What would have been a great add on to this already amazing video would have been: 1) Data Privacy 2) Cost of extra accessories, for example: SimpliSafe Door/Window sensor VS Ring VS Nest 3) Intergration into Home Automation (to Alexa, Google A or HomeKit). Overall, great job and unbiased opinion.
Professional presentation. I like the "neutral" stance where you let the viewer make the judgement on what features and cost are most attractive! Thank you for the research and insightful commentary. Well done.
I’m glad that I found your channel, but I’m even more ecstatic about your unbiased opinion about all things pertaining to security. I also love your website. Keep up the good work.👍🏾
Bought the SimpliSafe system for our new home because of your videos. We like it so far. One note though...We ended up screwing in all of our entry sensors because one night one of the sensors fell of the window, which set off our alarm. We didn’t realize the system was hooked linked to the monitors yet and our phones were set to “do-not-disturb.” Needless to say the authorities knocked on our door that night around midnight to see what was up. Not a great intro to home security and in other cities you might receive a fine for that sort of thing. All of that said, I recommend using the tiny screws in each sensor pack to ensure they don’t ever fall off.
Truthfully, in terms of quality Nest is the best, but it's also a lot more expensive than either Ring or SimpliSafe, so it depends on what your budget is. More info here: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ
I appreciate his noon commitment to a best because, on the internet, your mileage may vary. What's best for you might not be for me but now we are better informed.
I have a friend who has Ring and he is happy with the notification of his doorbell. I wanted more monitoring with a good customer service as well as a fair price. I had low batteries on a few items right out of the box and they sent me new fresh units, a return envelope with label for returns and they even gave me a few months of free full monitoring. Yes, I went with SimpliSafe and so far happy but there can and will be improvements with our community input. Great unbiased and factual video.
Referencing your statement on Nest sensor orientation, please add a note to your video at 6:36 that SimpliSafe allows either the sensor or the magnet to be fixed to the door.
I am not really interested in the Ring system, but it certainly has a lower initial cost and lower monthly cost. But I do like the fact that the Nest Secure uses Brinks monitoring because I used them in the past. Their system helped stop two burglars in my home. I don’t like that there are no glass break options for the Nest, but I will still go with them at the $19 per month plan.
Hi Alexis, Glad to hear you had a good experience with the Brinks monitoring for Nest! Agreed that I wish they had a glass break sensor and that fire monitoring should be included...but i will say that their monthly prices are going to lower in early next year, so that's a plug. Were you using a Nest Security system when those two burglaries occurred? One major thing to know is back in 2010 ADT Security purchased up Broadview Security. BRINKS Home Security spun off and name changed to BROADVIEW Security around 2009. This might be a completely new BRINKS and not have all the original people behind it.
Can you, if you wish, hang up SimpliSafe's sensors on the wall versus sticking them on? Not all environments will satisfy the use of adhesives, particularly due to temperature and moisture.
Great comparisons. Just installed SimpliSafe for a friend. I'm pretty familiar with technology and network. It took me about 2 hours to get the base stuff working. It was pretty straight forward but 10-15 mins suggested by this video I think is pretty optimistic.
Good video, but what I'm interested in is the camera's these come with and which assistants they work with. I see this video is from 3 years ago, so I need to look elsewhere. Thanks for your info though!
