At first I was like "Jeez, how many mods this guy has installed that the game looks so different..." And then I saw the date and realized that this is probably one of the first ever versions of the game, crazy!
I actually owned this game since way before it was on steam. I actually bought it off their website when they first started selling it. There were many versions of the game before this. At one point the pawns looked exactly like the prisoners in prison architect.
Dig your base in a mountain. Get a mortar zone going, make lots of traps, use and abuse grenades (they existed in alpha), I think you had access to the remote explosives, which got removed because too op. Anyway, SHOULDA WORKED BETTER ON THOSE DEFENSES
I made this video a long time ago. I can't believe how many people have watched it and commented. Your perspectives on it are amazing. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to do so!
as someone with just a few hours short of 1000 on the rim, it is interesting to see such an old colony and how much has changed..the raiders are throwing rocks.....and the Steel walls are on fire, so glad that mechanic was removed (although im so used to not using them because of that its no longer an issue even with the rework to them) anyway, much appreciated :)
I love rimworld because of the characters you get attached to and the stories they generate My colony was lost because of bad planning, only a few of my colonists where armed, and my guns are on the other side of my colony than the melee weapons, so when a horde of tribesman came, they took me completly by suprise and attacked the part of the colony where the guns where, so all my colonist who where running towards the guns where forced to retreat, John one of my original colonists led the few gunwielding colonists to provide cover for my unarmed colonists, and gave them enough time to get to the melee weapons, alas John and his millitia where to outnumbered and where outflanked and butchered. The remaining colonists began arming themselves with bows, swords and spears, and geared up with watever armour they could fight, and began lining up between to housed with the stockpile building behind them The first wave of tribesman was small only 6 man strong, no match for my 14 man army, and they where disposed of without any casulties to my forces. But i was to focused on this small assault, and didnt notice the 27 remaining tibesman until it was to late, they had split themselves up into two gruops, the bigger one came right at me, and the smaller one outflanked me and hit me from behind, 11 colonists where incapacitated or killed James (original 3) was one of them. Only Kate (original 3) Ane and Sam survived by hiding in a house and smashing through the wall escaping into the wilderness, luckily the tribesmen where to busy burning the town to the ground and blowing up my turrets that only 5 of them chaced after them, and when trying to walk through a narrow pass they where greeted by a hail of arrows, and only inflicted a minor wound on Kate. I then saw the rest of the tribe where begining to move toward the survivers, and made the terrible mistake of hiding them in a mine , and began mining some iron and make sandbags, alas they where simply to many, and while the survivers managed to disable 5 of the barbarians they got killed of one by one, first Ande then Sam. Thus on eof the first colonists became the very last when she was tragically clubed to death, by a 54 year old canibalistic farmer. what a tragic end :(
+marvin van zon Thanks for the story. Haven't played in a while. Maybe I'll do a lets play eventually. I always get really into the stories that the game generates. In this particular instance, Darkeye was my only survivor. He had no other skills other than combat. We saved him from a crashed pod i believe. He used to be a former assassin. From his skill set i assume that is all he knew. Finally he found somewhere to escape it all. For the first time in his life he had a family. And he used his skills to the best of his ability. To protect the only people who had ever accepted him. (Oddly enough his AI caused him to make frequent trips outside to stand behind the base alone. I always figured he was contemplating his new life and needed his space.) Sadly, in the end it was not enough. A large number of angry tribesmen attacked on that fateful day. The colonists fought the best they could but were forced to retreat into the base. The defenses which had always provided safety in the past were quickly overwhelmed. Darkeye was carried to safety and all others were slain. And so he was left alone. Again. Life had gone full circle. I don't know what happened to him after. Maybe he found a new home. Maybe he died.
Best end I had was caused by toxic fallout and starvation. Had to move most people into cryogenic pods that I found in a ruin to use less food. Then of course raiders attacked leaving one guy left who later died from infection.
Pro tips: Always transform your killbox into a giant oven by roofing it and placing firecamp inside, when overwhelm, light every firecamp and close all doors. Watching them trying to escape helplessly is beyond satisfying and you can easily slave those who survived and laying on the ground affected by heatstroke.
