Hey guys, I am trying to win a tarpon tournament here in South Texas this time next year (has not been won in 3 years). Problem is I have to fish off the shore (no jettys, piers, boats, etc). The surf is always a huge pain, this year a kayak wouldn't work at all (only can be used to cast the bait....planning on using a surfboard next year). So looking for tips on surf-fishing for tarpon. The current is always terrible and terrible clarity. Almost forced to use what I call a "spider weight" and a heavy one too like a 6-10oz. Maybe a big live mullet? Seems like they hunt by sight more than scent, right? Don't know where I would get a live crab easily....
Cut the biggest mullet you can find in half and use the head on the bottom with whatever type of weight you need to keep it still on the sand.. where I fish I don’t use any weight the head sinks enough, you will need lead in the surf.. put out 2-3 or as many baits as you can use 7/0 light wire circle and leave your drag set normal not loose, the fish will set itself just wait on the bite don’t touch the rods
Tarpon are scavengers more than anything their mouth is designed to scoop stuff off the bottom, although they have phenomenal vision even in the pitch black to eat a live mullet.. you’ll have best luck on dead
