We dive deep into Rings of Power Episode 6: Udûn and discuss the references to Tolkien's lore from the books, but I also try to review the episode. We discuss some deeper Tolkien topics, like the orcs and mercy to orcs. Who might be Sauron or not and how Galadriel shined his episode.
If you want to dive even deeper into the episode, check my Analysis Stream of episode 6 tomorrow. Here is the link we are live in a moment: • Episodes 6 Analysis - ...

I think the show runners love to present stuff that defies reality and logic, putting it in our faces and daring us to find fault in it. I guess they compressed the map of Mordor along with the timelines. Tirharad should be 90-100 miles from Orodruin. A pyroclastic flow cannot travel that far. Also, no one should have survived what we saw at the end of the episode, but I am sure they all did. If any of them had sense they should have climbed the hill or mountain, but bad-ass Galadriel takes it on like a man.

Definitely the best episode so far, I wasn't disappointed by the revelation that the tunnels were dug to channel the water into the mountain to trigger an eruption - that part was a pleasant surprise to me - admittedly because Arondir laid a red herring for us when he suggested that the tunnels were used by the orcs to evade the elves stationed there and to navigate during the day. The writers get a lot of grief, so kudos to them on that subversion of expectations. I'm a bit worried though that Halbrand might in fact be Sauron now, since Adar claims that he killed Sauron. The writers made a point of describing Sauron as a Sorcerer in the first episode and keep bringing up his experiments with the Unseen World. I get the feeling that they will lean heavily into the fact that Sauron was known as the "Necromancer" too. Remember when Halbrand said that he found that pouch off of a dead man? What if he's being literal? What if Halbrand was dead and his child was sacrificed in a ritual similar to the one in the Shadow of Mordor game to bring back Sauron. Who knows maybe those cultists from the last episode might even be the same ones that performed the ritual with Halbrand and might be planning to use the Stranger's body as a new and powerful vessel for Sauron's spirit. Either way this episode definitely hooked me into the show! I'm watching HotD as well but each week I slowly find myself unironically looking forward to new RoP episodes more than new HotD episodes.

Yes sometimes things need time to really see how they fit into the context of everything. I have to admit though the trench now has a purpose, but I'm still not 100% happy with it, esp. after spending so much time on look at maps 😅 You have some good theories there! Yes I could imagine that Halbrand meant that kind of literally. I'm not 100% sure if he is Sauron, I hope not, but I can't exclude this theory from the realm of the possible. PS: I heard a few times now that some HotD people are in parts not happy with some details, while others enjoy it still a lot, esp. in context with some book knowledge?

@@ThePhilosophersGames That's fair, I'm not too bothered as we see the water from the river gets diverted by the tunnels and flows down into the magma chamber (which tends to be well below the actual cone of a volcano). I did some research into pyroclastic flows and discovered that they can be "cold" when there's a lot of steam present in an eruption so considering that the eruption was triggered by water (Phreatomagmatic Eruption) and the distance from the eruption then maybe that's how the cast manages to survive it.

How does Adar know that the old man knows how to activate the sword with blood? How two days of sail became just one day of sail? How did the Numenorians know where was the battle going on? It's a big land, shouldn't they go directly to the place where Halbrand is from? Why did Galadrial never thought of checking the weapon/artifact if she is so into finding everything about Sauron?.... Idk, there were so many little things that made the episode feel disjointed. Like it's a cut piece of different shows. At least I like the character Adar, he's much more human than Galadrial and the Hartfoots. He's trying to make a land for the orcs (whc is cool, but i hoped if it was done by Sauron himself for his own purpose)

For a brief moment I thought that just maybe the orcs would actually kill most of the villagers. Would have been a gritty turn for the story, and make more sense than the Deus Ex Machina cavalry saving the day.

- How does Adar know that the old man knows how to activate the sword with blood? He killed Rowan so he knows he is 100% devoted. he could have told him how the sword works or he saw his arm. Waldreg has the I used the black sword scars on his arm as Theo. - How two days of sail became just one day of sail? I assume due to one day happening offscreen on the boat. We don't know in what chronological relation to the village they started their journey to Middle-earth. - How did the Numenorians know where was the battle going on? Halbrand showed them Ostirith (the tower) on the map and suggested to go there. Tirharad is very close to the tower and there are not so many villages anyway. On top Halbrand said he knew orcs were there, so they were prepared to face those. - Why did Galadrial never thought of checking the weapon/artifact if she is so into finding everything about Sauron? I agree on that, but ofc the dialogue with Adar at the end brought her to her limits and so she was probably busy processing that. Maybe someone should have looked into it before the dialogue. I liked the episode, but I agree it was not perfect. Galadriel works much better in this episode and I think she made some progress as character. Adar is though a very interesting and cool character.

