Testing ring circuits is easy and many electricians are more than proficient at testing them. For some though, the difficulty comes with understanding where the numbers come from. Why the test results are what they are, how do we detect a spur, can the test results really tell us which socket is a spur, and why?
We will use the most basic ring circuit in these examples and keep things nice and simple as we look at each of the tests and perform some very easy step by step calculations that will help you to more fully understand what happens in a ring circuit when testing as this simulates what happens when the power is put on and when there is a fault.
To view all of our videos type in LearnElectrics all one word into the RU-vid search bar.
This is video No.165 on our RU-vid channel where we have videos on a wide range of electrical topics.

Another great and well explained video, thank you . Have you done any videos that explain what explains what actually causes different than expected results, ie loose connections etc ?? Cheers

Yes and no, Gary. some videos mention problems but I've not made a video just on problems. Its on the list, thanks. Dave.

Question regs say only one spur off the ring. If you have a junction box wago box etc. Ring in ring out then one 2.5 spur out the junction box to a single socket then another 2.5 out the junction box to single socket. Is this allowed technically not a spur off a spur. And can't see how the cable would be overloaded. But is it allowed thanks

@learnelectrics4402 Год назад
If you break into the ring and extend it so that it is still a ring but longer - that is ok. You can put more than one socket on that, at 2.5, because it will always be a ring. As you say, its not a spur and no the cable will not be overloaded if the now extended ring is still protected by a 32A breaker or less. Good question. Dave

I've put your request on the list, but if you follow the 18th edition videos you will find they cover a good bit of the OSG.

Hi there. Just wanted to ask a question. I have had a few questions come up on my 2391 online exam about finding out say r2 on a circuit but really struggle with the calculations. I'm sorry if the question is a bit vage but can't remember the full question. Thank you

Wayne, r2 is the end to end of the earth/cpc as shown in the video. If you mean big R2, then it doesn't exist on its own as its a measurement of the ring and needs R1 to go with it. You can have r1, and you can have r2, and R1+R2 but not just R2 on its own. have another look at the video and follow the calculations. Hope this helps. Dave.

Thank you for the video. In the parallel resistance calculation for R1 + R2 ,Why is r1 1.06 instead of 0.8 and r2 1.06 instead of 1.32 ? Please could you explain this to me as its really bothering me.Thank you again.
@learnelectrics4402
@learnelectrics4402 Год назад
These are simple resistance readings so the 80% rule doesn't apply at this stage. !,06 ohms is the resistance of the ring as a parallel circuit, plus the spur line resistance and the spur cpc resistance, both in series with the ring. You will always get seemingly odd numbers when you start calculating parallel circuits. Stick with it, re-watch the video and keep learning. Thanks for watching. Dave.

@@learnelectrics4402 Thank you Dave, I have just started learning the A B C of Electrics.Its what I always wanted to learn.I must be misunderstanding the parallel circuit.I will research further.Very Grateful for your response.
