Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is here to dethrone Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon as the new biggest show on TV. But did it? The seasons are still ongoing I guess, but based on the pilot episode, House of the Dragon comes on top. Which is strange because both shows feature a lot of the fantasy elements. So in today's episode of One v One, let's compare these two shows with each other to see how the fantasy side of House of the Dragon is handled in such a way that it's much easier for casual audiences to get into the story... than compared to Rings of Power.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence rings of power vs house of the dragon rings of power bad show good show trash house of the dragon good show bad show trash rings of power watch free online free house of the dragon watch free online free shocking moments only action pilot episodes is house of the dragon better than rings of power of evil to Middle-earth. The fact that Galadriel's motivation to avenge her brother might as well not even exist because after the pilot she pretty much just attacks, threatens and insults basically anyone she sees. It's almost like a tragedic character who cannot be free of her own hatred, but the show is trying to tell you that she is the good one and everyone else is wrong. This isn't just a Lord of the rings thing this is just plain horrible writing and any franchise, any story can be tainted by such arrogance. The Game of Thrones universe always centered their stories around human emotion and motivation. It was their driving force and they captivate you with moments like the iron throne scene in episode 8. It's really simple without any context, but since they pulled you into the emotions and motivations of Viserys, you also felt emotional. Rings of Power didn't just lack any of that, they avoided it in any way shape or form.

That's the sole reason why GoT got it's traction in the first place. The basic principle is: dont tell, show In Rings of Power characters often just tell how they feel, like Galadriel explains 100 times that she is angry and the audience just has to take it. In HotD they have introduced the characters slowly and demonstrated the motivation and character of each person. Issue is in RoP when they tried to show something it then didnt make sense, people did nonsensical things, they got both aspects wrong, its a classic example of people who dont know or understand the material they are drawing from and want to do their vision of it. issues arise when it breaks the fundamental rules of that world. they would have been better off doing something new instead of a bastardization of a beloved and well known franchise.

High peaks of season 1 for both shows: RoP : 3 small ships of Valinorans carrying 300 warriors + (minimum) 300 horses + food, tents and other equipment engage "Deus ex Machina" style "epic battle" with a couple of hundred Orcs in a small village that represents whole region of Southlands, slicing down scores of enemies with a CHAIN HANDHELD BY A COUPLE OF HORSEMEN (!!!) and being victorious, of course, followed by threat of genocide of the whole race spoken by a lead "hero". HoTD: A single man, rotten by leprosy, physically half-dead king makes an agonizing last grand entrance and walk of pure pain to save his kingdom and heritage. No contest between the two.

Well, now that we have the bigger picture, that bezos' show got progressively worse, and House got progressively better, we can confirm much of what's been said here. The reason for House's success is not exactly the fantasy elements, it's the characters and the amazing story. One of their most incredible series is just king viserys walking to a throne, because of how invested we are in the characters. There were no dragons in that scene. P.S.: House is pretty good so far. Completely agree. This comes to prove franchises are worth nothing with poor writing. Another con in ROP, to me, is that they use super famous characters, like Elrond and Galadriel, and change the lore completely. Meaning they didn't even take advantage of having such well-known chars to build their story upon. Instead of bringing new chars, like HOTD, they twisted canon names and left many scratching their heads, myself included. Like, Galadriel single and in armor in the Second Age? She was living with Celeborn in some woods by then and couldn't care less about war. I know strong female leads are the trend, but hey, they could have spent a few of their zillion dollars on a good writer with a slight idea about the franchise world, right?

Honestly, while I’m someone who prefers holding to the lore as well, I would’ve been content with these famous characters being *consistent* with how they’ve already been established. We know they’re both over one thousands of years old, so it seems very unlikely they (particularly Galadriel) would act SO stupid, hasty and belligerent. Their personalities would have long since established, and it just seems super unlikely that a stupid, hasty, belligerent elf would chill to become glowy-glowy mirror queen after another thousand years. I feel like you could make the less personal approach work, as long as you actually take the time to make your audience invested in the world instead, which RoP failed to do. For example: why would we care about Valinor? As RoP portrayed it, Valinor just seemed like a normal place with some nice trees. I mean, introducing it with a scene about bullying, didn't exactly make it feel like paradise. And yet it's the only scene we got about daily live in what is supposed to be like heaven for the elves. It makes the destruction of the trees as well as Galadriel's choice to not go back so much less impactfull. They did try to make you care about Harfoot society though, which might have been nice, if they didn't undermine all of the "hearts bigger than our feet" stuff with unnecessary cruelty, every time the plot demanded it. You want to help this confused old man, you found alone in the forest? Well, how about we doom your entire family to certain death instead? Very big hearts indeed... They also tried a bit with Numenor, which I actually think they did a good job with in the third episode. Then came the "elves are taking our jobs" speech and it all went downhill from there. Just pretty disappointing over all.

