Hi Chris. I love your optimism albeit I cannot share it. In order to get these showrunners on the right pass to the real Tolkien, they would have to first see and acknowledge their failures. But as long as everyone not liking the dhow is evil, as they said in their last interview, the only hope I have it getting cancelled. I am quiet happy with my books and your and others videos . I really fellt dirty after yesterdays episode, especially the Celeborn news and how she conveyed it. Btw. Galadriel did not participate in the Dagor Bragolach where two of her brothers died. She was safe and sound with Celeborn her beloved, studied magic with Melian and imagined her own realm she would rule one day. As far as I know she did not participate in any of the big battles against Morgoth in the first age.

Just a minor point about the star formations: They're not only inspired by our night sky, they are supposed to be the very same stars we can see above us at night. The Legendarium takes place in an imagined past of our world, and the "Sickle" is directly mentioned to be another name for what we know as the Big Dipper, in Bree in Book I.
@ThePhilosophersGames

I know, but one has to keep in mind that Arda is the mythological version of our world and there are "inaccuracies" and differences, so star constellations could be also a bit off compared to hour world or based on old knowledge instead of state of the art astronomical insights. Further there exist more star constellations than Tolkien describes in his books and though they might be considered present at the skies of Arda as well, there is no mythological context of them in Arda. That is why I phrased it as "inspired", but it's probably not ideally phrased.

I have to mention something about the mithril and the leaf scene that I think you'll find interesting. When the mithril interacts with the leaf there's a subtle sound, it sounds like whispering. I don't see chances for improvement. Lazy/Bad writing, trying to copy PJ films in so many places, uninteresting characters, lack of logic (for example to wake a volcano using water 🤬 - it is possible but not that was and only a complete idiot could belive in that), just a boring show and I won't mention breaking or showing 🖕 to the lore. They have started shooting the 2nd season few days ago and that means they won't do adjustments or improvements. I don't see any chance to save the show. I'm done after this season ends. The worst thing is that people who don't know Tolkien will give it the benefit of the doubt and will assume it's a real Tolkien adaptation... The show is boring, just bad, so a lot of people will say Tolkien is overrated and what was all that huge buzz about 🤬
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
It will also make people check the books, which is good. Sure it might also give people some wrong impressions, the PJ films did this as well. Also PJ copied 1:1 quite a few scenes from Ralf Bakshi's adaption as well. So it goes full circle when RoP now copies some of PJ's stuff. I think the copying was not overboard so far, only episode 6 was a bit excessive.
@wbfwbl8434
@wbfwbl8434 Год назад
@@ThePhilosophersGames In my opinion PJ copying RB was not a huge problem because it was the same story and it was done very well. With the RofP we have a different story so for me it's anoying. This show could have had it's unique flavor but it's a mess almost every way. There are a few thing which I like but even those are screwed by lack of logic or lore breaking. Also I have a feeling the creators are putting so much stuff in GofThrones style it will colapse under it's own weight which was also the problem for season 7-8 of GofT

