Yooo dem actors are acting like Kids in kindergarden when they play some fairytale for fun. Every shot, of this show is shit, i swear, every split second something is out of place, plain stupid or just annoying. Golum is even more likeable and relatable than all the characters. immagine being 20k year old elven smith and you dunno how to make a fucking rings from 3 metals Immagine that u look for Sauron for centuries and when you bump into him and spend 2 months with him, you dont even have the slightest suspision.
At least you feel sorry for him at times, but these "characters" especially iwish Hobbits, I was hoping that they'll die in very painful, horrific death. I'm rooting for Sauron to enslave Middle Earth and may Morgoth sooner return to take out the trash.
From a casual viewer perspective I find the plot disjointed. The LOTR movies can be watched without knowing any lore prior, and have a decent understanding of the world and characters/races by the end. Rings of Power just doesnt make sense. It's just disjointed events happen to characters with no arcs or development.
as someone who has yet to _completely_ watch all the LOTR movies (i've watched 2 of the movies and remember important moments/few snippets from others) and only watched half of the show cause my ma put it on-i second this. although i haven't watched all the movies from LOTR, i can certainly say that the movies contain a cohesive, logical, and interesting plot/story with notable characters where you care about the journeys and developments made throughout. like you said, "the LOTR movies can be watched without knowing any lore prior...", but i can't say the same for Rings of Power lol i watched at least 4 episodes from this show, with two of them back-to-back-even with the context from previous episodes, it was a cluster of jumbled details and things meshed up together in an uninteresting, dull mass. i get i haven't watched the entirety of the show or all of the LOTR movies, and i'm definitely no expert in things LOTR, but it's a pretty worrying indicator if the viewer has a hard time understanding anything of what's going on screen / is disinterested because it feels monotonous when no sense of importance on anything is established; nothing made me want to actively watch the show or caught my attention. correct me if im wrong tho cause who knows, maybe there are a few vital, important episodes or moments that makes this show decent at the minimum-but that's my observation from the episodes i watched
@@travelsizedhispasian Yeah, I literally had no idea what the hell was happening. Like I felt dissociated from it, as if I was watching something no different from watching a static screen with different colors moving about in a complete mess: actually that would be more interesting than this.
the events of this show are connected by the phrase 'and then-'. The understanding of the audience hinges on the fact that they already have understanding of the lore, and even then, the showrunners twist it into something else entirely lol
Peter Jackson in the first 7 minutes of the fellowship of the ring manages to outline everything required for someone who has never heard of the LOTR to have an innate understanding of the story. The show in 8 hours of run time is barely able to tell a consistent story let alone one without as many holes and inconsistencies.
Now that I've watched it, I think the Harfoot's "Nobody goes off trail, and nobody walks alone," isn't a motto: it's the rules. You go off trail, we leave you. You walk alone, we leave you.
This is quite possibly the worst tv show I’ve ever seen. I hate nearly everything about it. I think a few of the actors actually are pretty talented, however the writing, dialogue, and the way those characters personalities are made are so terrible I can’t even like the few talented actors. The makers of this show don’t understand how distance or time work. They change nearly everything they actually use from Tolkien 180 degrees and ruin everything. I started the season as a 4/10, but by the end it’s down to a 1/10. I think that 1 point is because I find Bronwyn quite attractive. (south land lady)
Excellent video, well said. It’s so bizarre that Elves and dwarfs who are separate race to humans would have the same race diversity, just doesn’t make sense. And same with the hobbits, who notoriously never leave their village, somehow is racially diverse. I would have love to have seen Easterlings and Haradrim characters fleshed out :(
the actors were picked not because of their skin, but because of their acting capabilities, the artistic representation doesn't exactly mirror what is actually within the lore, its like with the ride of the rohirrim, during their charge into battle the song obviously wasn't playing over the battlefield but through the artistic representation of the battle the song was added over the charge in post production because it added to the effect of the scene, the actors may be black but it doesn't mean that their characters are, its just due to their acting capabilities being what the production team were after so they were hired.