Actually, something I noticed is that Filmento was able to explain the story of HOTD without explaining all the fantasy elements (man, he didn't even explain what dragons have to do with the story). Whereas in RoP he was forced to explain a lot of fantasy background to tell what the story is about. I don't know if HOTD could integrate the fantasy elements a little more into its story and not just leave it as a background (and if that is better or not), but it definitely shows the priorities of the show.
@hypothalapotamus5293
@hypothalapotamus5293 Год назад
GRRM's stories are anthropocentric. If you understand people, you understand why GRRM's characters do what they do. The fantasy elements are mostly of interest in how they alter human behavior. HOTD focuses heavily on the Targaryen family tree, whose structure is heavily influenced by fantasy elements. The power to control dragons is the reason for their godlike status and rule, but it is dangerous if it turns against itself (dragon riders have way too much power and this has a destabilizing effect). Incestuous marriages are as much to keep dragon power united as to keep a pure Valyrian bloodline. The first half of the season is devoted to most sane individuals (e.g. Lyonel Strong) trying to reunite Jahaerys' legitimate descendants through marriage (The Velaryons are descended from the first son Aemon, while Rhaenyra is descended from Baelon and Daella), but these efforts lead to general unhappiness (characters are not compatible with these rational requirements) and are thwarted when Viserys makes a hightower branch with a competing claim. In contrast to this careful interplay between human and fantasy elements, we have ROP which is devoid of humanity and has lore that isn't really canon.

More than any other genre, I believe fantasy can suffer from excessive worldbuilding. Some writers become so obsessed with the world they created that the world stops telling the story and the story starts telling the world. This appears to be the chief trap RoP fell into that Hot D avoided. Granted, this problem usually applies to high schoolers cranking out their first Wheel of Time ripoff, not billion dollar TV shows, but that’s neither here nor there.
@AlirioAguero2
@AlirioAguero2 Год назад
Sure, there is a fine line between an overdone and an underdeveloped worldbuilding in fantasy, and the author needs to know where that line is. Show too little, and the characters will seem to float within an empty world, only interacting with characters and objects that are somehow crucial to the plot. There will be no intrigue to hook the audience to find out more about this world. On the other hand, when the plot is crammed with too much information and too much sub-plots, one will get confused and give-up on investing into that world.

The most important reason is 'cause GRRM wrote an awesome story with a fantastic lore. HOTD is based on the book fire and blood which was written by the original writer of the series. That is why the writing is good and the show works. Tolkien's world building and lore is rich but lacks the original magic that he could have provided and the writers on the show are not on par with is. Just look at what D&D did with the last season of GOT. They butchered the outline 'cause they did not have GRRM's writing and his pacing to guide them. LOTR is supposed to be light vs dark, good vs evil and has very clear white and black sides which is what Tolkien wanted and it works brilliantly for his time meanwhile GRRM lowkey propelled morally corrupt characters and a world of brutality where no side is right and commit atrocities in the fantasy genre. There is no clear cut good guy in his stories and that is what people want these days. Take HOTD for example. Both the fractions are absolutely horrible and no one is doing anything for the actual people of the realm, their subjects. If they made the greens a clear cut cardboard villain and the blacks the feminist girl boss then it won't work. For the story to work, you need to find both sides compelling. The greens and the blacks conflict makes sense 'cause the dance was unavoidable and would have happened no matter what. You hate the characters yet defend them. Daemon and Aemond are absolute psychopaths who commit mass genocides yet are the fan favourite. They are the bad guys of both the fraction yet stand out. It's the complexities and nuances that stand out.

