24x56 scopes on top of their sub-12 ft lb rifles just cracks me up. Just insane. The furthest we shoot out to is 50 yards, you don't need to be able to read the label on the rabbit's underpants before you shoot it. On the advice of one of your vids from a while back I tried a 10x44 fixed scope on my Weihrauch and my accuracy went through the ceiling, just so much light, such a clear field of view, I wasn't farting about trying to get the parallax right and it makes my rifle lighter.

I decided to give Arken a shot an bought an epl4 4x16. As soon as it arrived I ripped it open and looked at my neighbors brick house. I looked for around 5 seconds, immediately sat the scope down, walked over to my computer and put my brand new PST gen 2 online. It sold in less time than it took me to attach all the goodies to my scope and mount it. It is amazingly clear and just an absolute beautiful optic in general. My first Arken and will not be my last. P.S. Have also had the pleasure of emailing and texting and they reply very quickly and are a great bunch of guys in general. At least the 2 I’ve personally spoken with.

My 2 cents on SFP vs. FFP - The downside to FFP in a variable power scope especially with large range like 5 or 6 zoom range, the reticle becomes difficult to pick up at shorter ranges in poor light conditions. My choice is to use a SFP scope with a 3 zoom range. Of course I don't shoot at super long distances. I hunt only to put food on the table and meat in the freezer. I don't need a 5-7 thousand dollar scope to shoot 600-1200 yards (or meters) with cartridges that cost 3-4 $ each. I don't have any problem with you doing that if it's what you like.

I really appreciate your videos Joe 👍 One thing we should address in determining your scope budget is, the duration of time spent looking through that scope. The longer you sit & look intently through a scope, the higher quality, the glass needs to be or your eyes will get strained & you can get headaches. Imagine - Walking through the woods on a squirrel hunt. Your eye is on & off the scope briefly. You can use a cheap scope. But peering at an elk 300 yards away, waiting for him to quarter for a good shot, your eye could be in that scope a long time, you cannot have your eyeball freaking out, when it’s time to take the shot. Not to even mention scope reliability on a $7000 hunt. Informal target practice, you can rest your eyeball whenever you want. Cheap scope is fine. Competition shooting, your eye can be stuck to that scope steady for 5 to 20 minutes. You better have good glass or your last shots will be shit. Gophers- sitting at the edge of a field popping a gopher & waiting for another to come up, pretty intermittent viewing, cheap is fine. Prairie dogs, you could potentially have your eye to glass all afternoon. That glass better be good. Long periods of viewing can be very straining on your eyes & a cheap scope can make you dizzy or even sick. Analyze your intended use. No sense sticking a $500 scope on a $150 gun to shoot squirrels in the yard.

I think using scopes has a learning curve. There is nothing wrong with cheap scopes, they grow with our skill and commitment if we decide to become life long shooters. I can't name a single person that goes and buys a premium scope as their first scope, besides some ultra rich guy that just happens to buy the best rifle hanging on the gun store wall. Even then, starting with the basics and building knowledge is far more valuable. Sure, looking at all my scopes, my low / mid range scope would buy one premium scope, but they fill the need on all the other firearms in my safe. I have also learned buy the best mounts, they make it so much easier swapping rifles and having a rock solid base holding your scope to your rifle. Another must have is an inch lb torque wrench, so many people have issues just because their mounting screws are loose. Last thing, try to mount your scope as level as possible to your rifle, this is critical the further you shoot
@tommykawasaki9676
@tommykawasaki9676 Год назад
@@wowguy3562 right on & well said. 👍 There is a learning curve & after 40 years I’m still learning. Torque driver & I now lap every set of rings. Put on 100 scopes without lapping, but one gave me trouble & now it’s just standard procedure.

