The first-generation Ring Video Doorbell is now half the price of the second generation. So, what's the difference? Ring Video Doorbell: amzn.to/2JL29M8 Ring Video Doorbell 2: amzn.to/2HxWRmz
Thanks for posting this video! I have been searching and searching to find why none of the many instructional videos apply to my ring door bell. You explained the difference between 1st gen and 2nd Gen models. You think all around the problem seeing the big picture. Excellent problem solving skills!👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Excellent video getting straight to the point which is exactly what I was looking for. I currently got first generation bell installed in my front door. And I managed to get second generation, and I’m thinking of moving the first gen to the back of my house. The main reason for that is back of my house is facing busy main road, and second gen is a lot more expensive so I don’t fancy losing big money. 😂
Thanks -good video. Wish you had shown the views with people at the door, for these comparisons, so we could compare face / image quality, which is what really counts (ie: can you see a clear view of the persons face)
Problems my parents never had: 1. Losing their telephones and 2. Having to recharge and/or replace their doorbell batteries. We have to put out a sign out front asking people to knock so they won't stand there trying to ring the doorbell. Some modern conveniences aren't worth the trouble.
Totally agree! I had the original wired version, once they started bringing out the other version, they purposely started to make the first one to not work. How do you have a wired device that is losing battery power ??? Prior to any other generation, it worked perfectly💯‼️ These people are con artists⚠️
I was about to make that comment too. The video resolution makes virtually no difference. From the images it looks to me as if the newer model has a better light meter, that's all.
There's no way I'm going to carry my mobile phone around with me in the house all the time so it seems to me that advertising something as a DOORBELL when it doesn't have any audible indication that someone has pressed the button is false advertising.
You are truly an idiot... you wire the ring to your original bell located inside the house. It only replaces the doorbell button outside. You can also purchase a wifi digital bell of for some reason you don't have an interior bell...
I just bought the 1st gen Ring Doorbell, and yes, you can view the live feed whenever. It starts recording when it detects motion. It even has 24/7 photo capture that gives you a timeline snapshot of the whole day. I wanna say every Ring product has these features but I have no idea since I only have that one.
I have had the 1st generation and it was expensive when it first came out and I am not buying the 2nd generation just for those little upgrades when they should have got it right the first time. Go figure!!
We should be able to use our own cloud to record to. Forcing us to use rings at a cost per unit at $3 per month is unacceptable! Might be worth it if you give that option after all most people have a cloud nowadays. If not the $30 a year per unit can add up quickly and justify buying your own cloud. So now that amazon owns ring lets hope there listening or at least add this to my prime subscription? I myself am tired of getting fee here fee there and all add up. Come on amazon make this right. My 2tb security system with 4 cameras cost as much as this doorbell with 1 camera and i don't have to pay a monthly fee recording anything on it!
With the second one can the cover be removed while it's on the wall I asked because doesn't that mean the battery can be removed at any time and disabled or is it scrapped In.
I saw a screw hole in the bottom of the battery port and assumed it required the same “special tool” to remove the battery as gen 1 required to remove the entire unit for charging.
hi great video ,i just ordered the first gen version for £89, we are fed up with called callers ,so having one installed so we dont have to answer the dooor
Scottish Jimmy I haven’t activated my subscription yet as I still got 19 days left of the free trial. But I will be paying the small cloud storage fee once it expires. It’s not much mate compare to the household bills you pay already. For the basic plan it’s £2.50 a month or £25 a year. And for the Ring protect plus it’s £8 a month or £80 a year. Definitely worth it in my view.
Good review. But pointless upgrading to Ring 2 IMO. - Removable battery - No benefit. Either way doorbell doesn't work whilst charging (unless you buy a second battery) - Higher res - Ok it's pretty. But functionally pointless. I just wanna see who's at my door. Not zoom in on the number plate of the truck across the street! - Night vision - Most people have a porch light... so again no real benefit. - Price - An extra $100 for some pointless new tech. The only pro of the Ring2? You'll be able to pickup the Ring 1 on special! Lol.
Not a big deal having a removable battery? Its pretty much a game changer as you can have a spare battery and just switch batteries without having to remove the doorbell or wait for the battery to be charged...Missed a valuable point there
I'm happy with our new Ring 1 - however (for new shoppers) be aware, there is a 4 second delay for our camera to start recording. It senses the motion, then warms up to record. It is very cold here in Hamilton, Ontario (more than minus 20 Celcius)l lately. The other night at minus 30 the Ring stopped working altogether. Started working once the sun came up. ...So now I have to find a Ring Doorbell Heater.... lol - - - perhaps I'll put a wool sock over it, with a peep hole! ha ha ha
Ring says it should work between -20.5°C to 48.5°C. Most electronics is going to have trouble working at such temperatures except gadgets that are always on so producing a little local heat. Some have reported success with the Nest cameras in the recent extreme cold, and I wonder if it's because they are always streaming and so keeping warmer.
no matter which one you choose, the night vision stinks; and worth mentioning is you CANNOT turn OFF the night vision, like you can with the Nest, so you will only see black and white at night, whereas with Nest products, you can toggle night vision off and everything is in color at night also. I had the first generation, the lag was so bad that by the time you received the video, all you saw was the back of the head of the person as they were walking away. Also, I had a Ring Floodlight as well as a Nest Camera out front of my house. One night the Nest notification went off, I looked at the video and there's a couple guys trying to break into the car. I immediately called police, who caught them around the corner. The Ring NEVER WENT OFF! I'd never buy a Ring product again.