She acts like knows-it-all, bossy, and think she can do better than any men and she's supposed to be a grown ass woman, how embarrasing. There was a tweet from the RoP showrunners saying they wanted to make Sauron like Heisenberg because in the LotR books and Peter Jackson movies, he seemed like an unconquerable and all knowing darkness and absolute evil. So they literally said "screw the source material, we are gonna do what we want and what we think is better because we paid for it" Because what Amazon dreads to accept it's that yes, Tolkien world IS black and white, and people who like LotR (personally not me) is because it is black and white with it's themes. There's no postmodern tropes, there's no evil in good and good in evil besides that face value details. The hero is the hero and the villain is the villain. But for some reason they decided to take that IP with those tropes and turn them into whatever they wanted it to be, even if it wasn't supposed to be that. But oh well, money and the Halo effect right ?
@Here_is_Waldo
@Here_is_Waldo Год назад
I'm not sure that's what Tolkien was going for. In TLOTRs, Sauron was really just an obstacle. A force without any real personality outside of 'Thing to defeat'. TLOTRs isn't entirely Black and White, it's more saying that it's up to the individual to decide who they will be and if they can resist temptation. Boromir for example genuinely wanted the Ring to save his kingdom, a noble and good act on the face of it. Yet he also wanted the praise and recognition of being the one to save everyone, stroking his ego and pride; which is ultimately what got him killed as those were traits the Ring manipulated. A good man doing bad things for grey reasons.
@Prikense
@Prikense Год назад
yeah lotr is not black and white, the boromir example i think is the best, but there also is saruman, who tried to study the ring and the arts of sauron to better understand his enemy and then thought he could put order to the world better, by being its master, so out of good came evil, and there is also the other way around, the orcs who capture pippin and merry are warriors who are described as loyal and brave, and even when surrounded they fight to the bitter end, traits that other hero characters like aragorn or eomer also posses so althought they are orcs and evil, there are some good elements in them. You can also go way back to the older stories where elves, who traditionally are good, do evil stuff for what they think are good reasons, like maintaining an oath

Sauron just like Morgoth were the personnification of evil . They don't have any redeeming quality. Tolkien didnt create them to be character who became evil . They were from the start...and this guys want to take breaking bad as influence when they barely set the tone for it
@Prikense
@Prikense Год назад
 @Rijus Nar but that is where you are wrong, they were not born evil, they became evil because they tried to do what they wanted and went against god to do it, morgoth became evil because he was desperate nothing was happening and he wanted to create the world, and tried to supplant god to do it, then he tought he knew better how to make the world and was an ass to everyone else who actually tried to make the world, then he loved too much the world and tried to govern it. Sauron was a maiar just like gandalf or melian, of the order of aule, aka a minor god of crafting and stuff, he tought melkor was not evil and tought he (melkor) could put order to things, because what sauron wants is to put order to the world, that is not inheritably evil, but the way they want to do it is the reason they are evil. after melkor was defeated sauron went on his own and tought he could do it better and actually he had more success than melkor at having a big kingdom, still he was a tyrant. Evil in tolkien is not something you are just born with, he wrestled with the orcs a lot for this reason because he didnt know what to do with them because they were born evil. Another good example that has spoilers is the numenoreans, they become divided between the faithful and the unfaithful, they reject the gods and try to got to war with them so god intervines and destroys their island which was gifted by the gods for their ancestors' service during the first age vs melkor, but not all of them die, some become the founders of gondor and arnor and others become pirates and the black numenorians. So they started as good and gifted by the gods with super strenght, height, longer lifespan, but became greedy and cruel and enslaved others and eventually betrayed the gods and were killed themselves. I am not defending the show tho, the writing and pacing is so bad, they focus too much on the lore without actually making the people care for it, while at the same time butchering so old fans are not satisfied. With sauron they can try to make him somewhat likeable, at least his motivation, which they kinda did but that doesnt excuse everything else they did wrong. IMO the sauron twist at the end was the least of the problems the show had, so lets not get too fixated on if sauron is grey or not (which could be argued he kinda is, but a very dark shade of grey). We should be talking more about how a sword of dubious origin was just lying there and has some blood activated magic but actually its just the key to unleash mount doom? or how the numenoreans are kinda bad already and hate the elves but why?, or how they created the 3 rings, which are the most powerfu, with sauron instead of creating the other 16 that were stolen by sauron later? or how the timeline makes no sense, they built the forge in like a week and the numenoreans get to mordor in like 2 days, or how galadriel who wants to destroy sauron decides to go on a sidequest to make a king on a land which she now knows sauron wanted to make a stronghold there because he left the mark everywhere to signal it but she doesnt think that maybe the people who are there are might not be the best friends of the elves because of their history fighting them (then again, numenor hates them too now for whatever reason so who knows) and maybe she should inform the high king of her findings before going to war with nothing because there is nothing there yet but they dont know that, sauron could be there and be preparing his armies as far as they know, so a small party of 2 or 3 ships of numenorean cavalry might not be enough. Finally, why would sauron leave a mark on everything pointing to mordor, even when he was under the service of melkor (like finrod)? and why was sauron in the middle of the sea? was he going to valinor to be judged as he had repented or was he just drifting away for no reason?