So basically Simplisafe is the best for overall experience but will cost you more and doesn’t have as many compatible home devices like nest does. But Ring is the good enough option that doesn’t cost too much. I think Ring makes sense then, since you probably will spend 99% of your time not thinking about it…as long as you get that professional monitoring + cell back up and a camera then you should be good. The rest is extra
Nice job!!! Cool video, I’m almost tempted to to make one myself!!! Good to see a black man doing something without all of the foolishness and nonsense!!!👍🏾❤️✔️
Great video. Thanks I have a situation where I do not have electric outside near a doorbell. I want to install the SimpliSafe system, but their doorbell camera requires voltage outside. (No external battery option.) They also tell me their system will NOT integrate with any other doorbell cameras. My question here, for you and your viewers is : does anyone know of a security system that will integrate with some other brand's doorbell camera? Or, know of a system that has a doorbell camera that works with its own battery? Thanks again
To get alerts and livestream footage, you will need Internet or cellular backup. However you could use something like SimpliSafe as a local alarm: bit.ly/2XAi5ro
Simpli Safe : Doesn't provide self monitoring unless you purchase pro monitoring at $25 a month, which breaks my heart because that system could have easily been my favorite. ❌ Nest : HIGH price for only a few components. Need to throw in a camera or an extra sensor for over $400? & $30 a month for cellular back up? Great cameras though, but extremely high pricing❌ Ring: Only $10 a month for cellular back up bc wifi can be iffy, most aforbadle security system at $179, buying the security system and buying a camera($100) together is cheaper than nest security system alone, and college apartment friendly with the adhesives✔
simplisafe has a $15/month option that allows live streaming with the camera you get without any recording. So far, that's my favorite option out of all of these and I'm surprised it was never brought up in this video
@@aperkins07 yes but then you don't get the most important thing, Security alerts on your mobile app as well as ability to turn it on and off... the hardware that I was just quoted was almost 400 and I'd need more hardware, that's a long TCO when changing from ADT or another competitor
Most people, I would think, just want to know which one is best (everything considered.) I don't think that this was answered. And, no mention about the batteries the door/window sensors take. Why not?
So basically hackers found a bunch of Ring usernames/ passwords that had been stolen, so the company advised everyone to change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication. People have also criticized Ring for it's partnerships with the police, which the Senate has investigated: bit.ly/2rvTI2o SimpliSafe and Nest haven't had those privacy issues, although Nest is owned by Google which isn't known for being amazing on privacy. I'd say as long as you have a unique, long and complicated password for each account with additional authentication, you will probably be fine. We're looking for a home security system, we have a ring doorbell pro 2 and one of them light fixtures + camera. My concern is the recent reports of Ring sharing data. Should this be a concern? Do you have any details on this at all?
Hi, great question! So basically, the police have to ask you before they can access your footage, and you can say no. However, there have been many security concerns and it's actually being investigated by the government right now. Here's a news article on the investigation from my website- bit.ly/2rvTI2o Ultimately though, you already have the video doorbell, so it makes sense to continue with Ring for your light fixtures and camera, as you'll be able to use everything in one app. Here's my review of the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery: bit.ly/30jnowx
We purchased a simplisafe video doorbell and security system. We did not realize there was a glitch in the system and we received two complete systems (and were charged for two). When we tried to set the system up we had so many issues getting the cameras (including the doorbell camera) to read the QR code we didn't even realize the second box was a duplicate until we were outside of the return window. As a result, they will not allow us to return the duplicate -- they suggested we sell it on eBay to recoup part of our investment. So disappointed in the customer service.
So Simplisafe only allows you to use the app if you buy the most expensive plan? The other providers allow app functionality right out of the box. Not great to be honest.
Hey. I’m gonna do van life a while. Do you know of any cameras that are sleek? The simplysafe camera has good battery life but it looks big. Anything smaller? My van is black, does the simplysafe outdoor camera come in black? Do you know how much the base station draws in power? Either in watts or amps. This is important as I will live in a van.
can you use say.. simplisafe for home security but use ring floodlights on the same system? i mean i dont see why not, its just i like the look of rings floodlights but i like the simplisafe home security system... i just bought a home and havent yet moved in ...soo im just doin a little research
You can use them both but you'd have to use 2 separate apps. More info on the SimpliSafe security system: bit.ly/2XAi5ro And here's an Amazon link for the Ring floodlight camera if you decide on it: bit.ly/2Z0UXCa
I purchased Ring and Simplisafe. Kept the Simplisafe based solely on special pricing. The Ring is easier to install. Simplisafe has very bizarre customer service that I hope I don't have to use beyond getting set up...I called once while installing. Day to day, I am satisfied with the Simplisafe.