What is in the lore about humans using magic? I thought that magic was exclusive to Ainur and Elves (with Elves being more limited). These cultists are human apparently but use the kind of magic I'd expect to be exclusive to beings like the Istari. If humans can use the kind of magic they are doing in RoP then why aren't their court wizards in Numenor and later Gondor?
@charlescaine6022
@charlescaine6022 Год назад
The Witch King could use magic before becoming a Ring Wraith.
@SNWWRNNG
@SNWWRNNG Год назад
There's no "magic system" in Tolkien's world - it's not like an RPG where it's clearly defined that only certain races can use clearly defined spells. We see in LotR that Galadriel is confused about how Sam uses "magic" for both what Elves do and what Sauron does - to her those are different things. Sauron did teach some "sorcery" to Men, like the Witch-king or the Mouth of Sauron. But that's different from the abilities the Druedain or Dunedain have that we would consider supernatural as well, and from what the wizards do. Tolkien was a bit unhappy with the word choice of wizard for the Istari later, because it makes us think of them as magic users primarily even though Tolkien chose the word for its etymological connection to "wisdom".
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
Magic is a very soft term in Tolkien's world. Ofc Ainur and Elves are often connected to magic, though Galadriel e.g. sees it not as "magic". But as other pointed out there are hints that men could use "magic" as well. The Nazgûl before the transformed: "Men proved easier to ensnare. Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing. They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them. They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron." So depending how you read this: the Rings allowed them to become sorcerers (or they were already sorcerers). Tolkien also mentions in a letter that the Blue Wizards might have started cults (connected to magic): "I think they went as emissaries to distant regions, East and South, far out of Numenorean range: missionaries to enemy-occupied lands, as it were. What success they had I do not know; but I fear that they failed, as Saruman did, though doubtless in different ways; and I suspect they were founders or beginners of secret cults and 'magic' traditions that outlasted the fall of Sauron." This does not state Men were involved in those cults, but it's possible. if thsi is canon or not is hard to say, but at least Tolkien thought that it was possible inside his world. Also we have the idea of a "necromancer" in Mirkwood, who might have been human for the assumptions of the White Council to make sense. Ofc the term necromancer is a relic of very old writings of Tolkien. However it becomes clear that men could use " magic". Esp. those serving a Dark Lord. beyond that we also have men who made prophecies. Malbeth the Seer, Huor, etc

I feel that this episode was far better than ep6: we had some interesting character development with Durin and Galadriel. Possibly the reveal that the stranger is probably a Istari. My bet is that he’s Alatar, the blue wizard sent by Orome, Valar of Hunting and Forests. It would be quite fitting. I even understood Elendil’s motivation to resent Galadriel since he thinks his son is lost. Besides having to suspend our disbelieve about the consequences of the volcanic eruption and Halbrand having to ride a horse to who knows where, everything else was pretty consistent

I really dislike how the show clings to mysteries that it refuses to reveal even after dedicating an episode to revealing more. This is LOST all over again. LOST was a huge let down with so many awful and meaningless episodes. We know nothing about Sauron. Maybe you know something but the average person knows nothing. They could reveal Sauron episode one and let us learn about him his motivations and powers and we would be all the better for it. Thanks for your balanced and constructive criticism for this show Chris. Your channel has made my experience with this show enjoyable. Honestly the entire series has been a mixed bag. My biggest criticism so far is the story writing. It looks like the writers take many shortcuts and keep missing good opportunities to make an epic moment. I also feel there are too many writers for each episode who also appear to be going in different directions. There is no strong unison among the writers in this show which clearly explains why it is a mix bag. Pacing is another problem but it seems that they've acknowledged this. I don't find this show as trash as some may see but it's also not epic. I'm happy to see some character development in the Harfoots and Galadriel. Anyways, I really hope they take this criticism to heart and make a better show for season 2.

The writing is so bad, it seems to me they hold the audience in contempt. Every plot point is moved forward via forced contrivance, there is no internal scale of time or distance, there are no continuities of any in-story 'repercussion' points, and the dialogue is terrible. Lore went out the window a long time ago. This is all from show runners who profess how much they love and respect the lore. Sigh. It's a bad show. I'm angry because there was so much potential.

From the most recent Hollywood Reporter interview. When replying to the fan question: “Galadriel acts too masculine and she never went to Númenor” McKay: Also, the name “Galadriel” is loosely translated in Elvish as a maiden with a crown of golden hair. The reason she had a crown of golden hair is because when she would fight and do all sorts of sparring with other elves … she would braid her hair and put it up on top of her head [to stay out of the way]. So in the etymology is the idea that Galadriel is a warrior. Read that answer again. I'm embarrassed for all the content creators who vouched for the showrunners 'lore' credentials.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
I think the writing is really the biggest problem in many parts. I wouldn't say it's always bad though. There were some good dialogues and scenes, but for every good section there is a bad one to counter it. They need to get more consistent. It would also help if the lore changes made somewhat sense. The Beforedor/Mordor transition imo worked for the most part, but Gil-galad changes still make no sense.
@filipaantoniabaratadearauj1749
@@themadpizzler6081 I don't think Galadriel feels masculine and I'd bet the person asking that thinks the original G is some delicate flower and not a woman who fantasised about absolute power. But, contrary to Elrond, she doesn't feel like Galadriel.