This episode is only the best because there wasn't as much dialogue as in the others, but still.. I don't buy it. The action scenes are great this time, believable; effects, color grading, locations are all wonderful. I can't accept the decisions made for the timeline and many others, they aren't believable, it totally breaks my immersion. As you said, the villagers teleporting from the tower behind the Orcs down into the valley, or the Numenoreans being immediately ready to ride for the village. For example Arondir destroying the whole tower and making it fall perfectly in the center of the square inside the fortress. Another is Halbrand intercepting Adar that is being followed by Galadrield from the opposite direction, can his horse teleport? Did they make a turn and we're going back to the village? Not talking about the water that perfectly follows the tunnels and has no other effect outside the trenches made by the Orcs. Everything happens just because, doesn't feel real. Not believable, beautiful, but no, don't like it. 5/10

So, when there's an evil magic McGuffin that is some kind of key that your enemy is desperately searching and battling for, and he escapes with it, and you dispatch your mightiest warriors to chase him down to recover it,.. well then obviously, you just pay that McGuffin no more mind. You don't even remove it from it's rags to make sure you actually have it. You don't have your wisest of elves and scourge of orc inspect it to discern it's meaning. @@ThePhilosophersGames We've only been shown two villages exactly. On was wiped out entirely and the inhabitants of the other one flew into the from the Elves abandoned watch tower to get a better stance for protection, only to give it up for a silly trap which only half-way works and is totally nonsensical. You can't bring a massive tower to fall by attaching some ropes on it and ignite them. But that's another topic. How many people live in the Southlands at all? We've only seen this group of approximately 100 people living in five houses from which half of them defected to Adar. The invention of Adar makes the entire show meaningful. Tolkien struggled with his treatment of the orcs and Adar answers that in a way which I think JRR would have to acknowledge appropriate. I want to see what would have happened with his Uruk Nation. In LOTR we do get glimpses of discord among the orcs and not everyone up for Sauron's game. And unlike Dwarves, the orcs were "given the divine breath" as elves from the start. Adar is brilliant and one of the great "what if" scenarios we used to play at as kids along with "what if Gandalf put on the Ring?".