To be fair the shadow of games are far better than this shit cmon lets be real yes they fuck up the lore but they are cool action rpgs and the devs never said we are an adaptation. They just blended fan fiction and canon to make a story that serves the nemesis system
I think the show actually makes perfect sense if you look at it this way - the events of the second age here are portrayed from Sauron's point of view. It's as if he broke the fourth wall, saw the LOTR trilogy and decided to show the viewer his take on the Middle-earth and why his struggle to dominate, control and instill order is justified: - Galadriel is a spoiled elven she-brute in a dress, applying her abilities not for order and concord, but for endless hostility and bickering, placing herself above any foes or allies - Celebrimbor is half-decent, as he could be manipulated into making rings of power. Viewed by Sauron as severely lacking in craftsmanship (not knowing what alloys are) and requiring guidance to produce the rings - Gandalf is a bumbling fool with too much power - Isildur, his father, men of Numenor and all men in general are weak, discordant and corrupt - Dwarves are isolationists who want nothing to do with other races of Middle-earth, as long as they are free to pursue their endless avarice and exploit the earthen depths - Hobbits are unwashed, inconsequential people preoccupied with their own petty comfort, caring neither for the world, nor for their own kin - Orcs are actually good creatures, who despite their appearance have unity amongst themselves and loyal to their leader, capable of bringing order to the lands of Middle-earth - Halbrand - he himself - never actually did anything vile or deceiving while having a fair body. Rather had to witness all kinds of madness, that eventually drove him to Mordor
Yes if the show was on purpose designed to been seen from Annatar's / Halbrand's / Sauron's point of view then this would logical. However, Tolkien's 2nd age story is portrayed from the men and the Elves's point of views. Also this show is definitely portrayed from Guy - lad - rieeeel's point of view as she is in nearly everything important. Hence, show runners epic fail.
LOTR had a main protaganist in Frodo, a hobbit who couldn't fight very well, and did not want to be a hero and even doubted his own strength and will to do what was asked of him, though he took it upon himself to try. Without the Fellowship and later Sam by his side and Gollum to guide them, he would never have got as far as Mount Doom, and even then, he failed at the very last moment due to the power the One Ring had over him after such a long and arduous journey, showing why Gandalf himself feared possessing the One Ring. Tolkien let his main protaganist fail at the last. Consider how brave a choice that was. All to prove how the One Ring overpowers you in the end, no matter how good you are. But no, what do they give us: A obsessive Warrior Queen Galadriel who demands help all the time and has no doubts in herself wotsoever and the Harfoots.
They could have easily NOT ghosted Peter Jackson, played it safe and handed this over to him. He's like the George Lucas of Lord of the Rings. With that kind of budget (60 mil per ep) he'd have probably created a masterpiece of a show. With no interference from the studio that is...
I wouldn't compare Jackson to George Lucas. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a masterpiece. The Hobbit wasn't great, but a big part of that was studio interference. He was basically being asked to polish a turd.
Thank you for the comment on the Haradrim and Easterlings, something I have been saying (screaming really) from day 1. What an opportunity to explore these ancient cultures, show these people "of color" to be extremely advanced, and explain why they ended up on Sauron's side. Nope! Much easier to have Dwarves that rarely see sunlight, and Elves well described in cannon, be of darker complexion. This whole thing is just an excercise in laziness. Jackson had 1/3d the budget, and created a masterpiece. These people took a billion dollars....and just pissed it away.
They could have even paddled the message that colonialism is bad with their portrayal of the Numenoreans and how they treated "lesser" men. And how Sauron ultimately corrupted them. Then he gets "captured" by the Numenoreans and starts corrupting their king over decades to finally fall to hubris and sail to Valinor.
I’m starting to see a trend with these new tv shows, Rings of Power and Halo, where the show runners take an already amazing story/universe and change it to appeal to a “broader” audience while alienating the old fans
I like you don't hold back mate it's a breath of fresh air, keep up the good work and never be afraid to speak the truth from fear of being in-politically correct

I'm honestly just so sad they butchered Tolkien's world by this much. Would've loved to see this adapted in it's full glory but here we are, just why couldn't we have the writers from House of the Dragon instead.
Dude...I've seen a few reviews on this show and they are all on point and hilarious but this one is the best. Thank you for spitting this all out quickly with 0 fluff. I subscribed already and don't even know the name of your channel. Imma go peep out your name now.
I love how diversity plays a HUGE role in The Rings of Power. Galadriel is a literal Karen and all real life Karens will be so happy that they are now finally represented!
