@@KnottingKnots I decided on the eye splice in the end. Had to watch a few times as when I paused the video for the third strand to go in it went dark, that maybe my lack of tech skills with settings. 🤣I had a synthetic rope and so did the 5 tucks. Two more splices to do today and then the test will be if the swing bench will take my weight! I'll have a go at the ring splice with my offf cuts of rope. Many thanks

When I made my bell ropes I always included a stainless steel thimble in the eye, then that was secured to the bell with a shackle. I started a long time ago to "over explain" as I have one subscriber who is blind. He and his granddaughter follow the videos, he listens and she watches. He ties the knot and if he goes wrong his granddaughter corrects him. A lovely little bond must be growing between them?

Yes, you are quite right! This is also often done when doing decorative ropework. A nice taper on a splice looks good when spiral hitching is placed over the top.

Pass two strands up through the link, and one strand down. Then back-splice without the crown knot.

Some people do, but................ from what I have seen, if your anchor has some chain, there is a method of weaving the strands through some of the links of the chain.

I would say yes, but I do remember a long time ago seeing something where the strands are woven through a few links of chain before being brought back up to form a splice. If I come across it again, I will let you know..................

In general the rule is that a slippery synthetic rope need a minimum of five tucks, whereas natural cordage would require a minimum of three tucks. I think also you would have to consider what you are using this for?

I get the impression that you will not be making these for yourself?? If that is the case I can see why you are cautious ;-) In general what I would do is just make one up, then swing off it. If it holds a fat boy like me, then it should be fine. I found this in Ashley's 2858. The Link or Chain Splice has long been used in securing hemp tails to chain running rigging. Reeve two strands through a chain link or a ring, and lay one of these strands back into the rope, it the same time laying out the strand that did not pass through the chain. Join the ends as in a Long Splice. The remaining strand is backed and tapered as described in Splice #2747. I will try to find out for you. There is another way of splicing onto a ring that is in a book by Barbara Merry (future video). I will see if it says why there???

Found this in Ashley's: 2859. William A. Larson’s Ring Splice, made on a ring clew in yacht sails. It is stuck as illustrated, then each strand in turn is tapered and back spliced seven or eight tucks. The last two or three yarns are stuck and backed through the strand, instead of under it.

A ring could be useful when you repeatedly attach the rope to different chains, hooks, shackles, clamps and the like, it would prevent a lot of wear on the rope which could happen with just an eye splice. It also would be a great way to attach clips as with leashes and leads ropes. I wish I had thought of this back when I worked with horses.