I usually buy in the low-price line of a quality brand of scope. I give up a few doodads and whatnots, and probably some low light performance, but I still get the first-class warranty, fog proof, weather proof, multi-coating, reliable adjustments, and durability of the top-end scopes. My variable scopes are usually never changed except a little play time at the range. Hey, scope makers, it's time to bring back fixed-power scopes in lower magnifications, 2x, 2.5x, 3x, 4x. Lower cost, lower weight, more light passage. These will cover close to 90% of hunting, darn near a 100% east of the Mississippi. Some varmint shooting and some western big game are about the only exceptions.

I dont know if others have experienced this but after mounting a scope I usually center my reticle with windage and elevation. Take a shot or boresight it to see how close I am to point of aim. I've had two Remingtons 700s in the past that shot 10 inches low at 100,would have used up all my elevation to correct. Why I use Burris Signature rings with the different inserts to correct any large discrepancy rather than internal adjustments and they don't leave ring marks if I want to change or sell the scope .

Selection, in my experience, has everything to do with what you want to use it for, and how serious you are about learning to properly use optics. For learning how to properly use a optics without breaking the bank, I use Simmons Pro Target 4-16 X 40mm with some cheap monstrum rings and a cheap Amazon scope level all on a 22LR. Not perfect, but it's got all the right features to teach new comers how to properly use optics. My shotgun scope is a fixed power Sight Mark Coretx 4X32mm AR223. Works great for slugs and "long range" buckshot. I've got others for precision work such as Arken and SWFA. In my experience if you are serious about optics and precision shooting, aside from the Simmons training setup I mentioned above(and maybe 1 or 2 other setups), the budget starts at about $300 MSRP. Research and shop around and you might be able to find a sweet deal for 25% to 30% off that MSRP price maybe.

I'm a fan of the ProTarget myself. Mildot reticle and exposed and dialable elevation turret. Really good scope that won't break the bank. I feel that 90% of people are buying 1000% more scope than what they actually need or will fully utilize.

Very well designed and read video my friend, I have forgotten so much over the Decades about Dope and Optics and worst of all my favorite Mils. I only have one good Optic and should I try to get a backup if I happen to drop my Rifle or just change it up.? I was always Issued what I needed in the early 90’s and just got back into Shooting. Thank you Mr. Rhea for all your valuable Intel. Semper Fidelis

Hey, nice video, I recently moved away from a digital night vision scope to a conventional optic scope (got myself a good quality German scope) in regards to illumination would say most of my hunting is at dusk or dawn in Australia due to the climate (a lot of night hunting) so will need to spotlight at times and illumination is important down here👍

I've been told that My Burris E1 is to cheap of a scope , However They offers something to me that I don't find in any other scope . Main thing for me is the fineness of the reticle all the other things in there for elevation etc. is just icing on the cake. BTW I own 9 of them on a huge array of calibers and they all work flawless. The fact that is is only 3x9 and the fact that they are less than $200 is irrelevant. They just work. Also I have killed tons of game with them. Thank you for the video's You are a straight shooter I like that.

I'm down the scope rabbit hole at the moment.. looking for a fairly high mag FFP for a 22lr build I'm doing. Was tossing up between the Zero Tech and Match Pro.. then moved to the Element Titan.. now I think I am settling on the Athlon either the Ares BTR G2 or the Midas Tac... Issue I have is I cannot see them in a shop and look through them, I need to order online so really appreciate your great honest review's Joe.

Cyclops thanks for the information. I've been trying to buy the perfect scope for a bargain. And I've found out the only more money you spend the better the performance. For hunting Leopold vx 5's are awfully nice but awful spendy. For target shooting Athlons in Argos, Helos are pretty darn good and don't break the shooting account 😅. But your information on light and bell size was very helpful. Thank again!!

Thank you very much for your videos i discovered a few weeks ago (and suscribed). It helped me to choose a scope for my project to customize my Schmidt Rubin K31. I'm not more able to shoot with the original diopter because of eyes matter, so i decided to buy a good scope for that amazing rifle. I'll get a Delta Javelin 5x30-56 with an Audere scope mount, through your advices 🤩. Sorry for my english, i'm french and i learned english 55 years ago
