On my second lesson in-car I stopped first at one of these bad boys, intending (and signalling) to turn left and the car coming my way from the opposite direction was slowing to stop after me so I proceeded and suddenly he sped up and plowed straight through the intersection as I was turning so I pulled myself out of his way and braked (at the same time my instructor did) and it actually took away a lot of my anxiety like ripping a bandage off lol The instructor said I was doing the right thing, and said I handed it really well -- all I could hear in my head though was you saying the right of way is given not taken! (and he did NOT give lol) True. Facts.
I clearly arrived first, so I believe I had the right of way even though I was left turning , correct? (understanding that the right of way went to that guy when he proceeded into the intersection anyway in the end)
I am from Europe and will go on a two week vacation to the US soon. Four way stops are probably the biggest challenge for us Europeans, but this video helped me a lot. Thanks.

Very interesting traffic rule design. Here in Germany four way stop intersections don't exist at all and if I'm not mistaken nowhere else in Europe as well. We have many roundabouts instead which I personally find way safer, first and foremost because drivers have to keep low speeds. At a four way stop it's very easy for someone negligent to just blow through the stop sign and causing a heavy T- bone collision. Accidents inside a roundabout on the contrary are significantly less severe and it's proven by statistics. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to cause a debate between european and US traffic rules. Just saying that I'd find it pretty confusing having to remember who stopped first, especially when many cars are coming from all 4 directions. At a roundabout in Germany you only have to give way to cars already inside the roundabout. What do you think? Couldn't all these 4 way stop intersections simply be replaced by roundabouts?
I wish I was born in Europe instead. North America sucks with its transportation policies. Public transit is usually garbage here, and you may as well forget about it as a viable option unless you are in a relatively select few metropolitan areas. Four-way stops also suck, because honestly most of the time it's just a game of chicken where whoever is the biggest dickhead goes. If you get two dickheads at the same time, boom, you have someone getting cut-off & road-rage ensues, or worse a traffic accident.
I agree on the public transit part. As for the four way stops I can't say much as I've never been in the US so far. However there are also at roundabouts many irresponsible drivers that will cut you off. No traffic regulation system is flawless unfortunately.

Absolutely awesome my friend. Thanks for dropping back and letting us know about your success. Where did you go for you first solo drive? All the very best, Cheers Rick
WHAT!? 36 seconds in... They both show up to the stop sign at the same time the person to the right has the right of way... no? By the pause logic if you both follow it you will both be paused doing the "gas...BRAKE.... gas.... BRAKE" It's always been the first person or the person to the right. Am I crazy?

I was the second car at a four-way stop sign, so I waited for the first car, which was on my left, to go straight. However, while waiting for this car, a third car arrived directly across from me, and was turning right. While I was waiting for the first car to drive straight through the intersection, the third car that arrived made their right hand turn before I could make my left-hand turn. I was the second car to arrive to the intersection, but the third to be able to make my maneuver. Did that second car follow proper traffic rules?
You elaborated this point on two way stops - but I didn't see it repeated here. If you arrive first but you're turning left, do you yield right of way to vehicles who arrive after you at the intersection? (Note: 0:45)
0:40 did you let him go first even tho you guys arrived at the same time due to the fact that your turning left? Because if u we’re turning right he would have to wait on you to turn first
On the first example, you drove up to the intersection at the same time as the other person but you were to the right of him. You had right of way didn't you?
You are correct, but sometimes it's just easier to pause and let the other vehicle go first. Keep in mind: "you can be right, or you can be dead right." All the best, Cheers Rick

This is easily the most difficult aspect of driving to understand, because everyone has a different subjective view on whether they arrived "first" to the intersection or not. It is the cause of great confusion.
That’s laughable nobody where I live know how to do a 4 way stop . I grew up in Colorado back in the 70’s drivers ed was mandatory I’m 65 now never had an accident . I think drivers ed needs to come back so many bad drivers on the road .
3-, 4-, and ALL- Way STOPS are strange indeed my friend. There would be far less confusion if these were just roundabouts. All the very best, Cheers Rick
I hate the 4 way stop near where I live nobody knows how the rules work. What confuses me is when the traffic waiting behind the car that’s already at the stop line goes instead of waiting for their turn to go. Someone almost hit me today in this situation. I was waiting at the stop line to go straight at the 4 way stop and there was a car to the right of me with traffic behind them- all going straight. I waited for that first car to go cuz they had the right of way and stopped before me. Then I started to go, but the car that was behind that car on the right started to go and didn’t even stop and we almost crashed. They flipped me off like I was in the wrong but I thought it had to be whoever reaches the stop line first can go? Yes they were on the right of me but I was already there waiting and they didn’t touch the stop line before I did. This is why I jus let other people go cuz people annoy and scare me😭
i’m still practicing to drive and i always make complete 3 second stops. i’m trying to turn left past him, but then the dude that arrives on the left comes to a rolling stop then goes when i go. then gets mad at me😭. it’s like a 3 second stop is too long or something. i guess i’ll just wait when i arrive at the same time, since i tend to wait longer than most people
I think they should just get rid of 4 way stops and just put in traffic lights. Some of these drivers on the road barely stop or just run through them. As someone who stopped driving for years and just got back into it recently the things I’ve been seeing are just scary
I couldn't agree more my friend! Less crashes, more traffic per hour through the intersection, and less urban noise pollution. All the very best, Cheers Rick
I don't know where this is, but their drivers are just about as negligent about actually STOPPING at a four-way stop as ours are here. It would be nice if more drivers actually complied with the rules... this advice is sort of a loose interpretation. I wouldn't give it to a beginning driver, that's for sure.
