On the last leg of their tour supporting their latest release, the kind members of Periphery took some time to talk with Premier Guitar about their compact, yet powerful, stage gear. The guitar slingers in the band are very serious about tone and feel, which can get challenging with the drop tunings and precision needed for their songs.
Jake Bowen’s signature model Ibanez is the JBM-100. This black-matte finished 6-string beauty sports a mahogany body, maple top, and Jake’s signature passive DiMarzio Titan pickups. Bowen also brings a 7-string version on the road as well. He wanted a guitar that could handle the “middle ground” of playing rhythm and lead.
Misha “Bulb” Mansoor’s guitars are well designed and very colorful. His No. 1 is a Jackson Custom Shop 7-string with a basswood body, quilted maple top, maple neck, and an ebony fretboard.
His Bare Knuckle Juggernaut pickups drive his aggressive style, and he carries an almost identical 6-string version.
Misha also plays an Aristides 070 constructed of Arium that also features his signature pickups.
Mark Holcomb’s main guitars are made by PRS. His new favorite is a PRS Private Stock model, featuring a 25 1/2" scale length, gorgeous flamed maple top, and DiMarzio pickups of his design.

Goddamn, I am obsessed with click tracks and IEMs. I hate that Jake seems almost embarrassed, like as though he feels the need to justify their use of the Macbook to the internet. During teardown/loadout at the rehearsal space, I've had old-timers coming into the room make fun of me for using a laptop, saying "it's not cool" or "it's not rock and roll" but what are we going to do, get a keyboard player just to hang around and press one or two notes for one or two parts of each song? It's an invaluable tool for ambience and tightness and when not just the drummer, but the entire band has IEMs, it's a total game changer--and you can mystify everyone by starting songs without a count in.
@bryanMangabang

No, the fanned fretboard was NOT designed because "our hands are naturally fan-shaped", it's because of intonation. "provides to each string its natural scale length, to achieve a better intonation on the whole string set."

@WoolleyGG
@WoolleyGG 9 лет назад
I'm pretty sure the fanned fret design is an ergonomic decision, but not for the reason the interviewer said. The pattern of the frets is that way because of the change in scale length across the strings, and the change in scale length is so you can have a more even string tension across all of the strings. Making it feel more consistent when you play.

He seemed to have a lot more of an accent back when he was with Red Seas Fire, for instance, but I wonder if being in America with Periphery all this time now has started to flatten out his accent and make it a little less pronounced?

24:23 I always hear this and I don't agree with the sentiment that fan frets are ergonomic because our hands are fan shaped. That only makes sense if your hand is as wide as the length of a guitar neck. Spread your fingers anywhere around the neck except between maybe the 10th and 14th frets, and there will be no parallels with your fingers to the frets.

No matter how many great guitarists i see that try independent custom built guitars with everything the guitarist asked for, they always go back to the big brands i.e. jackson, ibanez, fender, esp etc. it's quite odd. and FYI Misha 'Netherlandian' people are called Dutch ;)
@JanTomas123
@JanTomas123 9 лет назад
Maybe they go to "the big brands" because the big brands have a lot of money to spend in marketing and the independent ones don't? They're sure very good guitars but they're not doing it for the quality man.

A lot of the guys i talk to go the the "big brand" guys because when ever they cant bring their guitar or amp or what have you with them and have to get a backline, your more obscure and homebrew companies arent going to have stock in rental companies warehouses they can get exactly what they use out of these places. The companies themselves also have international warehouses if stock to send out for the bigger bands to pick up at. and for those oh shit moments you can also generally go to a chain and pick up a close enough if something ever went down night of, likes someone steals your entire trailer while your eating lunch and now you have to find gear. there are so many things at play just from the road side why guys chose these bigger companies.
@JanTomas123
@JanTomas123 9 лет назад
TrashMojo That's not a valid point in this case. If their gear is stolen they're pretty much fucked, not easy to find 4 axe fx (plus the patches), zilla cabs, a dinwall bass... etc