that comparison is the embodiment of plot driven stories vs character driven stories (by the way, Viserys has 2 choices : either he does nothing, and his wife dies because of the blood loss that a complicated birth implies, of he cuts her open and try to save the baby. In both cases, Aemma dies in pain, but in one he has the chance to save his baby. People are giving Viserys a lot of flak for a choise that pretty much anybody would have made, even though letting Aemma in the dark about his intentions until she sees the blade cutting her open wasn't the brigtest way to do it)

To be fair, HotD has an easier fantasy to set up. The only real magical element present in the story are the dragons, and otherwise, is just a normal medieval setting. We may not know the names of the countries and people, but we do know the basics of how that kind of world works out of our own knowledge. RoP, meanwhile, needs to stablish a lot more of stuff. Elves, orcs, dark lords, hobbits... But yeah. Even with that, RoP was definetly much more exposition heavy. HotD just tends to hilate those things into dialogues.
@viljamtheninja
@viljamtheninja Год назад
The thing is, Peter Jackson's LotR-films also had to introduce all those elements, but he did it in a natural way, all as key elements of Frodo's journey that felt significant BOTH as worldbuilding AND as part of his personal story which is something the viewer could connect with, which gave more emotional purpose and weight to all the lore stuff.
@Jaegerofficial
@Jaegerofficial Год назад
RoP does not have to establish everything at once, instead if they focus on an order of investment into the story, and from there a buildup to each race, when it is NEEDED, it will be more of a journey. Not because of nostalgia. Meanwhile that fantasy is crammed into the first episode. They should know if there is alot of fantasy to take more time for progressing the stories.

The lack of human logic is a big theme in TRoP. Part of it is due to Tolkien's writing on the books not really giving a hell about human logic in his high fantasy universe, a bigger part of it is sub-par screen-writing. It does not get any better in the later episodes, it actually gets a lot worse in that regard.

The Silmarilion, and the entire myth that Tolkien wrote, is full of human emotion, love, loss, triumphs and disasters in equal measure. Tragic stories, tragic events, victories and defeats all around. There isn't a single character he created, whether that character is an elf, a dwarf, a Maiar, a Valar or a human that doesn't have motivations, ambitions, flaws and virtues in equal measure. And all of those are things we all can understand and feel. So no. It isn't Tolkien's writing that misses human emotion and feeling. That is entirely on the screenwriters. The material is impeccable, right there with all the worlds classic literature. His characters always have a reason for their actions, and most of the time the actions they take are the product of their desires and ambitions. Same as every human on the face of the planet. It doesn't matter if the character is an elf or a human. His or her actions and choices are always explained in a way that makes sense. Take Luthien for example. She is one of the most important characters in the entire myth. She is an Elven princess that fell in love with Beren, a human. Her actions after meeting Beren are always actions that can be explained because of her love and the conflict that union brings between her elven heritage and immortality and her desire to be with Beren. Another example is Feanor, the most gifted and powerful Elf to ever exist. He is almost perfect in everything he does, But, he is also extremely proud and when slighted and humiliated, his pride demands to punish the perpetrator even if that action goes against the wishes of the Valar, the Gods of Tolkien's world. All the actions he takes after that event are actions that make sense when you know his character. Because the characters of Men and Elves are not that different. There is a different perspective in the way they view life since one is immortal and the other an ephemeral human being, but, the core elements of the social norms and behaviors are essentially the same. They get angry, they laugh and cry same as normal people. If you want to blame someone for the mess the RoP is, look no further than the showrunners and writers. They are hacks that wouldn't know a good story even if they had it in front of them.

@@kpetalis I never said anything about a lack of human emotion or feelings in Tolkien's work. I wouldn't dare. I specifically mentioned a lack of human *logic* which is what Filmento noted as well, and how that's a consequence of high fantasy writing. I don't disagree with you on a single thing you wrote.

The contrasting quality between the two shows only continues to widen through the season. HotD (while not perfect) was seemingly written by a literary Nobel/Pulitzer prize winner, and RoP was a student project that was rushed, and written while the student was hungover from drinking too many White Claws the night before.