Best commentary video about the ROP that I've watched so far! I especially like it that you have a calm voice and the delivery of your criticism is objective and neutral
As far as I know Sindarin and Quenya phonetically have a strong R similar to Spanish or the old Norse languages, so the pronunciation should not be with the same phonetics as modern English. and perhaps that is one of the few moderately positive points of this series.
Agreed. As Tolkien based Quenya on Finnish, phonetically the “r” sounds about right in the show. Otherwise, the show was wrong in so many ways that I wouldn’t even know where to start. 😅
Appreciate your passion and knowledge. This and every other review I've seen that isn't bought and paid for has the same tone so I'm less tempted than ever to find and watch the thing.
I’ve watched so many of these reviews, this one was the absolute best. They’re ALL great in the sense that they’re call out Rings of Power as absolute shyte, but you’re break down and points were just perfect 👏👌🙏💗
And it should be said that Isildur's sister Eärien will build the Temple of Morgoth and Sauron will make her do it.we'll see that in season 2 of ring of power.
Get this: I have Prime and I haven't watched a single second of this show. But I have watched many hours of criticism of every aspect of this show, and I doubt the show itself is even 1% as entertaining as that. Keep up the good work, RU-vidrs.
She had two other brothers Aegnor and Angrod. The other Palantiri where with Elendils father Amandil in Anduniae. They tried to utterly destroy the characters of the elves.
Just found (and subbed) your channel. Your reasoned arguments and discussion blows gaping holes in the utter travesty that RoP is. It's utter trite nonsense of the worst order and an insult to Tolkien's legendarium. I still can't see how it ever got made in this form.
What I want to know is regarding her placing that one helmet on the side of that big pile of helmets.........Who put the helmets on the top without knocking down all the rest of the helmets? Unless the ones on top were suspended in mid air and they worked their way down? 🤔🤣
You know what I think about the show? I don’t care for it. I watched the first episode and immediately knew what kind of vibe they were going for. I saw the forced diversity and was annoyed they didn’t exploit the already existing racial differences in Tolkien’s world instead of copy pasting modern society over it. I also disliked the heavy diversion from the source material and honestly nearly fell asleep while watching. It was a challenge to keep my attention towards the show. I must’ve grabbed for my phone at least 5 times. I decided to stop watching this trainwreck after sitting through episode 1. I just don’t care for it. I don’t feel like I’m missing out at all and now Rings of Power will just be another series I will never watch. Can’t be disappointed if you’re not invested in it, right?
The dialogue reminds me of the atrocious dialogue in the horrible Disney Star Wars trilogy “we are the spark that will light the fire that will bring down the first order” 🤮
This seems to be a show runner mandate: Any guy has to be made incompetent (unless he’s a villain) and any male character from the source material that has to be competent to move the plot forward is changed to a woman.
The interesting thing about the political side of it, is that Tolkien's work didn't need those additives to have been politically correct. For example with Galadriel--in Tolkien's lore, she's already a very strong, respected, and powerful woman. We can see this even in Cate Blanchett/PJ's portrayal of the character, whose presence commanded respect without saying a word. Or Eowyn, with her "I am no man" scene as she obliterates the witch king. Even if they weren't written as "strong women" arcs by Tolkien, they could easily be seen as such without ever deviating from the lore. As per the racial thing... what truly bothered me was that scene at the bar where Arondir was told by a white dude to "let go of the past." I'm quite left leaning when it comes to politics. But that scene in the show for me left such a bad taste in my mouth. It's like the equivalent of seeing a product advertisement in the show. Very hamfisted and only exists to bait people and check boxes. Tolkien's original lore would have been completely fine, even in the politically correct spectrum, if they just left it alone.
The PC BS is just the tip of the iceberg. The rings of plunder simply drips with incompetency in practically every conceivable way. This became apparent to me when it literally failed to keep me awake. Every episode for three episodes I fell asleep. Actually watching it is for someone else. I salute your 'tolerance'! My brain told me I had better things to do....like studying the undersides of my eyelids. The 3rd episode I got ready for bed so I didn't crash on the couch. So I gave up watching. IMO, 3 strikes is fair for baseball, as well as felons. How rings of plunder hacked Tolkien's work is unforgivable. Maybe the best thing the producers could do in the 2nd season is for Guyladriel to realize the 1st season was just a bad dream! Haha, my dreams rarely make much sense! Perhaps I don't possess enough imagination. I'm ENTERTAINED by all these critics and roasts. Rings of plunder was an excellent cure for insomnia personally. That's the best thing I can say about it.
