Not really sure why people are saying he looks awkward or this is painful. I think he seems humble and genuinely OK to talk about what he plays and why. I really enjoyed this video.
@@NickB-md1oy I can’t remember if it was on Amputechre or The Bedlam in Goliath, but Omar wanted to sit back and direct the album and basically taught John all of the guitar parts to play on the whole album! Very cool. I’m such huge fans of both of them. I still need to listen to their collaboration albums. They did two, I think. On another note, it was John’s playing with Omar and TMV that inspired him to play more solos on his last album with the Chili Peppers.
Lol they definitely have egos, Omar especially. I'd say maybe John doesn't have much of an ego and while they both can come off humble, neither are pompous arrogant assholes, but I think Omar has a bigger ego than you think.
@@shikhindahikar8488 "all music written, composed, produced, arranged and "*directed*" by Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez. performed by the Mars Volta group" ... etc. it's no secret Omar (and Cedric too to some extent) ran a pretty pretty dictatorial, domineering ship with The Mars Volta. they've had a history of firing pretty competent players on unfair grounds and being kinda ruthless in that regard, and being kind of sanctimonious sometimes with at the drive-in? and then of course Omar and Cedric both have just often given off an air of superiority and arrogance in interviews and what not..
It’s getting tough to find good info and pictures of his rig from when it was at its most complex. Used to be able to find some info about his rig when he was running two pedal boards on the floor plus one on a stand as well as a Roland RE:201 Space Echo. He and Juan were pretty much the reason that I got so interested in pedals.
People like Omar spend they're time creating sonic adventure instead of hanging out at a mall with friends following current trends. It's genius. People like Omar make the world interesting. Making original inspired music for no other reason than the music itself. Without an agenda. It's so refreshing.
It's possible they know each other. Damon Locks is a close friend of the band who used to be the frontman for a band called Trenchmouth, which Armisen drummed for. Locks is also the cover artist for ATDI's last two albums and the lead singer for The Eternals, who have opened for TMV.
I write complicated post-punk post-hardcore rifts and I'm the same way about simplicity. Basically what he's saying is that he wants to bear bones it. No need to put a bunch of muck in front of your sound. Spoken like a truly great guitar player.
Dudes just jealous he’s such a beast on guitar that he uses bare bones equipment yet makes amazing music. It’s okay buddy. This guy probably practices religiously like Eddie Van Halen did. Him and his brother will be legends to many of us dumb ass millennials haha
I switched to .13-56 gauge strings because of him. Best thing I ever tried. Now I can actually control my playing without notes bending ridiculously out of tune. The strings aren't to hard to bend either, you just have to have a strong grip!
Last time I saw ATDI, he was playing a 30 watt 🍊 head with two 4-12 cabs. He also has his own sig. Ernie Ball guitar that looks sweet. Pedals, I have no idea.
i've come to a conclusion some time ago that the music a musician writes projects their personality. most of the time you can hear how nervous and fast omar speaks, trying to get his point across when he has so much in his head that he wants to express. it reflects in most of his music - manic, angular and very long at times! not saying it shows in all his music of course, but it u get what i mean.
I love Omar and this is cool to hear all his input but what I really like here is that this is an awesome interview. Good job getting him to go in to detail with the specific pedals he likes when at first he steered clear of the topic. Good job guys!
nah, he used the m9 to try to get the sounds from his vintage pedals that he leaves behind in his studio. i doubt he would use it for recording because hes got a huge library at home.
Wow, I'm very surprised to see how compact Omar's pedalboard has become. I remember being almost a point of ridicule when talking about the band but this looks like a really sensible, effective set-up.
yea that arion delay pedal he's talking about is fucking awesome. the one i had a couple of years ago broke quickly, but it was completely different from any other delay. goodshit.
I know he doesn’t have broken english but you do realize in his hometown El Paso, Tx a vast majority of the population is hispanic and alot due have broken english so it’s actually possible. The comment just seems a little generalized
Well he was born in Puerto Rico yeah but he is kinda from Texas, grew up there. But yeah either way he is definitely a fluent Spanish speaker and obviously cmmes from a Spanish speaking background.