The only good characterization in RoP comes from the relationship between Elrond and Durin (which takes place later in the season). We know why we should care about the both of them, and what is driving them. We understand what it means to be friend with an elve (Durin is sad cause Elrond dont visit him much cause he doesnt understand that life is shorter for dwarves), and it provides good humor (the dining scene when they talk about the table)... Its a shame to have only one interesting subplot, it almost feel like everything about those 2 wasnt written by the same writers that wrote everything else.

The fantasy elements being secondary is surprisingly important for any fantasy's overall quality. Replace the dragons with, idk, a trebuchet or a flamethrower or some other weapon. When you realize it's just a symbol for power, it can be anything, and you really can see the importance of the human story

Not really unless if you characterize the dragons as people than their not as interchangeable as mere weapons! The dragons CAN disobey and do whatever they want when they choose to do so as seen with Aemond’s dragon during the final episode.

I just found this video... and I laughed soooo hard. Every time you've mentioned 'Maybe I'm missing lore' in RoP, the lore actually contradicts what's happening on screen. You: " Maybe all this fantasy stuff might be really cool for fans who already understand it... " Fans: " What's this? This is simply bullshit and not lore accurate. Wait, *when* are we, because these things happened, like, hundreds of years apart. Who's this rando? Where is that other super important character? Why is this person here instead of....... etc. " You: " Maybe I'm missing the context, and the elves can't leave their homeland. " Fans: " Huh??? The Noldor were *banished*. They are forbidden from returning. So why are they just... sent back?????? HOW????? "

They should have started rings of power way earlier in the story, not only did they rush over the most interesting parts but they really failed to establish any real stakes, either for the world at large or for the characters individually

I truly do not have much interest in the world of Game of Thrones, books or movies. On the flipside I grew up with Lord of the Rings and adore it to this day. I have never properly watched all of Game of Thrones and had only the most superficial, social osmosis / random youtube video understanding of what House of the Dragon would be about. Episode 1 got me invested immediately, just to see what how these characters would ruin and devastate each other. And then it managed in the span of a few episodes to get me to the point where seeing an old man walk achingly slow across a throne room, basically in his final days of life, would be astoundingly impactful. All it takes is some strong commitment to theme and character and some damn good writing and acting. Nothing more and nothing less. (Meanwhile, I have absolutely zero interest in RoP. Not even a morbid curiosity. It exists and I couldn't care less.)

I agree that the HoD has better pilot. It's shows its characters for who they are and gives us glimps of conflicts. On the other hand, RoP feels more like just an introduction of everyone without some real meaning. About the part in the beginning that says the orc army is multiplying, that can be from Garadrields perspective. She is obsessed with finding Sauron, so she sees a threat in everything. For her, the enemy is just hidden somewhere, waiting. For everyone else, they've won. The end. But for the show as a whole? I enjoy RoP more. HoD keeps me at the edge of my seat all the time. There is actual steaks at play and lives are dispensebla, like GoT. RoP feels more simple. I watch it for enjoyment (and visual effects) without thinking too much. Just sit and enjoy. One is a story set in a somewhat realistic world with some dragons where no character is safe and the lines between good and evil are blured. There are no truly good or bad characters. Everyone has their own personal motives. The other is a true fantasy story. You have your heroes, you have your villains. Everything is served on a plater, so just sit down and enjoy. No need to think.

14:32 interesting. I mean, the cloud attacked the elves because Sauron summoned it, I thought. Also the elves wouldn't have let Galadriel go back home. Also that's the Undying Lands, jumping off the boat would be the only way not to get stuck there (once you're there, you can't leave). But yes, that's all explained in one of the movies, not this show.

I feel like I'm much more willing to forgive writing errors in RoP than in HotD. Honestly, Tolkien's work reads a lot like the show watches to (at least to me). It's a history about the fantastic elements. Tolkien was always OBSESSED with the world building, like, you can't get through a chapter without running into an elven ballad written out in its entirety. Now, Gollum's failed redemption arc, Legolas and Gimli's enemies-to-lovers story, and Frodo's corruption all exist in LotR as well, but it feels like the focus is really on the world and the lore. In contrast, the whole point of ASoIaF and that world has always been the characters, the dialogue, and the political intrigue. The story falls apart if the characters aren't dynamic and complex (or if they completely shift tone, like we saw in the later seasons of GoT). There's also really cool fantasy elements (Asshai, the dragon lords, the basilisks of the Summer Isles, etc.), but they're not central to the story in the same way Jon's honor or Cersei's psychopathy are. Anyway, I love both shows and I'm so excited for their next seasons.
