Fun fact: The original author of the book considers the Dead by Daylight crossover canon and even wrote part of the lore of how Sadako and Yoichi got dragged into the Entity's realm. This good relationship with both parties has allowed for more skins and lore for both characters while the are in the realm.

In japanese folklore, there's actually a name for what kind of ghost that Sadako is. She's a onryo, a vengeful ghost. The stories involving onryo usually have them return from beyond the grave to take revenge on someone who wronged them in life, usually it's a man. In kabuki theatre, a Onryo's costume consists of a long black wig, a white burial kimono and make up consisting of white foundation combined with face painting.
@redwitch95
@redwitch95 5 месяцев назад
Yep, and her title in DBD is literally The Onryo. Ironically, Sadako isn't the only onryo in DBD either - Rin Yamaoka (The Spirit) is another one, and she's the descendant of a third Japanese spirit/killer, Kazan Yamaoka (The Oni).
@SoldierDelta
@SoldierDelta 5 месяцев назад
@@redwitch95 Worth mentioning that a large portion of DbD's killers are at least inspired by other major horror killers or villains. The Trapper is likely based on Jason, Hillbilly on Leatherface, Nurse likely on the ones from Silent Hill, Huntress on Baba Yaga folklore, Legion on Ghostface, Wraith on the Invisible Man, Oni on Onibaba and, naturally, The Spirit on Sadako. While there's a lot of individual spins and unique killer ideas here and there (such as Artist, Dredge and Plague), it's fairly clear a lot of them are based on famous horror "ideas", even before licensed killers came to be with Michael Myers (The Shape).

This story has a special place in my heart. The Ring (2002) was my first ever horror movie I watched alone, and I was just 5 years old. While my mother was at work one night the relative watching me wasn't actually paying attention so when I asked to watch the movie with the little girl with black hair on the front they didn't look and just said "Sure, but not on this tv I'm using it" Little me ran back to my moms room cause it had a dvd player and a tv. I watched up until the last 20 minutes when my mom came home from work and caught me. She turned it off and I told her that if I didn't finish the movie I'd have nightmares and never sleep. So my mother defeated by my 5 year old tantrum put it back on and she watched the rest with me. Little did she realize this would awaken a passion in me 😂 So I'm glad it's getting covered in the kill count finally, especially the original.
@bearnaff9387
@bearnaff9387 5 месяцев назад
It's also special to me, but I was already an adult. I actually found a copy of the "cursed tape" from the Ring. They were handed out at various places, along with a flyer referencing a cut section of plotline that would have moved the story in a different direction than the Japanese original. The flyer was freaky - if you've ever read seriously schizophrenic ranting by someone in throes of psychosis, you'ld recognize it. So, I watched the tape and wondered what I had gotten myself into. Fortunately, there was a trail of fake website breadcrumbs like a very low-key ARG to follow, and it ended up with me on the world's biggest fansite for Ringu. I uploaded a transcript of the video for folks, wrote the first piece of the Ring fanfic, and found out that the webmaster lived twenty or so minutes away. Within six days of watching the tape, I had someone in my apartment watching it and making a copy. I then hung out with folks in the forums, got invited to a secret screening of the movie a week early where I discovered that everyone else who was there were people I already knew (and bonus, it was an actual "lost" cut of the film with the tiniest and least important differences between it and the theater release.). Oh yeah, I also showed that tape to everyone. EVERYONE. If it were real I would have been responsible for countless deaths, including that of an entire goth club on Halloween. Turns out that I absolutely cannot be trusted with weapons of mass destruction even a tiny bit.

I always found it interesting that the japanese version never tells the characters about the 7 days on the phone, it was briefly mentioned as part of the urban legend but turned out to be false when it comes to the actual curse. Hinting that Sadako most likely tailored her curse after the urban legend. The American version then just straight up made it a part of the curse lol

I love the twist, honestly. There's something so chilling about the idea that you've done all this work to try and lift a terrible curse, only for it to turn out that the one responsible for it is just truly evil, and the only way to escape it is to spread that evil.
@BlueHero45
@BlueHero45 5 месяцев назад
It's also interesting the evolution of the curse is not really touched on in later movies enough. It started as simple weird channel that appeared in the cabin area, and then the kids decided to tape it. It is only than does the curse needs to be copied via VHS. Spiral goes into even more evolutions as Sadako rebirths herself and the spreading curse no longer immediately kills but leaves a biological bomb so to speak in people. A bomb the reborn Sadako can detonate at will. The curse can also be spread at that point via writing left by the protagonist from the first movie. It's all about growing, evolving, and breeding like a virus. Virus is a big theme in fact. By the end of Spiral Sadako has won.

