Met Phil, he is just a fantastic person, NAM show one year and I quite literally bumped into him at the Jackson booth. I happened to be holding a PC1. He sat down and went over the guitar with me, just a great guy and a great player. Love seeing him continuing to be successful
He's tuned to E flat, so they're similar to 11's in E. I use 12's tuned to D, which are almost dead on to 10.5 sets. If your playing style is really hard and you beat a guitar (like me) they work great. Otherwise light strings sound horrible when you beat them hard. But....every one plays what woks for them....no two are alike.
The One aint that the truth! I was thinking that same thing! Im a .09 guy and always have been, and i cant even tolerate .10s at all! I couldnt imagine his gauge
I can't believe his strings, .013 and his action is pretty high! I don't like to work that hard on guitar! My .009's are great, plus my gear gives me great tones!
13s are easy you just have to play them enough. Doesn't matter what gauge you use, you get used to what you use. I have trouble going back to 9s because it feels sharper on the fingers when i jump back to it.
Great rig rundown - impressive collection, those PC-1s are awesome. Phil seems like a really personable and unpretentious guy, and to boot Def Leppard have rocked for years.
I’ve seen him in plenty of interviews, as well as talking to fans on the street, and he’s always super friendly and sweet. Just a great person all around.
Phil’s playing on the Mirror Ball album brought me back to Def Leppard as a fan. I took like a few years off, but hearing his leads live just made me remember why I loved this band!
Me too! I was always a huge DL fan since High & Dry, have seen them eight times in concert since ‘83. But more of a casual fan the past 20 years. But recently got back into them again and I just can’t get enough! They are a rare band of guys who are true friends and whose music and talent easily passes the test of time! I just love them to pieces. 💗
he did a 2nd updated rig and showed off his guitars then for the last half his tech Scott Appleton (the same man who works for Alex Lifeson of Rush) talks about the rack amps and stuff
And both of them are Monster innovators, clearly very smart guys (obviously May, what with his PhD and all..). Cool tidbit! And also not surprised! Good stuff
Great vid... Phil's a nice guy, and the flamed and quilted maple on those Jackons is beautiful... highly figured maple necks and fretboards is a sign of real quality (and expense!)
He IS, after all, very dry and British. He also loves multiple places like Illinois, Iowa, Spain, Japan, Australia, Canada and Pennsylvania. Even California where he now resides (30 minutes away from the Jackson Custom Shop).
I saw Def Leppard at the Bone Bash the weekend before last. The dude was shirtless through the whole set and the MILFs and Cougars in the crowd were going crazy!
These are hands down the best interviews out there. Not just for the gear, but for the format. She did little talking, great info being shared, and just 1 "fluff" question on the end for a smile. I hate seing interviews of my favorite musicians and they ask "how did you meet", "who's the messiest on tour"..
One of the best rig rundowns I've seen. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. I also liked how Phil took the time to do the rundown himself. 13 gauge?! Daaaaang.
Just brought back bad memories of mushy thin tone for me. Get in touch on my channel if you want my original shitbox belt-clip ch.rev. switching plastic overated rubbish.
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Eliseo Randy I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Rebecca, Do you play guitar? I was wondering because you ask all of the right "guitar" questions. You have a great job being able to interview people like Phil Collen. PG Rocks!
I’ve noticed the titanium in his guitars. I have those upgrades in my dean Razorback v. The titanium sounds amazing without killing the bottom end. Cleans sounds so crisp and very bellsy and with distortion it sounds amazing too
I couldn't attend the show but I'm close enough to the fairgrounds where I could hear them play while I was outside for some late-night grilling on deck. The crowd sounded INSANE.
Love to hear that he's using the stock JMP-1. Dunno if that remained the case forever, as I've always seen him name-dropped as a Voodoo client, but the fact that he relied on the OG unit onstage even for a little bit is a testament to how sick these units are.
When is she coming to do my rig rundown? "Say Guuurl! I have a total stock Epiphone Les Paul and I play on an Ipod on Garageband.". More rundowns with her please!!!
Most all these rig rundown vids I noticed something. 3 big rigs stuffed with equipment. Signal goes through 14 miles of wiring, hundreds if not thousands of circuits, filters,eq after eq,compressed, echoed, reverbed ,flanged, split, boosted, preamped and then ran through a flux capacitor and toaster oven for good measure. Then the artist talks about how they like keeping their "tone" simple.Ha. I like when he talks about the weathered guitar tone sounds better than the others. You think that signal coming out that jack and through all the above gives a rats ass.
On stage they have to imitate their old records' sounds, that's where the millions of electronics come in. Have you heard his modern stuff? Or when he writes at home? That's what he's referring to. Playing the hits from the 80's and making it sound like the albums everyone knows is anything but simple.
Aiming Wanderously I am not ragging on the guy. I have been collecting effects pedals since the early 80s and have enough to open a small store. In my man cave I run stereo to a Marshall YJM and a Mesa. I have "thinned" down my pedalboard and now down to,lets see 12! Mostly overdrives and vintage Electro Harmonix pedals all running through a bypass looper cause I like that clean straight to the amp tone also! I probably have about 50 feet of cable.
Noting that this is a ‘vintage’ interview, Phil Collins is such a nice guy and truly a great example of the best of guitarists. Not afraid of technology and just going for the thing that works for him. Always been one of my favorite guitar heroes. The interviewer was a bit starstruck I think but she handled this much much better than I could have lol.
@timeforachange12--- Lmao, this guy has made millions with that right hand technique, you should be so lucky... Why don't we see you on tour making millions?
I went for a job interview a couple of years ago, the two Guys that interviewed me looked like Phil Collen and Bobby Charlton. It was a crap job, I turned it down.
ce hayes Rockman is a rack mounted amp and cab simulator. Tom Scholz of Boston invented it and used it in most of the album's. Hysteria was recorded using the Rockman Headphone Amp sound.
I was kinked into using an original Tom Scholtz Rockman, tiny little thing, a switch for CH. Or rev , ...hated it. Fizzy, thin, noisy & 'unmusical'. No separation, a mushy sound. Altogether quite disappointing. And yet, the next person may love the thing, get great results. This is why I love what we do...
I've watched a couple of these rig rundowns and Phil is the ONLY one where he actually shows her his rig. All of the other ones are their guitar techs that show them their rig.
Phil, I bought my son a Xiphos, Ibanez which changes colour red / green, he's colour blind too! He can't see it either! Hehe!.. The Jackson's with the reverse headstocks look awesome! Txs for the rig rundown too!
I like the strat style headstock better then the pointy ones from the 80s. I use to like em but im pretty sick of that style now days and i think the fender is alot more classy.
I've bought a couple of Jackson's recently and had them in the past.. I've seen Ibanez and others, but it's Jackson I gravitate towards. I bought 2 used Jacksons off ebay a JS32 Dinky which needs a new bridge and I've Dimarzio's I'll get put in. It's now become my go to guitar.. The other jackson I bought was a Jackson JS32 Kelly.. No doubt I'll swap those pickups out for Dimarzio's.. Dimarzio Tone Zone (bridge) and Air Norton (neck).. I've a Tokai Love Rock which has got Dimarzio Super Distortion (bridge) & Super 2 (neck) both humbuckers coil tapped.
Seems like a very lovely person... and what an absolutely pretty face... Rebecca Dirks! Wish she still interviewed. Phil Collen... nice guy and good player. I miss the 80's. I miss Rebecca Dirks too!!!
That cameleon stain is awesome. Thanks phil. I borrow alot of your technique. Thick picks, strings big necks being my preference.. maybe I never had a choice.