I think everyone is forgetting how Celebrimbor was acting suspicious in the first episode and how he needed his forge done so quickly. I think Annatar is already at work there and we are going to learn that next week? Maybe? Also, I'm wondering if Celeborn is taking Glorfindel's place as the one that died fighting a Balrog and is to be brought back... However in that original story both Glorfindel and the Balrog died, so if that is also Durin's Bane that means only Celeborn died during their battle. Not sure how I feel about this, but I can see how it might work and tie Galadriel/Celeborn storyline to Mithril.

Thank you ^^ Yes it was also very enjoyable streaming and discussing the show with others. So I can relate to that. Glad you like my ramblings ^^ (and that is a huge compliment for me). If Halbrand is Sauron, it might really be that Adar betrayed him and he is angry at him. Otherwise it's strange that Adar does not remember him. Halbrand must have a reason why he swore not to return. And he said he did horrible things. Also he knows Adar and wanted to kill him. I guess a classic strong motif is like Adar killing Halbrand's family (wife, children, father mother, brother, sister). It can't be too big, else Adar would remember him though. Like if Halbrand had to sacrifice someone for what ever strange reason. In addition it seems Adar is not really into doing classic dark Sauron things. He seems to just care for his "children" and wants to make Mordor their home by blocking the sun with ashes. Sure he makes Waldreg kill Rowan, but I think that was for testing loyalty and he would not forget Waldreg I think. So that makes everything very suspicious.

Great summary and analysis! Thank you! I enjoyed this episode a lot because I thought there were some Tolkienien themes that were explored such as the smaller character moments. It’s sad to see how a beautiful, pastoral land like the Southlands turned into the hellscape of Mordor. The people get displaced and lose their homes, which is devastating. Hence, I really liked the conversation between Galadriel and Theo when he asks how he can let go of his guilt and Galadriel says to trust in the designs of powers beyond this world. I found this especially moving because I interpreted this as Galadriel’s faith and trust in Eru. Theo’s sentence about him losing his home and asking where is the design in that was also heartbreaking. Almost brought tears to my eyes. Also, Miriel losing her eyesight was sad. Overall, I really liked this episode because it showed the repercussions of Ep6, and the tenacity of the people to carry on and fight. There were some great takeaway messages in this episode.

I liked this episode. I give it a 5 out of 10. That's not good, but it's better than the episode's so far. This is a very poorly written show. The beginning should state that it's very loosely based on the works of J.R.R Tolkien. I'm very glad that he and his son are not around to see what they did to his work. Maybe season two they can turn it around.

I enjoyed the episode quite a bit, a pleasant surprise after finding the last one pretty disappointing. Although, I laughed out loud at the Celeborn reveal, maybe just a hint of schadenfruede for the writers on the book-fan reaction. It seems they can't help themselves putting something controversial into each episode. Don't personally mind because Celeborn plays such a small role in everything but it's a weak (and late) explanation and does bring us a step closer to a possible Galadriel-Halbrand tryst which I categorically do not want. Regarding the Stranger, I thought Radagast during the episode. I think it's more likely they revise or add to his origin than Gandalf's - if anything would raise complaints from the Tolkien estate that would, surely. Later, I remembered the obscure reference to Yavanna in the previous episode and it seemed even more likely the Stranger is an envoy of hers, perhaps for reasons unrelated to the Istari? The Harfoots were pretty great this episode, and the poor Stranger just can't catch a break. It seems pretty unlikely he has anything truly evil about him now but the cultists knew where he was going to be and clearly have plans for him, interesting. I think that's the last we'll see of the Balrog. We've watched everything they showed in the trailers now and I can't see them squeeze it into the final episode. Seems they've just left it there to remind us of the perils of the deep dark places. If they do begin mining again in future, I guess we'll be on the edge of our seats waiting for something dreadful to happen, which is kind of cool I have to admit.