I Urban Dictionaried it... Reverse Dutch oven When you love the smell a girls farts so much that you trap her under the blankets until she lets one rip so you can inhale it straight from her boot-ay.
First ever colony was on day 693, all 16 members taken out by a roaming pack of 35 man-eating huskies. Ill never forget those characters and their stories.
Just look at how far we've come. This was from 2014, 7 years ago. We have multiplayer. We have Z-levels, we have a 3D mod in the works. We have ideology, royalty, and all the countless updates, along with thousands of mods. We turned this very basic tower defense game with some survival elements into a true story generator, one that everyone sinks hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands into. I really love this game.
I love rimworld too, but maaan We have multiplayer. --- We dont, thats a barely functioning mod We have Z-levels --- We dont, that mod crashes a lot and its hardly playable we have a 3D mod in the works ---- yep, but not in any working form rimworld is awesome, but it would be lovely if the devs would just work on the huge things themselves like multiplayer and z-levels modders working on it are also awesome ofc but the devs noticing the communitys actually requests would be even better royalty and ideology are good expansions, but its more of a small patch on a flesh wound, it helps, but other things would be much more needed :/
I mean the game didn't came far. The Mod-Community pushed this game real hard. It's s sad, how the devs literally have nothing to do, because the Workshop is making them the cash
@@onyxaustria A DLC for Z levels that are properly integrated (e.g insect infestation areas are based on the insects exploring z levels and coming up on a tile in your base or on the map, instead of it being just random, and maybe having antigrain warheads do z level damage etc) would be so baller, I'd buy it even if it was the price of a full release AAA title.
@@onyxaustria We have not one but TWO multiplayer mods, and both work pretty well(i've played with EIGHT people), one where each one has their own colony and one where everyone shares the same
Good thing this never happen to me, the only event that nearly wiped my colony is when i do trading quest half my colony and pack animals was gone to trade to neighboring settlement it was 3 and half day away not far leaving only 3 armed colonists to guard the colony the rest 4 was builder and artisan and some pacifist that can't wield gun, that's where the raid came, desperately try to recall the caravan back it was 1 day away, they tried their best even pacifist make them run across the base to just distract the pirate, the raid came at night so they use wake up 3 armed guard splitting up and i try to wear them out by running around my base kiting them it was the longest night ever it is 20 vs 7 and only 3 able fighter the pacifist bravery risking his life to act as decoy drawing lead fire to his way, he manage to split the raider group and break the horde to smaller detachment of scattered group, the pacifist badly wounded manage to delay the assault on the base for about 3 hours before he gave in to bloodloss downing him, the raider burned my field and still not try try assault the entrance, they are distracted and while my 3 armed guard chipping away smaller group my builder manage to seal and reinforce entrance with some granite walls, trying to save the pacifist the artisan dismantle wooden section and try to run for it, she manage to grab the pacifist before she herself being hurt in the hand, she manage to get to safety by entering hole that she dismantle and raider was on her tail while she manage to get inside the raider found easy access through wooden hole getting inside rec room and start demolish things, they breaking through next room and start beating the granite wall to get further inside, after the pacifist to delay the bleeding she is replaced by doc before and self tend to her wound she grab incendiary grenade and proceed to kitchen and start dismantling another wood wall to get outside in desperate attempt to throw incendiary grenade to now infested raider area inside the base, she run straight to hole and manage to throw inside the room trapping 4 heavily armed raider inside that soon would be perished of fire, the 3 guard starting to wear down its been 9 hour without food outside they are wounded and crippled proceed to opening on the kitchen the artisan being shoot in hand tearing another bloody wound in desperation to reach the opening on the kitchen, the remaining raider converge to do one final assault on the opening of the kitchen 10 strong man, in that chaotic times the builder replacing the woooden door in the freezer with sandstone, it is the fastest non flammable material he could think of, the temperature