I maybe change my mind after a rewatch, but from my first impression this was a big step in the wrong direction. Yes, it's an action-driven episode in which finally something's happened and the Numenorian and Southland story-lines have been connected. And the secret of the sword hilt has been revealed, yes. But how bad is this revelation? You need blood to unfold the blade so it fits into an unseen mechanism which breaks a dam in some unknown location to make water flow throw tunnels to ignite a volcanic eruption? Sorry, that's not how it works. A volcanic eruption needs to building up pressure like every explosion. An open tunnel system would only lead to vaporising the water and releasing the pressure backwards through the tunnels. We've already seen the exploding fumes getting out of those openings in the village. And if the pressure is to high, no more water would flow into the to the tunnels. But aside of the physics it doesn't make sense story-wise either. The sword hilt has been passed down for generations, we know that from Waldrek(spelling?). So this "key" is centuries old. Why had the mole orcs have to dig tunnels to make the mechanism working in the present time of the story? If it was prepared in ancient times the tunnels should already been there. I can't make heads or tails out of it.
@Fuhrerjehova
@Fuhrerjehova Год назад
I don't think you should mind the physics. I mean, how come Galadriel can see further than humans on the open sea? It's not lack of good eye sight that stops humans from seeing land. It's the curvature of Earth. So I guess the world of Tolkien is flat. But then the humans would have spotted land far earlier. Does this matter? No. It's not a physics show. However, I did feel that Indiana Jones-mechanism instead of dark magic was a bit boring.
@Spielkalb-von-Sparta
@Spielkalb-von-Sparta Год назад
@@Fuhrerjehova Please don't get me wrong, I can totally accept that Elves can see further or do other things a human being wouldn't be capable of in a fantasy world. If they'd have shown us that by some obscure means of blood magic I wouldn't been put off that much. But they didn't. Instead they've shown us water directing to a chamber of magma to make us believe that would cause the volcano to erupt. It simply doesn't work that way. Maybe I'm to "nitpicking" on such things, but can't help it. Here's another thing which bothers me: The arrows. Or their effect on people. You won't drop down if you're hit by an arrow unless it pierces your heart or your neck. PJ's films got that right with Boromir. But the way they handled here in the show makes me sick, it's always only doing the damage the script requires. There's no way an arrow with a rude tip of that size could have penetrated Bronwyn's shoulder blade. No way at all. And Galadriel on horseback making fancy moves to avoid a single arrow? Well, nice move but totally unnecessary because she's wearing a decent plate armour - which is very well designed. If her armour was as good as it looks she could've ignored the arrow and beheaded the Orc straight away. But no, for visuals she had to do those silly moves and behead the Orc from behind whilst riding in the opposite direction. It looks cool but is totally unrealistic and breaks my suspension of disbelieve.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/rings-of-power-mt-doom-volcano-water-real-1235230089/ You could make an argument for a "steam explosion" in the volcano I guess. The effect we see in Tirharad, is not do to teh volcano, but due to a lot of water flowing through those tiny tunnels below and the villagers dig those holes for unknown reasons (as trap?) so I assume that is where the water pressured up to the surface. I agree though that simply showing some dark sorcery to activate Mount Doom would have been better 😅
@Spielkalb-von-Sparta
@Spielkalb-von-Sparta Год назад
@@ThePhilosophersGames Reading that article _Jeffrey Karson, professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University, who specializes in volcanic activity and has written about the role of water in eruptions_ didn't watch the show but only reacted to what he's been told about it. _If a river poured into a land-based volcano like Mount Doom, mixed with the magma and there wasn’t a way for the resulting steam to exit (like, say, if the incoming water was blocking the hole the Orcs had dug), there could indeed be an explosion._ *and there wasn’t a way for the resulting steam to exit* - This is the point. In the show we see clearly daylight shining onto the waterfall. So there has to be an opening to release the pressure of the steam.

Again, the capture of Adar should have happened in the 3rd or 4th episode. Then we could've focused on the other characters for a bit,, followed that human Adar follower now and then, and then ended up in the same place but with Adar interrogation interspersed throughout. I think he's the most interesting character. They may have wanted to keep him mysterious, but I feel he's been underused thus far. Plus, a longer interrogation would have lent itself to letting us understand Galadriel's insane, genocidal rant. He could have worn down her patience after the heroes realized that they didn't have the hilt. I dunno. I feel like there was quite a bit of potential, but it's been a slog.

I'm slightly under the impression the writers took a kitchen sieve as a role model for their plot. It doesn't work without a lot of holes. Adar had his moments though I was able to appreciate. But even the best actors or character moments can't save badly written story-lines at the end of the day.

Yes it's often many small details that add up. With Halbrand you can mabe make an argument, that Míriel as queen of the mighty Númenóreans is there to legitimate the claim of Halbrand. With helping the Southlanders she also has an argument for her. The sudden sunrise bothered me as well 😅
@Spielkalb-von-Sparta

@@ThePhilosophersGames With saving the villagers from distinction they are in Miriel's depth, yes. But why did they accept her endorsement to a random guy so quickly and willingly? Only because he was wearing this pouch on his belt? - The cinematography suggests it. That seems a little slim to me, Aragorn had to _prove_ he was the rightful king, not only by his heritage but also in his deeds. Halbrand's promotion to being a king over 50 villagers living in five huts seemed to be a little rushed. In the previous five episodes they've put a lot of mystery boxes into our faces. I gave them the benefit of the doubt they'd had good solutions in their concept to resolve them. But now that they've shown us the first solutions I'm really disappointed.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
@@Spielkalb-von-Sparta Yes the scene overall is a bit underdeveloped. I guess because it's not relevant. Now with Mordor becoming like the Mordor we know, the question is: do they need a king now? or do they go somewhere else? Maybe the white mountains? 🤔 Maybe there is some fancy prophecy of the true king who appears having this symbol and all aligns well. They would have the chance of telling that later. But as you say we as audience should not always need to fill the gaps ourselves. All I can hint at is, that having Míriel (and Galadriel) there +those savig the lives of the villagers adds a bit of more weight to his claim, plus him having the talisman.