It's becoming more and more clear that the stranger is Gandalf. He's the only wizard dealing with Hobbits. In the Fellowship he says "about their origins, at any rate, I know more than the hobbits do themselves." He wears grey, he's a wizard, he and the hobbits helping each other out. This is where he learns how brave and overlooked hobbits are.

@@mattexploring1184 You may absolutely be right. I hope not, because Gandalf's arrival in the Third Age is quite significant but at least, I'm pretty invested in the Stranger's story for now. I've my own theory for how he might develop, going forward.

I didn't hate episode 7, tjough there still were many tjings that bothered me, yet therevat last was notjing i really hated this time, but sadly also nothing i really loved. I felt with the poor halflings when the witches burned their few belongings... pretty sure now they are demonic beings, Ainur of some sort, not humans. I really have turned into a Bridie Sisson fanboy, she has something. That Celeborn mention however was... weird, to say the least. Two scenes were too much of a rip off of scenes from the Fellowship, which i also disliked. The Balrog scene had be troubled...

It was only Nori's fault that everything got burned and they hopefully all starve to death now. And for what? For nothing. Before, Nori got always critizised and the older dumpling-halfling-whatever women wanted her and her family to be actively left behind and now, after the shit really hit the fan, suddenly the same women act all understanding and supporting all over sudden in such a massively cheesy way ? That's my comment to that whole mess: 🤮

RoP is just a bait to catch costumers of Prime. In my opinion it is obvious. Stop discussing why there is clearly no love to the lore or passion making it. A lot of people had an account but were not paying for it. They hoped that the people are taking Prime and get used to the „advantages“ or forget about their abonnement…

Hi Chris, sorry, that i have to down vote your review, because in my opinion you are way to forgivable for the show runners... they constanty not only deviate from lore (i have made my peace with that ) but they are contradicting themselves in so many ways time and time again. The editing still is awefull, the dialoges stolen from PJ's LotR or meaningless gibberish. I understand that you concentrate on the bits of the show, that do Tolkien respect in a way, but for me it just isn't enough. in the middle of the episode, Sardoc says, that they have enough fruits gathered, so they could take it tho the market... sure, the isolationistic sociopaths now trading? Galadriel starts the episode in the village of not even 20 buildings with Theo and we can see and hear other people in the background, but in the next scene they are alone on their own ... Disa's play for power for her and Durin comes completly out of nowhere... as i said, you concentrate on the bits, that work, but mostly gloss over all the stuff that simply doesn't and that is just not my kind of review... just as only pointing out the negative things without acknowledging the good ones. Elendil for example is for the most part the best thing of this episode... well if only he could have bothered to search for Isildurs body... also he seems to have forgotten what he taught Isildur about horses last episode, that Berek has a bond with him. With how Berek is behaving it is clear, that there is something off with Isildur, but Elendil ignores it. I still like your lore content, as there is so much to learn from you about Tolkiens world... could the show improve? sure it could... the only way is up from where it is now imo, but alone my hopes are very very low. When i see that show runners call critics patently evil for pointing out all the thins that do not work or simply are bad, we have a problem.