@@BlueHero45 ...and then it turns out that the whole thing takes place in the Matrix - and Takayama Riyuji's psychic abilities allow him to kinda hack his way out of the Matrix and into the real world's telephone system. I am still not sure why people then decided to try and "copy" Riyuji out of the simulation after that stunt. The real world doesn't seem to have psychic abilities. I don't know if I'll ever read Loop, but even a synopsis is trippy.
@bearnaff9387
@bearnaff9387 5 месяцев назад
Considering a big part of Sadako's story is her splitting into two separate beings after killing the reporter, then merging again at the end of her life, there's some question if the Sadacorpse in the well isn't just the remains of the "good Sadako". Like, she would have been happy to lift the curse, but she wasn't the one who made it.
@NatsumiMichi

Can't recommend the book series enough, Suzuki Kōji throws plot twist after plot twist at you with every installment. It's actually quite a complex and thrilling story that goes beyond the 'horror gimmick' of watching the tape, getting the call and then having Sadako crawl out of the TV - which is what Hollywood butchered it into and while the Japanese adaptation is much more faithful to the series, it also never manages to delve into the mystery subplots and the mind-blowing twists and turns of Loop quite enough, which is a shame. I've personally never enjoyed reading horror until a friend got me a copy of Dark Waters - after which I read most of Suzuki's other works and definitely understand why the man is often referred to as 'master of Japanese horror'. It's not the kind of cheap horror most movies throw at you (because hey, can't do jump-scares in a book, lol) - it's the kind of deeply disturbing read that has you on the edge of your seat, uncomfortable but thoroughly hooked. Something akin to King's works.

I really liked that era. I grew up during the 90s and saw horror as slashers because of the horror revival with Scream but also 70s and 80s horror like Halloween, Friday the 13th and Elm Street that were running on TV. So when I discovered Japanese horror, it was a really fresh take on the genre for me and actually terrified me so much I had trouble sleeping sometimes. It didn't really focus on the kills themselves but the psychological aspects of horror with the build-up and suspense with the kills usually being quick and "realistic" in the sense that there weren't fountains of blood or blood at all in many cases. You can also see the impact it had on western horror. While still emphasizing the kills, much more thought was added to actually trying to scare the viewers rather than just horrify them with gore. Though granted there was also the torture porn era as well smack dab in the middle. Imo, it's very much thanks to Japanese horror that the horror genre was saved from going stale again after Scream and its contemporaries started losing steam. They also made horror available for a wider audience by being less about blood and guts and more about the psychological aspects of horror.

10:39 Yoichi in Ring 2 (1999) is also referred to as a monster due to him becoming more like Sadako, an empty husk of who he formerly was. Ring 0: Birthday (2000) has the revelation of Sadako’s past in full & Sadako (2019) being a continuation of the main timeline as it was also directed by Hideo Nakata.

For those who haven't seen the Japanese films,prepare yourself. They are very different even from a lore background,and a lot more horrifying imo. Even the backstory of the girl,who is named Sadako Yamamura,is entirely different. But I'm sure he'll explain this in the video The films get very,very wild,and Sadako is such a dangerous force compared to Samara. She doesn't have to follow the rules she made, only does it out of curtesy. There has been times where if someone tries to stop the victim from being taken, they'll be killed off by her immediately,and if they try to commit suicide,she will show up and end them there. She also can just say "eff you" and just possess people and force them to watch it,or even in some films just describing what it is in the tape is enough to be cursed. There's truly no eacape,and Sadako will take any means to achieve her vengeance. And she isn't limited to a certain area like Kayako or Hanako. She can go anywhere and be anywhere at once,and even in multiple places at the same time. She's definitely one of if not the most powerful Onryo
@Quirksvil
@Quirksvil 5 месяцев назад
And then when outside of the movies themselves, Sadako just becomes absolutely adorable, like in the official mangas, promotional materials, and official social media/youtube channel, they just take this unstoppable onryo and just make her a goof, which is hilariously adorable. If it exists, Japan will make it cute.

Audition might get HEAVILY censored because of RU-vid being a bunch of prudish pricks towards gore, and Audition is gory AF That one will probably have 2 versions of the KC: 1 censored for YT and 1 uncensored for Patreon

I've been looking forward to this for a long time. It's wonderful to see Ring get covered. Wonderful work as always! Sadako and her parents are partially based on real people - Tomokichi Fukurai was a psychologist at Tokyo University, who wanted to study and prove psychic powers. He hired Chizuko Mifune, a famed psychic to perform tests, but she was branded a fraud, leading to her suicide via poison. Fukurai did the same thing again with another psychic named Ikuko Nagao, who was also penalised and died of a fever. The third subject, Sadako Takahashi, was more successful, but by then, interest in Fukurai's studies had dried up.

Wonder if this was also the basis for Ace Attorney's Fey family history. The police use a spirit medium, Misty Fey, to solve a murder. She gives incorrect info due to the spirit not knowing who killed him, and is labelled a fraud. She goes missing for around 17 years, only to turn up in the last episode of the third game.

Great video, Dead Meat Team! Loved to see people talking about this movie again. I gave it a rewatch last year and was really struck by how this movie felt less like a horror and more a supernatural drama, more like a tragedy at times. Really, nothing about this movie is scary except Sadako's incredible scene, the whole movie before that point has a somber and sad tone. It's such a good watch, one of my favorite movies of all time.
