A friend asked me about 20 years ago if I wanted to go see Jerry Douglas at a small club in Asheville, NC. I'd heard a little of his music and liked it so I said yes. He was playing that night with Russ Barenberg and Edgar Meyer, and I was blown away. During the break, my friend asked if I wanted to meet them; Hell, Yes. Went back stage and my friend talked dobro with Jerry for about 15 minutes, and it was just like this video. It was like you'd known him all your life, just laid back and having fun. I've been a huge fan ever since. Got to see him play with Bela Fleck in Hickory, NC several years later; just the two of them. I don't think I'll ever see two instrumentalists like them ever again. Incredible.
Jerry is as friendly and humble as he is skilled. I met him last year after a show and shook the hand of the greatest resonator guitar player I have ever seen. Keep killing it, Jerry.
Jerry Douglas is such a gentleman. Modest in equal proportion to his vast talent. I've been a huge fan since seeing him on BBC TV on The Transatlantic Sessions, playing with Celtic musicians like Ally Bain and Julie Fowlis. I was blown away. Of course, I'd been hearing his playing on all sorts of stuff without knowing who it was, but that was when I found out his name and couldn't get enough after that.
No doubt he will be over again for another Transatlantic Sessions. I'm sure it was also the first time I heard him play when it was filmed at Montgreenan Mansion House Hotel in Ayrshire back in the mid 90s.
Jerry is one of my all time favorites. Regardless of genre or instrument, he is just flat out one the best living musicians, period. And the cherry on top...he seems like such chill, down-to-earth dude. Respect!
That Tony Rice Unit album, Manzanita, is peak bluegrass in my opinion. Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and so many others, all of them stone-cold legends on their instruments. Tony's done some interesting work, check out Cold on the Shoulder and his work with Dave Grisman as well.
@@Hearsticles there's a live show I found somewhere, I think it's just titled " Live-4-96" as nd it's magic. Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Victor Wooten and Sam bush I think....it's just one of those shows that makes you wish someone would hurry up and build Time-Machine.
The device that swaps between the two most common slide tunings is a brilliant idea! Though probably only suits lap playing with the roller nut. Jerry's played in Ireland a few times. I remember seeing him on a local folk music program there and thinking "Hey, that guy looks familiar"!
Having watched so many of these, I love John's total enthusiasm. There's a joy there which is infectious. Never really been a slide guitar fan previously, but this vid was a pleasure to watch. Jerry is a gentleman.
As usual, John is all over it with this interview. I am partial to all instruments played in the prone position. I am really happy to see someone spend some time with Jerry Douglas. When I started playing the reso I asked for recommendations from every source I could find and they all pointed to that Nashville/Fishman pick up/JD AURA pedal set up that had just come out and you can't beat it. Good to see he is still using the product he endorsed. I hadn't heard that description of the R&D he went through before - loved it. Also a great move to go over to the BEARD guitars. Gibson dropped the ball there! I will eventually go for one of his guitars from Beard. Another awesome job John, thanks. (oh, I forgot - do you include the reso among your other slide skills?)
Such a great guy and such an amazing talent. So refreshing in today’s world of egos so often larger than talents. Totally agree about Trucks and I especially liked John’s comment about Duane Allman being Buddy Guy had he lived longer, as I think Buddy Guy is the greatest guitarist ever.
Jerry's a legend there's no doubt about it. I love his stuff from back in the day with Sam and Tony and all the greats we know. It's the building blocks of the next generation. I'm also diggin' that he's doing the electric thing and playing with some of the younger generation from time to time. He's like a modern Miles Davis of doboro.

I first became aware of Jerry when he played on the early Transatlantic Sessions and have admired his wonderful playing since. This video shows what a lovely, humble guy he is too. Thanks for it all Jerry
I’ll be that guy, another complete omission of any discussion of, or passing reference to, the L body Scheerhorns. I’ve read some forums about his departure from them supposedly due to logistical issues with getting a signature guitar done, but I am left wondering why they’re apparently not worth a mention, not even thrown a bone in this discussion. To me it seems more like there was a problem that’s very personal that remains a mystery. All that being said, I love his work with AKUS and others, what a genius musician and amazingly talented and influential trailblazer he has been.
I totally agree with the comments saying Jerry comes across as a really nice guy. And I was impressed with his apparent disdain that Gibson got very greedy with pricing his signature dobro model. But then as he is touting the Beard guitar, one might expect a reasonable price. I checked online prices for the Jerry Douglass model Beard resonator. Very disappointed to see hovering between $5K and $6K, even for used ones. On a related note, Beard does have his name on some GoldTones, but as a seasoned, professional musician who gave the GoldTone brand a try, I found the craftsmanship to be seriously inferior.

Have you ever played the Duesenberg lap steel or do you own one with string benders? I have one on order supposed to be here at the end of February 2023.
Flux: I love your rig-rundown. It's very helpful to know. Very informative. One thing I would like to know,. Something I've always wondered: Do you, or have you ever played pedal steel? Also, do you play non-pedal eight-string? What are your open tunings and gauges for 8-string non-pedal, if you do? (FWIW: I have the 8-version of your 6-string robin-egg Lap King 57 Chevy Belair. It's in C6. Plus I have an old Stringmaster Deluxe.) For some reason, I prefer G6 open to C6 open on my Stringmaster Deluxe.. (Maybe I'm doing it wrong,.. Lol.) Thanks Jerry.
The only question I might have missed is what strings does he use? Or a better question and I hope I don't pull a pin and have to plug my ears on the response. What strings should I buy? I have recently started playing Dobro (resonator). I picked up a cheap to me Regal RD-40 and I am just pliking around while trying to find a Dobro teacher in Upstate NY. What happened to me is I have heard and loved the Doboro sound all my life and didn't realize what it was until recently and the bug hit me bad. Even to the point that I am thinking about setting down my main instrument (Trombone) for a while to devote all my time to getting proficient at Dobro. Jerry has open my eyes and ears wide then they have ever been!!
I relicd / 'ruined' an LP junior for this punker joan jett chick I work with, I started putting it back together just b4 this vid and I'm tuning it now including soldering and a bit of final sanding. These guys are just rappin it up. That's a long vid cuz I'm not a wizard