Fair enough, but quality of a video does not equal sharing your opinion. Is the video so bad that it does deserve a dislike? Or is it just because your opinion differs from mine? Can't agree that the editing is bad though. I don't remember Sadoc talking about a market. do you round about know where that was in the episode? They talk about "Frozen Fish", which is a place they migrate to I would assume. Yes the splitting up was a bit strange. But I guess you can argue that the fog made things difficult That Durin will be King one time and them disagreeing with King Durin was established before. Keep in mind that I could have said more about the episode, but I can't include everything. As said in the video: a few things I have criticised a lot in the past already. And it's present her again

@@ThePhilosophersGames yes, i let my own opinion and in what amount your points sway itflow into the thumps up or down decision. You even said in your review that the good points only slighty outweights the bad ones, but still you give it a better than average rating, what in itself is one of the points, that made me dislike this post. Don't get me wrong, i really appreciate your content and i am and will stay still a subscriber, but when i see an inconsistency like that, thats what i do, but i am sure i will like most of your content as usual in the future, becasue i really enjoy it. Thats what is by far the most positive of this show... i am heads deep in Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales again, as i was 20 years ago the last time, and channels as yours help a lot to process it. The time mark is 44 minutes 45 seconds in, when Sardoc said his market line. I had to enable subtitle to verify what i first only thought was a trick of my mind. cya in the next stream

I quite like this episode. The starting scene was bad, though, they wanted to go for drama but totally failed by letting the main characters survive what killed everybody else, didn't even try to come up with some kind of explanation. I liked the Galadriel and Theo scene, she really improved a lot though that leads to the question if they really needed all the strange story for her to allow for that improvement or if that could have been done better. It's funny that with a similar scene with Halbrand last episode everybody talked about romance. The Halbrand injury is as weird as Chris says, needs urgent Elves' medicine but then can walk and mount the horse and ride a long way. It's either very lazy writing or the guy is not human ;-) My not so serious prediction: they ride to Eregion and when they arrive they are greeted by Celebrimbor who welcomes Anatar back which leaves Galadriel totally confused. The Harfoots where great, ignoring the precision long range missile hit. For me it's more and more clear that the stranger is really Gandalf. I just started re-reading the Fellowship and concerning hobbits there's a lot in there that can fit with the Harfoots story. When Gandalf talks to Frodo about Smeagol, he says that he knows more about the origin of the hobbits than they do themselves. So while it's not in Tolkiens writing there's also nothing in it that says Gandalf wasn't in middle earth in the second age. I really liked the Elrond and Durin part, except the strange scene between Durin and his wife where both appeared power hungry and greedy. The story played pretty well with king Durin being careful and rightly so since there's a Balrog and prince Durin wanting to help a friend. Both are right and both are wrong at the same time, there are no good and easy choices. I know there were multiple writers for the script and I assume that the different story lines had different authors and were then combined. This would explain why some are really great and some are really bad writing.

I don't think there's any feelings of animosity for the audience as many people might feel. I think there's just an issue with pacing. I think the inexperience of the showrunners have contributed to the problem. Ultimately, at the end of each episode, I ask myself "where are we now compared to where we were at the start?". That's something that I do reflexively, but I only notice this when there is a pacing issue. I think I genuinely expected this episode to have far higher stakes. However, after another hour of story, very little has progressed. The queen is blind, but also exiting for now. They set up galadriel potentially reuniting with her husband, and they have the harfoots finally decide to accept the stranger (suddenly). Oh, and the shockingly the exactly-the-same-looking balrog wakes up from a leaf. Everything else was spinning wheels. Durin already disagreed with his father. Elrond needed mithril but its availability was in doubt. In my view, the only things to actually happen in the entire series are Numenor agreeing to help, the stranger and his pursuers encounter the harfoots, and Mt doom erupts. That's it. There are other decisions characters made, but none of those decisions have affected their standpoint. That's not much for 7 hours.

Rousing speech time, talking about their character, and how they stick together, but wait didnt you just say you left people behind all the time? @@ThePhilosophersGames I think it's a matter of personal values. For me, a mediocre adaptation something great gets negative credit, while I think for others it's the opposite. My love for something is a burden on whatever tries to adapt it, rather than a positive. Which perhaps isn't fair, but just okay doesn't cut it for me, but that's just my subjective opinion.
