I like how Patrick could never get a good read on him, because we as the audience felt the same way. I was never really sure, sometimes it felt like he could see right through Patrick and sense something was wrong about him, other times it felt like he was just bored and trying to amuse himself because he had grown tired of speaking to the same vapid, greedy, airheaded yuppies over and over again. A small character but left a big impact. Great performance.

I love how ultimately this is a commentary on the yuppie 80s and Wall Street culture. All of the yuppies acted and looked so much alike that everyone kept continually confusing everyone (in this movie) for everyone else. It’s how Patrick could be at that dinner and also kept being called Paul.

The best part about this scene is that they filmed Willem’s part with him reading it in three different ways. One where he knows Patrick did it, one where he suspects and one where he has no idea. Then they cut and spliced pieces of all three of them together. Makes the scene so much better

its also that the directors tried to confuse the audience with this even further, brilliant if you ask me. in every scene with the detective they filmed it 3 times. one where he knew for sure it was patrick, one where he was suspicious of patrick, and one where he had no clue it was him. they then stitched those all together for a mess of unsureness for the audience

God Dafoe has that perfect "I know it's you" smile. You can see in his eyes when he trips up Patrick about the dinner and does the little head thing, that he knows he's sitting across from a madman. The man knows everything. He knows he killed Paul and told Paul he was Marcus, and he knows he actually wasn't at that dinner at Atlantis. But Patrick is just too big of a fish to bag.

Yeah, no. It’s supposed to be ambiguous. Each cut is played differently and uses 3 different performances; one where he knows, he’s suspicious, and doesn’t know it all. Then they’re cut together to keep the audience guessing. It’s hard to say whether he just doesn’t suspect him, or just is turning a blind eye like the apartment lady and (possibly) the lawyer (though, he has less of a reason to do that than the other two characters.)

You know, there’s a certain level of acting I’ll witness that I’m uncertain is even acting. Like Christian Bale looks like he’s legitimately about to pass out and die right there. And Willem Dafoe has this grin and sparkle in his eye like he’s has some real dirt on Christian. I loved the acting from these two in this movie, felt so real.

The movie, like the book, is to be taken more as a metaphor than a story grounded in reality. One of the major themes of the movie is the shallowness and ultimately meaningless of 80's consumerism lifestyle, hence Patrick's quote at the end of the movie, "This confession meant nothing". If you take it like this, it's easy to see why everyone is kinda low-IQ and incompetent.

For the people that may not know, they shot these scenes with Dafoe with 3 different presets: -his character is not at all suspicious of Bateman. -his character is a little suspicious of Bateman. -his character fully knows Bateman is a murderer. They then edited all these together to give an extremely unsettling feel to both Bateman and the audience. You can never get a grasp on what he thinks.

Mary Herron shot this scene with multiple different takes, Willem acting oblivious and assuming Patrick is innocent, Willem acting like he knows Patrick killed Paul, and Willem acting more neutral. The takes were edited together into one scene alternating back and forth to make it harder to get a read on the detective. Pretty brilliant decision.

The scene is wonderful because it was filmed twice. in the first version, the detective was supposed to know Patrick was the killer. In the second version, the detective didn’t imagine Patrick could’ve done it. Then they mixed the two versions, interlaced. That is why it is so puzzling!

Something cool about this movie is that dafoe filmed three takes 1. Where he knew Bateman was the killer 2. Where he suspected it 3. He didn’t think he was the killer. That’s why the scenes with him are so odd they spliced the scenes so you can’t get a read on him because Patrick can’t. As the audience we are in Patrick’s mind so it makes sense that we feel odd whenever dafoe is on screen.

I love how both interpretations of this scene. Either the detective genuinely doesn't suspect Patrick, but he's so inept at reading people he can't even tell the difference between a friendly remark or a threat, or the Detective knows Patrick killed Paul Allen, and just caught him in a lie, meaning Patrick is guilty in the detective's eyes, and suspicious enough in the police station's eyes to warrant further investigation.