what i really really start to hate are all those defenders of the show giving you this two arguments all over again: they telling us to worship all the little easter eggs the show does right, while ordering us to ignore all the lore breaking? what is it now? stay to the canon or not? and also they are saying "But the showrunners couldn't show us this or that, becasue they do not have the rights for it. You blow it in context of my channel a bit out of proportion. I don't want people to do anything (maybe snark a bit less). I appreciate the Easter eggs, because so far in many episodes besides Elrond/Durin/Disa/Dwarves there was not much to appreciate (besides visuals), it also kind of shows that some people who work on the show know the books, which some people claim the they do not. Tolkien is further a lot about details and so I look for them. I criticise the things they get wrong, but I will also praise the details they get right. How you at the end rate the show, is a purely individual thing. The rights situation: It's noticeable, when Arondir says: "it is believed that one of the Valar watches over growing things" and not says Yavanna, that this is probably due to not having the rights to say the name Yavanna. That is just part of the analysis. It seems there are restrictions and without those the show could be more precise and feel more as part of Tolkien's world imo. They does not make up for stupid writing decisions. What I as creator do is trying to explain those details to my audience, because some people watching are not aware or did not notice. What you do with this information is ofc your business. But I'm not telling to ignore bad writing decisions. But I also try to not be overly nit-picky with things I discussed already several times. As said so far it's overall not a good Tolkien adaption (with some exceptions).

Perhaps it could have been something neat for extended versions of each episode for collectors and enthusiasts, where we could have an extra hour each episode, and I think actors, directors, and the whole production team would gain a smooth refined experience arc if that was the case. But it all comes down to production time, cost, and written material - which is fragmented, rare, and requires incredible skill to create for anyone but an incarnation of J.R.R. Tolkien in his prime. An Artificial Intelligence supported database system and a whole team of dedicated Tolkien enthusiastic professors could do it, perhaps. Then it would always be a question of that compared to new and other things. But I do find the entire prospect of an enriched, embellished, and seamless lore friendly continuation of the works of fundamental fantasy and fiction writers quite interesting for the future. I dare not foresee what will come to pass considering the first age of J.R.R. Tolkiens fantastical and magical work - but I will be open for any such experience.

Great analysis, thank you. This episode was a noticeable improvement compared to the previous ones. Finally some meaningful developments happening, some good plot advance, and better dialog and pace. I liked the Galadriel scenes and dialogs, and I found the riding acrobatics much more credible and impressive than her showing off action scenes in other episodes. The laziness and incoherence with size and time annoy me greatly because it's just carelessness and lack of respect to the viewer. The contracting and expanding of numbers of villagers is ridiculous. The hundreds of riders and horses that were supposedly in 3 small ships is just silly. These things just put me off.

Thank you, finally a fair review. Its good to see that at least some youtubers are not entering this negative spiral of critizicing for the sake of critizicing. There are an overwhelming amount of youtube channels which claim that especially episode 6 is utter garbage. Its ridiculous. I have to say in my opinion the show has room for much improvment and naturally struggles with lore difficulties but that doesn't legitimize the whole Rings of power bashing movement. Its childish and plain stupid. Thank you for your channel. Your channel is getting more and more a staple before going to bed every evening. There is no tolkien youtube channel with such a quality. Your in depth videos of the characters of middle earth are throwing me (38 years old) back into my childhood fascination with the work of Tolkien.

@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
Sorry for the late answer and thank you ^^ Yes The negativity is really kind of extreme. I try to follow a very easy principle: when i don't like something I criticise it. If I like something I praise it. And I always try to say something positive and something critical in my reviews. The show is not perfect, but some people over do it a little bit and there are channels who make quite a bit of money surfing the wave of negativity. People sometimes feel so extreme. If one speaks about the negativity, some people interpret it as: "oh no they don't want us to criticise the show." But that is not what I mean with negativity. It's more this one directional spiral of "snark" that gets annoying. It's totally fine to express what they dislike, but it's not like there is nothing good in the show. The problem is often, that bad and good things even out each other and we land somewhere in the middle. And depending on your preferences and how you weight things you are either enjoy it a bit more or not. I give a lot of weight to the Galadriel Adar dialogue in episode 6, so I'm far more positive towards it. And i expressed this. But ofc I also criticised their bad "use" of time, etc. In comparison to a lot of other media reception, RoP sticks out noticeably. Like it's rare that people jump so much on positive comments. I also deleted a bunch of comments, simply because people have expressed their opinion 500 times on this channel already and there is not reason to jump on every positive comment and spin the negativity spiral again. If the poster would have written: "show is just ok" or "show is bad", people would not have answered to your comment. That is a problem in my comment section. It feels like people "gang" upon certain opinions. That is why I'm especially sorry for answering so late, but I'm really behind in answering comments.