inside is alarmingly high under so much pressure the doctor reach catatonic shock before he manage to transfer last remaining bed to the freezer, the artisan in last desperate attempt trying to torch entire wooden section of the base with incendiary before grabbing doc and hauling him to makeshift freezer hospital locking the door shut, this is the final room that still left intact, another part of the base is burning brightly with temperature above 250 c, the cooler struggling to keep up and now freezer is 50c high surviving pawn starting to get heatstroke, not just that it appear that doc tending to pacifist has developed infection, with no medical supply the best remaining colonists can't do much, everything burned and few remaining raider still want more and colonists inside all now downed due heat stroke, but randy is being randy make it rain so the fire swiftly being put out now only granite wall stand between downed colonists and few remaining raider outside, they spend no time and start pounding the wall in attempt to breach it, 7 helpless downed colonists and they starting to capture them, as I watch they pillage whatever they can, however one thing the wounded raider that capturing one of the guard passed out due to bleeding the guard is free and already recover enough to stand on his feet he take downed raider riffle and start gunning the hauler killing few before raider headshot him, Brian the guard fall in the line of duty however Brian heroic sacrifice trigger a miracle another two guard was freed and Tommy and Jimmy despite losing their friend take up arms and start fighting back, Tommy gunning down raider with their own rifle despite being wounded and bleeding in torso while Jimmy despite 55% pain go up and personal with shotgun chasing Henry the builder captive freeing him and giving Henry enough time to grab raider pistol and work together to free another downed colonists, while they are busy hauling the loot and captives, Mary The Artisan, Gilbert the Doctor and John the Pacifist, after couple downed raider the rest flee in panic, the battle is won, not long after the caravan arrive with extra manpower and proper medical supply they started tending the wounded and rebuild, the sacrifice of Brian will never be forgotten, Brian was one of starting colonist who is dear to many his loss leave scar that can be felt across entire colony, however when all seems bleak for Brian Fiance Mary and despite huge mood loss and mental breakdown there is little happiness and consolation can be found there is little Brian inside of her and thanks to mod children and school Little Brian aka "Freckless" will grow up strong and trained by the best teacher colony can give as one of the firstborn colony child that in the future will lead colony into space.
The perfect build is to place 1x granite wall block then 1x sandbag, and build a fence like that. Max 10 block long fence before the main wall (not necessary) and at the edges of the fence you put down traps. A granite trap does 40 damage? Often insta-kill. Before the whole fence, you need another line of sandbag, or mud so the enemies won't try to climb through the fence. When building defenses there are the tribesman melee rushers, the western shooters, and the modern army style. The tribesmans greatbow can cut your hands down, thats why you shot behind from a wall, while at the edges there are traps for the melee rushers. However the fence is only 1 block away from the wall, so any attackers will be in a single line. (autoshotgun) The westerners are mostly bad shooters whom do not do much melee, and are blocked by the sandbags. This is where a melee rush is prefered, but I never do one. They don't do heavy damage like great bows, but they are more accurate. (bolt rifle) The biggest problem is a modern army. They only attack when your base have a big score. Many electricity, weapons, modern armor etz. My base have a huge fence lines, electronics, a mortar, advanced helmets and vest, mostly with bionics production. This is where you get a 6 man modern attack. They have grenades which are dangerous up close and hard to heal. They have igniters and rocket launchers. An igniter can scare away 3 colonist and burn your base (granite walls will stop the fire). While they have accurate burst shot weaponry. While a revolver mostly does little damage, a shot in the neck from a burst rifle can do a big problem. The worst is the mecha attack, but I rarely get any. I just emp, trap, and keep pulling them.
if you have dropship mod, load your dropships with emergency supply in case you lose the colony, if it happens, then order all your colonists to get in and leave by dropship.
Actually it is possible to build and abandon a colony in the latests updates. So yeah, you can go and prepare a contingency colony in case the main one is lost.