After watching several videos tearing this garbage show apart I can only say I'm incredibly happy with my decision to never watch the show. Tolkien's world will stay pure in my mind, thank you very much.
Funny how House of the Dragon actually managed to do inclusivity right. The decision to have the Velaryon's be black actually made sense seeing as Essos does predominantly have tan and dark-skinned people towards the east, which is where Valyria is. Also played a particularly helpful plot beat with the parentage of Rhaenyra's boys.
Great video mate. Show is an absolute debacle. Has been perhaps the first piece of entertainment where the commentary videos are way more interesting than the actual show. Keep it up.
And it should be said that Isildur's sister Eärien will build the Temple of Morgoth and Sauron will make her do it.we'll see that in season 2 of ring of power.
I never watched ONE SINGLE frame of this TV Show. I have no Netflix, no Amazon Prime, no Facebook, no Instagram, no Twitter, no TikTok... No Job, No Car, No Girlfriend, No Future, No Dick...... (cit.) ... and I actually discovered the existence of this TV show just today, because somebody linked a RU-vid vid. So I googled for it and that's the very first thing I've watched about this show. I've not even watched one single trailer of it, ever. And I'll do myself a favor and won't watch it LMAO Thanks EBR guy! I owe you a cup of coffee.
2:36 "I could care less about any of them" should be "I couldn't care less...". Sating you could care less is meaningless. Saying you couldn't is saying that it is not possible for you to care any less, because you already care as little as possible.
They really dont get how mystical speeches work dont they? None of the times they try to speak in a cool way they end up being cool, actually end up looking awkward, they are weightless, emotionless, substanceless, they have mo reason of being.
It's an absolute clusterfuck so I gave up on trying to explain this shit and just roasted it instead. Props to this chap for actually trying to go through it!
Aren't the writers a couple of 20 somethings with no experience of life or understanding of comradeship or even going on a camping trip and the thrill of an adventure, the directors been chopped and changed from one mediocre one to another.. such a sad state of affairs
The showrunners didn't care about Tolkien at all, it was nothing more than a vehicle to sell their terrible politics to customers that wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.
RoP is such an insult to Tolkien's creation and its fans that there should be no controversies. Galadriel was never an overreacting teenager, Sauron was never a human and Tolkien looking from above surely be like "look how they massacred my boy". I always prayed for a Silmarillion adaptation and now I'm praying that they NEVER get their hands on it.
As I understand it, the showrunners did not have the rights to 'The Silmarillion' - the Tolkien estate refused them. So, while they could use many of the *characters and settings* from Middle Earth that were also in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit (which were already available since Peter Jackson's far superior movies - yes, even The Hobbit trilogy!) they were extremely limited by what they couldn't use from The Silmarillion, so they had to fill in the chasms with their own, made-up stuff. Which is not to excuse the terrible way in which they executed it; if you're creating new material from Tolkien's source, you better bring your A+ game when it comes to writers - and they didn't.
As far as I know the Amazon Studios did not have the rights to The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales but I really don't know whether or not there are many storys about the Second Age in it. I know, if I am right here, that there a stories about Númenor up until the end of the Second Age in them, so the show runners couldn't use any lore for Númenor out of it for their stories in ROP. But anyway, they had the rights for the Appendices of the LotR Books to use but I am not sure what's in there to make a coherent story out of it. Someone here who can help me out?
Great video and breakdown. I just hope that good writing is something that returns in movies and shows. A character's gender should not dictate whether or not they are good or bad. Fantasy is supposed to be creative and imaginative, yet this show just stinks in so many ways. 😔
My wife and I watched about the first 20 minutes for the hell of it. In it we see a thunderstorm taking place in the middle of a raging snowstorm. I explained to my wife how this would physically be impossible, but they did it anyway.
Best thing that pissed me off was the term “novel purist” said by an interviewer, and the fact some or most actors said they “love Tolkien’s works”. So, what exactly do you mean by that? His works? Name anything he published you read, or even something unrelated to his most famous books!Absolute twats. Promoted as a female movie with representation, at last equal rights has been distinguished! This whole show has made me beyond angry and a bit insulted.