I really enjoyed your review as always especially because you finally found some good words for Galadriel :D (i personally liked her all along as i liked the whole show so far because i've never expected them to stick to the lore very closely. with only the appendices and some references in the LotR for the second age there is not so much background material for a at least 5-seasons-lasting show. Therefore maybe I am not so critical as so many others seem to be and I just enjoy the ride) and though it might have been predictable i also liked the sword plot. On the other hand I would not support a Galdriel-Halbrand-Romance. In episode 6 I really liked her. She fitted well, was in her element, the scene with Adar was really strong and her character made sense. It also helps when the plot is driven by the characters and the characters by the plot. haha yes Halbrand can have a crush on Galadriel, but Galadriel should not have one on him. She should be married as well and already have a daughter according to the books 😅

@chook keep in mind that the scene of her smiling was in real time like 0.5 seconds long while riding on a horse quiet fast and they stretched it to 8 seconds in this slowmo. Underwhelming, is definitely the word. Quite strange to say considering the spectacular events on display, which are just shot through with a lot of mediocre story beats and disappointing payoffs. I was incredibly let down by the resolution to the black sword question, a real waste of an intriguing artifact. I like the series generally but so far it's been a patchwork of brilliant moments, with flashes of beautiful dialogue, connected by contrivances and madness-inducing time skips. I find you sometimes need to watch through a couple of times to properly enjoy them, unfortunately; they're often a bit too inconsistent (and confusing) to be wholly satisfying viewing on their own.

And further the development should have been smoother to a certain point.

They’ve really botched the show a great deal, mainly with their wokeism, but also flawed writing and failing to follow the lore. Tolkien was a genius, so straying from his plot line is always going to be a mistake. Perhaps they can salvage it a little, though I think in general most fans of Tolkien will consider it heresy and regret watching it. Halbrand as Sauron makes sense to me, though I think they could have been more subtle about the possibility. Answers the question, how did Sauron manage to gift the rings to the elves, dwarves and humans. He played the part well enough that they trusted him in his guise. I think we’ll eventually see Halbrand forge the rings of power in Mount Doom, in secret, then somehow manage to gift them all to the various peoples. Likely not in this first season. Halbrand as the Witch King makes little sense to me. That would be one of the human lords that Sauron gifts a ring to. Who else would be the master smith Sauron able to craft the rings? Certainly not the Stranger, who if not an out of Era Gandalf makes absolutely no sense being in the story at this point. The Eminem character? Perhaps, and then Halbrand as one of the human lords receiving a ring fits in. So far the writing has been so contrived anything is possible. Rather than Galadriel being portrayed as a male hero with alpha male traits, I think the story would have been better swapping her with any of the elves back in the elfin stronghold. Elrond and Gil Galad were bad asses in Tolkien lore. Galadriel was as well, but in a much different manner. How they will explain her surviving the volcano eruption about to obliterate everyone and everything will undoubtedly ruin the next episode. How will any of those characters survive what is basically a Pompei incident that transforms the south lands into foul smelling Mordor? Will they fly away on dragons? Climb to a high spot so the lava surrounds them, ala Frodo and Samwise? Will the eagles fly in the save them? Obviously something saves them, and that means more characters than just Galadriel will have thick plot armor. Maybe Alondir’s time will come opening up a relationship between Halbrand and Bronwin, meaning Halbrand is not Sauron but rather one of human lords to receive a ring. But why did they portray him being a master Smith if that’s the case? Frustrating.

nani? PS: it just makes no sense to repeat myself every week: lore has still tons of problems, every episode has several nonsensical elements, but imo the episodes get a bit better each time and this time we saw something like a plot that might have to do witgh what they actually want to tell us story wise. I guess my expectations are also not really high or i lowered them. But we have less pacing issues in the last few episodes, some solid dialogue, Galadriel worked better in this episode as character and made maybe some progress, it was pretty focused on one plot line. Two arcs just came together. To really reach like good to very good territory, they have to stop the nonsense though. The black sword thing was really the biggest let down. How lame was that?