Once a trade caravan came to my base and gathered in my killbox for some reason. Then I got raided and the caravan helped me with defending my base. However, some group of tribals, who were my allies, but were in war with the traders at the same time, came to my base to help me with the raiders. However, because of the traders, all pirates were already dead when the tribals arrived. Since they were at war with said traders, who were gathered in large open space of killbox, they began fighting with them. The traders had better weapons and bigger numbers, but tribal were using my sandbags as their cover. Soon, my base was full of corpses of both sides, while all my colonists retreated to safety. Plus, as animals from the caravan got caught in the crossfire, many of them were lying around dead or dying as well. The tribals then began retreating, but many of them were badly injured and most of them died somewhere on the map. Since both of those groups were my allies, I had to tend to the injured, but there were so many of them I had to occupy literally every medical bed. In the end, it really helped me to build up better relations, but I was also finding dead bodies all around the map even several days after that. It was a complete chaos
It would be nice if you could mediate relations between your allies and make some form of federation/alliance with all of them together instead of this happening..it would solve the issue and also give a new aspect to the "social" mechanic.
I kinda feel sad for those people who played the early version, but never got to see what we have now, in 2021 we have countless mods in the workshop that we can use to improve the game experience and performance.
Am I the only one here who thinks guns in rimworld are extremely underpowered. I mean I had to gun down a cow with 3 bursts from an Assault rifle point blank to kill it!
The guns are not underpowered. You can burst a cow with 3 burst which is like 15 bullets or so in total. The cow won't die when you don't hit the heart or brain. You wouldn't die instantly either if someone hits you 3 to 4 times in the stomach. You would bleed to death, like the people in rimworld do. The only thing I think is a bit redicoulus is that you can treat gunshot wounds to the heart or stomach with a medkit. It should need operation
Narrow your combat width. Get your pawns out of the rain with a roof. Make sure there are lights and statues to prevent mood loss. Traps....lots of traps.
Tribal people are terrible. They come in unnaturally large groups and force defenses like zerg. Recently, I had a situation where I was struggling with a mechanoid cluster. Even a heavily armed guest in the so-called war cascket was killed instantly. But a bunch of hostile tribes rushed in and they took and defeated the turrets without much loss ...
This is why one simple does not play rimword without CE. A naked guy taking full mag of an assault rifle and walking like nothing happened its painful to watch.
If I were you, I'd hide in the larger buildings, then take them out one by one when they are scattered Upd: also, them bleeding out was a great advantage for you
yours ended cooler than mine i was able to fend off a raid only for my last colonist to catch malaria and die because of bad immunity and no doctoring skills
At the time I didn't know they could go through walls, I had it all set up, their leader came to the raid. They went around and got inside past all our defenses. They slaughtered everyone and I lost the game
This is why I hate and love Rimworld. You can get caught off guard and lose everything. Or just barely make it and have to start from scratch. You get raided and lose a colony, then the next colony you prepare in case of a massive raid, only to get taken out by a thunderstorm which started a fire. The game is addicting.
Lost my first base to a fire set by raiders. Killbox was made of wood and filled with cotton plants, basically a perfect tinderbox. Storage shed was also made of wood and too close to the killbox, so that went up next. Sent my guys inside to fight the fire, but had to retreat as the air had become super-heated and they would've cooked. Since my buildings were all made of wood and too close together I could only watch in horror as they went down one after another like flaming dominoes. Best I could do was to pull all the food out of the kitchen so my colonists wouldn't starve to death in the middle of winter. In the end, only two buildings survived and all but one of my colonists died from infected wounds. The man in black showed up to help, but by then I was so far behind I opted to just start a new colony and build a far less flammable base. Good times!
Those were some tough tribes people! I mean, you had 3 machine guns and 4 miniguns making a last stand! And they overpowered you with bows and arrows?! Also, those look like metal walls around your base. How did they manage to set them on fire?! I was sure you could push them back if you kept behind your barricade but no, they just went through your pawns like they weren't even there. The game sure has changed a lot, during the years.
Your defense there was very, very bad. You had not enough distance to use your weapons efectively, and with such an small entrance you should have used some explosives against them. Not to mention that forming a U shape behind the second door would have avoided the tribesmen from surrounding your colonists.
Ah, yes. When you have been overrun and completely surrounded by enemies with ranged weapons is the perfect time to stand your ground and fight to the death.
Stupid design anyways to have the turrets just out in the open like that. What better way to insure your colonist will shoot it? The least you can do is give it some sand bags.
@@TheEnder87 lmao I was so on the fence myself. I wanted to get back into it but last time I lost so hard I went salty for years ended up going back tho, but sort of cheesing it with a killbox this time