They'll only check your cameras if one of your alarms goes off and you don't respond to the notification. More info on Ring vs. Nest vs. SimpliSafe here: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ
Thanks, I agree! We've been a bit behind because of this whole pandemic but going to start posting videos again soon. In the meantime check out the content on my website: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ
Can you reverse the door sensors on the Simplisafe like you did on the Ring sensors to show which door is open? That is my biggest problem not knowing vocally which sensor is triggered
Thanks for the video, very informative. Can any of these device be used with out a monthly contracts? There is absolutely no reason to have alarm monitoring..... Law enforcement is not coming out to check on your house no matter what these companies tell you.
That is definitely not true. I have had the police at my house ,based on a call from a monitoring service, a few times over the years. Luckily, all false alarms.😊
Great video, thank you. I live in Canada and have a question. I own nest door bell and google home. Can the ring system be used only as a stand alone ? I only want the system to notify me with my iPhone. Do not want to pay for monitoring. Thanks
Yes, the Ring can be used as a standalone w/o professional monitoring. You can self-monitor for free with both Nest and Ring. More info on Ring Alarm vs. Nest Secure here: bit.ly/2GXSjWC
Hi, I'm looking at getting smart home alarm security system but i live ion the UK, do you any suggestions. I want it to be Homekit ingrated and Homekit Secure Video
Hi I’m from Israel Will simplisafe work out side the US (I know ring doesn’t) and can I use simplisafe without being connected to a 24/7 base ? I mean just using it for the alarm.. thanks Shay
Is there one of these systems that I can add my wireless sensors on my ADT system? I know Ring has the retrofit kit but from everything I have read that's just for a wired system.
HI Tony, you want to add wireless sensors from something like Ring to your ADT system? There is a longer explanation here, but I want to make sure I understand you properly.
I’m a service tech in the HVAC field and I can tell you if the Nest security system is as unreliable as their thermostats you will have nothing but issues.
I had a horrible experience with Ring. Ordered a full system with extras, and after 1 week (was supposed to ship 3-5 days), they have NO idea where my $320 order is. So I cancelled it. Nest security is nothing but a video doorbell now.
Definitely Nest! Much better cameras, lower monthly costs, the option to self-monitor, free DIY installation and you don't have to sign a three year contract. More info on each in my individual reviews: ADT: bit.ly/2Cad0gi Nest Secure: bit.ly/2ESy50E
I installed all ring doorbells and floodlight cams before purchasing the security system so I am hook, line.sinker in the ring ecosystem that being said what is nice about the ring is...if my house gets busted into all cameras start recording on the exterior of my house and sent to the cloud so if they dregs of society decide to pull all cameras off the side of my house I have footage from ring. I also find the app to be super simple to access with all security features and cameras on the same app. unfortunately every time a shadow or squirrel or bunny crosses my preset zones I get a motion alert. if I sign up for monitoring I also get a break on my homeowners insurance which is better than a kick in the ass. I'm sold on ring
Reading all the comments there is no best in security systems. All of them have their good and bad.I don't have any one of them yet,but I am leaning towards ADT,because it's the easiest to understand and no matter what, your going to get screwed somewhere.
Hi, as far as built-in sirens go, Ring's is the loudest at 104 decibels. However, SimpliSafe does offer an auxiliary siren that's 105, but it's not in the base station (that one is quieter). More info on Ring vs. Nest vs. SimpliSafe here: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ
We try to make our guides as comprehensive as possible, but there is always plenty more for us to go into. Check back in the future and we might tackle adt.
@@SecurityDotOrg alright thanks, i am now a subscriber, and i just have heard a lot (good and bad) about them, just wanted to get an opinion from someone that at the very least looks like they know what they're doing (way more than me, that's for sure lol)! 😀
Brinks was a complete disaster after I moved with my Nest Secure. I was paying for almost a year of nonfunctional professional monitoring service-they were unable to connect to my base station when the alarm was triggered. After countless hours with Brinks and Google reps, they finally admitted it was unsupported and I demanded a refund for the faux service. Truly terrible support and poor communication between the two companies-clearly the relationship went south hard. It’s a shame, because the Nest hardware is amazing. Avoid at all costs if you need/want pro monitoring!