I have to disagree with you there, Omar. You are most CERTAINLY a musician and of the very best kind. I believe it's fact. Music is a form of art, and everything they teach people in music theory is how to emulate what music from the soul sounds like. You have accomplished something great, which is playing as closely as possible to what is in your soul. It's honest and it is the most profound and enjoyable sound on earth. the sound of life. God bless you :)
I love how much of a regular guy Omar actually is after seeing his stage antics in ATDI and TMV, and hearing how dark a lot of TMV's music is. Very down-to-Earth person.
I used to have like 5 guitars and 11 pedals but I was inspired by Omar to strip down my setup and it was the smartest decision. I now just use two guitars, two amps and about 4 pedals. I concentrate more on iust the music and performance now.
I never knew he played a Jet King. I’ve got a Jet King 3, it’s been my fav guitar for a few years now. Mines got twin P90’s in it though. And it’s bright yellow 👍🏻
Thank you for finally tuning that racket out at 9:37 in the video. Jeez..also I think some of you are confusing nervousness with broken English. He just seems like a jumpy guy.
Premier Guitar - would love to see an At the Drive-In Rig Run Down with both guitarists if you guys get the chance. Cant get enough of Omar’s playing and info about is his rig.
Kashmir playing in the background throughout most of the interview. :P Omar and I have the same first name... representing for all the Omars worldwide!
i made a guitar for myself 25 years ago, and the strings go into the body exactly like that, on that curve/angle. i did it so that the varying angles would lend the thinner strings more sustain, and the higher notes of a chord would last as long as the lower notes.
Damn! Seeing this video of omar took me back to being 18 again and rocking the deloused album. Anyways I agree with the pedal thing less is more. Digging the orange.
I play .11-58, Earnie Ball Power Slinky and I think those are perfect for me. Not too thin, not as thick as the heavier strings, either. Heavy strings can be more difficult to bend (but not incredibly so), but you have to get used to bending them because it takes more than the lighter gauges.
They might have even approached him years ago but when he had that giant pedal board he would cover up all the pedal names and stuff like that with duct tape because if he told everyone what pedals he uses then all these bands would show up with effects EXACTLY like his instead of trying to create their own unique sound.
BS i was on a Vegan diet for decades and it fucked my body up.. I am now a hunter because i don't trust meat you buy, i like to know where all my foods comes from..
simple not too over the top set up and he sounds awesome. You look at other bands' monstrous over the top rigs (disturbed, nickelback, etc), and it just puts you off. I like to see a set up that i can understand how it works.
Picks can have a pretty big impact on sound when recording. I like it that they're thorough and ask about everything. Besides, it takes like 20 seconds of the 12 min video so big deal?
This video is proof that magical sounds and great music come from the player and his playing, and not from some amp or the pedalboard. as always, amazing
Oh, I'm not saying people with those massive rigs automatically suck, it's just that it's not necessary to have a massive rig just to play a big gig. A garage rig works just fine, as long as you know how to tweak it, and get the sound you want out of it. For example, if I had to play a massive show with my little rig, with a 2X12 combo amp and 3 pedals, I could do it. It wouldn't be the best option, but it would work. I just feel that people often go overboard with gear because they can.
Proof you don't need all this fancy tech and a massive rig and racks of guitars to make music, just because you've made it. You see all these rig rundowns that are obviously big rockstar rigs, but his could easily belong to a guy that just jams in the garage with friends, and plays basement gigs.
That Ibanez wh10 is a GODLY wah. John Frusciante uses it as well. So an awsome freakin pedal. I will never part with mine, even for a couple hundred dollars.
I don't know, man. I maintain that he's about 5'9". I'm exactly 5'9" barefoot, measured by my doctor (physical), not just a guess on my part, and he was at the very least as tall as I was, if not a tad taller, and he was wearing chucks. 5'7" hunched over, maybe. I don't mean this as an offense to you in any way, but I think I'm in a better position to gauge his height when I can clearly see right in front of me, eye to eye, that he's essentially as tall, maybe a little taller, not shorter.
Why, of all times in his career, did they have to review THIS rig? I would have loved to have seen a detailed rundown of the Deloused, Frances, or Bedlam Rigs....
