The duo of the Righteous Brothers are made up of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Only Bobby Hatfield sung Unchained Melody (which is a cover, and was sung by many other different performers before these two touched it) and Bill Medley didn't want to record his voice because he didn't think the song would be a hit. Little did he know it would become one of their greatest hits and considered the best rendition of the song ever performed. Ironically Bill Medley refusing to sing the song likely contributed to its success as it allowed Bobby Hatfield to use the full range of his voice without the need to harmonize with Bill's much deeper voice.
I was singing along to this when all of a sudden my dad burst in. I thought he was mad that I was playing my music too loud. Instead he was thrilled. This was the music of his youth, he said. We spent the afternoon mastering the harmony call back. Such an awesome bonding moment.

I love the show. As a 70 year old baby boomer it ligjts up my heart when I see young people hear and appreciate great music. The Sixties will live on forever thanks to the music and people who are willing to experience the real thing. The young womans reaction brought me to tears.
How do you know you made a good song? When 55 years later, it reaches people on the same emotional level that it did when you released it. This is a timeless classic. It has transcended generations and is still one of the most played songs in music history. If you're looking for 2 more great songs, I would try Soul & Inspiration as well as Georgia On My Mind. Unchained Melody was an agreed deal between the two. They would get to record a solo track on their albums. Both of them wanted to sing it, and it came down to a coin toss. Love your energy. Years ago, before they were "discovered" they were booked into a black nightclub in the Watts area in Los Angeles. The owner of the club was really upset when he found out the "Righteous Brothers" were not black. They asked for the opportunity to just try us out first before saying no. When they went onstage, the crowd started booing and throwing things at them. They persisted anyway, and then the miracle happened! The crowd heard them and settled down to listen. At the end of their set, the crowd wouldn't let them leave, and wanted more! It was then that they earned the nickname "Blue-eyed Soul"
This was the "most played song on the radio in the entire 20th Century" according to BMI. It's great to see the young folks discover what I've known since I was a DJ and playing their hits in the 1960's. The Righteous Brothers were sensational, Amen!!

It's HILARIOUS watching the REACTION to performances I watched and loved (and still do of course) over a half century ago!! This was a time in music that was PURE and HONEST loaded with raw TALENT and NO AUTO-TUNE.... The way TRUE music was always meant to be. Your generation is just now waking up to the REAL DEAL... Their vocal performances are so good, it's easy to overlook how good everything else is. The background singers, the percussion section is perfect, the brass section... the arrangement itself is a masterpiece. Not taking anything away from the Righteous Brothers, obviously.

They are called the Righteous Brothers. Sometimes they sing together, sometimes one or the other does a solo. Sometimes they used to flip a coin to decide which would do a solo song. They are both very talented singers and the control they have in their voices is amazing!!
Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield made up the righteous brothers. They each sang a song that highlighted their voice. The blonde Bobby Hatfield passed a few years ago. Bill Medley still performs in Las Vegas! All their performances were live.
In Vegas, it is still a duo. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003 and in 2016 Bill Medley decided to find a new partner, Bucky Heard, and continue tours until today. They are still fantastic shows and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes their music. Bucky Heard couldn’t have been a better substitute for Bobby Hatfield.
I was so fortunate to see them together before Bobby died. I just wish I had the chance to see them when they were young. I was born in 1950, so I was a teenager in the sixties. They were hugely famous through the sixties.
As an old fart who grew up listening to this music, it thrills me that you younger folks are discovering the amazing talent from that era. There was no autotune back then, no electronic correction; just a rudimentary reverb at very best. The recording equipment was not nearly the quality we have now, so what you just heard was pretty much what came out of those guys' mouths. Two amazing voices and boat loads of talent! I'm so happy you were touched by this wonderful music.

This was recorded before a live audience. It was a one time, do or die, fly or crash. There was no do over. What you did right there before the audience lived or died right there. The same with Unchained Melody.
Loved your reaction, that's because they also do solos and it fit their voices some signs to do together some by themselves but there's is a music that stands the test of time I can see it in your eyes when you heard it you are about to cry so I know it grabs you and held you. People just don't sing like that anymore and the world is a sadder place because of it
I’m so lucky to have been young when this beautiful music used to be played...so it’s been a real joy to watch your reaction and emotions as you heard it for the first time....we older people smile when we see how much equipment modern singers seem to have to use to get a record out these days...when watching them then..,they sang live, no miming just sang from the heart. I never assume the race of a singer because I always felt talent does not have a color. So I’m always neutral even when I learn an artist true ethnicity.
I think Bill Medley, the deep baritone one, was heavily influenced by the the great black singers of the 50’s. Bobby Hatfield might say the same thing, but his voice range seemed to make him more of a standalone artist, but he also harmonized so greatly with Medley. Can’t believe that Bill is still performing and recording, albeit without Bobby who died back around 2003. I have been a big fan since 1965 when I was only in 7th grade.

I am an old man and remember these songs the first time around. I believe their style of music was termed' Blue Eyed Soul'. Black people rather like them and some called out: 'you're righteous brothers'. Thus as the legend goes, that is how they got their name by black members of their audience. I was 11 when these guys first hit the charts in 1964 with their Blue-Eyed Soul. They originally had a different name until they did a gig for a bunch of soldiers. When they finished, as the story goes, a couple of black soldiers yelled at the stage over the applause "Man you brothers are Righteous!!! ". The name stuck. They were consummate performers and despite their distinctly divergent vocal ranges produced some of the best harmonies I've ever heard. As someone else pointed out this was back in the day of no digital effects...no autotune. These guys simply had talent on loan from God. Poor Bobby Hatfield (the blonde) also had really severe stage fright..prior to every performance he'd throw up, compose himself and get out to the audience and along with Bill, proceed to effortlessly deliver greatness There's other great songs to react to.. Soul and Inspiration, Ebb Tide, and one real bluesy rocker that gets overlooked on reactions: videos: I Just Want To Make Love To You.
The world will never see anything like the combination of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield again. We were truly blessed to have been a part of beautiful music history that is/was the Righteous Brothers.

Another reviewer nailed it when he called this song "relentless" - instead of repeating the first verse, as we'd expect, it goes into a new tune and new lyrics. Them doing Soul and Inspiration is even better, songs like this just aren’t made anymore. In groups back in the day it was common for someone to step up for a solo as was done for Unchained.

Bobby Hatfield is the one you heard singing Unchained Melody by himself. He is the tenor. He passed away in 2003. Unchained Melody is in Ghost. Bill Medley is the taller baritone. You've Lost That Loving Feeling is in Top Gun and their song The Time Of My Life is in Dirty Dancing. Two amazing voices, who were influenced by Motown.

This is the music we loved and listened to in the 1960's. We had so many great singers in that era and so many dances in High School. It was a wonderful time to be a teenager.

This was one of my favorite songs as a kid....That and anything sang by Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Petula Clark.....sigh. What a time that was. AND it is sad when it ends so you play it over and over and over....wanting to get that loving feeling.

Bill is 6’8-9” and Bobby was 6’4-5. My ex met Bill in Vegas in the late 60s. He stood to shake her hand and she swore she was looking at his belt buckle. She was 5’. I met him in Vegas in the late 90s and told him the story. He got a good laugh at it. A real nice guy and great voice.
Darlin remember this was 1964. Live. I remember watching this on live TV back then. After all these years I still enjoy listening to them. For eleven and a half years until my late wife passed away I sang there songs every day.