@@lisaschulz8888 Yes, the Nest is GREAT! Even the app puts Ring's to shame. Also, you can, if you want, mount the camera lower and just put a push button chime ($15) doorbell next to it. You will get a notify on your phone when the person is approaching. I really wanted to like the Ring, but it is just too deficient and unreliable.
Cher a Smile Everyone has different experience but my experience with the Ring is better than my experience with the Nest. But each to their own I guess. 👍
I want to get one of these but live in a country that they steal everything....what is stoping a thief from ripping the doorbell of the wall and taken it or just removing the battery?
Anyone got a ring doorbell that runs off battery, they stupidly now only record 30 secs of record, even if you was getting attacked at your door or after 30 secs of not answering the door it wont record, Major problem for our elderly or crime ridden community. Brad S of Technical Ring Solutions says its in the firmware and can't be changed. #majorproblem #ring #ringdoorbell
What’s to stop someone from stealing everything in your house? Nothing, but they’re on camera doing it and will get arrested. Ring will also replace it for free if stolen, for life
Ashley Davis the ring 2 has the special screws on the bottom of it. If someone were to steal the battery, you’d more than likely have a good 20-30 seconds of footage of them manually removing them that you could use to identify the person.
The viewing range is better on the gen 1 then the gen2 base on my experience. I have both. If you look at this video you can see the you are able to see more of his porch (WHERE PACKAGES 📦 WOULD BE) and gen 2you better quality video but less view range. You see less of the porch.
Confused. You keep mentioning second generation but the product you are showing is Ring 2. Different model. I'm confused. Second generation does not have removable battery. Whole bell needs to come off.
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
They both have crappy unusable video and shouldn't be used for any security recording. The best use I for it found - use the 720p original one since it is much faster to respond, and put a separate 5MP security camera covering the entry door. You can answer the door calls that way and still record much nicer video.

Battery is “not a huge big deal”. I disagree. Many homes have broken wiring issues that are expensive to fix. So knowing the change in battery capacity and longevity is a big issue for some buyers...especially with the upgraded video...how does that impact battery life? Also, my current gen 1 battery is at the end of its life cycle so I have to replace the whole unit rather than just the battery. I won’t have that problem with gen 2 !
Does anyone know how the solar panel is supposed to work ? The 2 screws are for 16 to 36 volts A/C ( in series ) in an existing bell or chime doorbell system If you want to power separate without an existing doorbell power, you need a 24 volt to 36 volts transformer A/C power, but you must have a 100 ohm 50 Watt resistor, to mimic the bell or chime in the circuit So, HOW IS A 6 VOLT SOLAR PANEL THAT IS D/C going to work ?? There has to be a circuit in the doorbell that steps down the voltage, or a circuit to step the voltage up There would need to be a voltage regulator circuit and a sense circuit It would need to pass that DC power straight to the battery I don't see any circuit in the doorbell 2 to pass the DC 6 volts from the solar panel to the battery Anyone who knows how this is supposed to work, PLEASE LET ME KNOW I REALLY WOULD LIKE THE SCHEMATIC FOR THE DOORBELL 2 THANK YOU
The image quality and sound quality is total crap on the 2nd gen version, there is now way you could use it as video evidence. Unless someone gets right up close to the camera, it would be nearly impossible to identify them from more that 5 feet away, all you get is a bad pixelated image of the face as you zoom in.
@@sydneyairbnb9342 I suppose it is an improvement in a way, you have to charge it up regularly otherwise it won't even work as a door bell. Another problem I have found is having to log in when someone rings the doorbell, you have to wait for Ring to send a pin number to verify you are using your own doorbell, by the time you do all this, whoever called is long gone. Did you know that Ring charges a fee if you want the doorbell to continue recording. You are better off buying a proper cctv system, it will work out cheaper in the long run.
When charging the 2nd generation, the rest of the unit is not really secured. The battery itself is part of the mechanism to secure the doorbell as you screw the faceplate to the battery and the faceplate prevents access to the mounting screws. Anyone else noticed this?
Good point! Well with price tag like that on the second generation no way I my leaving it unsecured there anyway. 😂 Unless I’m doing straight swap for the batteries the unit is coming off leaving just the mounting in the wall.
I installed 1st Gen wife bought. I came here looking for reason why standard existing doorbell (not digital) won't work with 13.5V. Note to self: Mow grass before making video. ;-)
