I rate both Robbie Fowler & Michael Owen some of the coldest finishers/goalscorers ever. Fowler needs a whole segment himself he was unreal. Owen's goal against Argentina is etched in my memory, you have to be a special player to have memorable moments like that. Rapid/explosive, sharp on the turn & a deadly cool finisher, he made it look so easy to score.

I’m a Newcastle fan and remember the hat trick he scored against us and I remember thinking what a player. He made our defence look silly. He was unstoppable in his prime 👍 I was a fan of him when he became a poacher as well, I thought he didn’t get the credit for the season he was at Madrid. He was a sub at Madrid but still scored 16 goals for them that season. He should of started at Madrid as Raul wasn’t at his best that season. Even when he was at Newcastle he had a great start and kept scoring but unfortunately got injured and wasn’t the same but I always rated Owen 👍
@asnark7115
@asnark7115 7 месяцев назад
I remember thinking that the worst joke of all time in the sport was Raul starting ahead of Owen. No lies, I could have stopped Raul 1v1 99/100 times. Raul was never anything but a poacher and target player. Owen could beat a squad of elite pros between him and goal with the same chances that a Messi or Maradona had, maybe with better chances.

He had the potential to be right up there with R9. He was a phenomenon. Not just frighteningly quick, his positioning was top notch, his finishing was unreal and even his heading was really good relative to his height. It’s a shame how his career turned out after Real. He wasn’t all that bad there either.

Spot on about his positioning and his heading - no one ever really mentions that Owen was a pretty good header of the ball. But the potential to be as good as R9? Not quite. Owen was exceptional and in his peak had similar speed to R9, but R9 was a different beast from a technical pov which Owen probably would never had reached. There were certain similarities but they were quite different stylistically. From a physical pov was Michael would often wriggle away from defender challenges, then no one could catch him, where as R9 could just run through defenders because he was 6ft, strong as an Ox and then no one could catch him. R9 dribbling ability was well ahead of Owen's, if R9 couldn't use his raw power and pace he would use faints, stepovers and unbelievable close control to beat defenders, then use his speed to get clear of them where as Michael could dribble at speed, often just beating defenders because he would run with the ball into space so quickly but it wasn't necessarily his dribbling and close control that got him past players in small areas, but rather slowing them down, bursting past them or changing direction which he did fantastically. Also from a finishing pov Owen wasn't as good with his weaker foot as R9 was. But both 2 of the scariest players to watch in their prime.

So pleased you say he doesn’t get tbe respect. 💯correct. And mentioning his timing to make tbe run. And the fact he could score a dink, chip, volley, every kind of finish. He had it all. He was also great at dribbling with tbe ball. But no one ever mentioned that. His football brain about when to make tbe run and which run to make was phenomenal. So so pleased you’ve spoken so honestly about his ability. I think many don’t just because of shearer and his influence and wanting to stay on shearers right side. Which speaks volumes about shearer imo (lance armstrong type) Well done Rio

Growing up as a Liverpool fan i subscribed to the club magazine. It regularly mentioned the youth teams. Without fail it would it would feature some ridiculous scoring feats, like 11 goals in 5 FA youth cup games by some young striker. One week it was about Liverpool players who made England Schoolboys. England played Brazil and won 4-0. Young MIchael Owen scored all four.

I used to folllow Liverpool as a kid, and i remember i used get the official club magazine and when i checked the reserve or youth team results, all you would see is, Owen Goal. I remember watching him in that England school boy match too. He must have made Collymore and Fowler a little uneasy at the time. It was no surprise when he scored on his debut. I went on the Anfield tour before Owens debut, and i actually saw him and Tony Warner in the car park. I remember Owen looking supremely confident wearing some shades. Agree with everything Rio said here, mad player from 1998-2002. He was sent off against Utd for taking out Ronny Johnsen though, not Schmeichel.

3 years he was insane, but then came the injuries, the press, everyone dragging him as they do. MO because shot physically and mentally, he could have been a great in the game never mind premier league

Rio giving Owen his props respect

All very true and he was so respectful off the pitch too. He was a role model to kids and other professionals. Now when you talk of Ballon D’or …. Worthy winner. I can think of two other Englishmen who also won it. It was formally known as European player of the year. The first is Tony Woodcock when he left Notts Forest and went to I think Bayern Munich. The other was my hero, Kevin Keegan who also played in Germany for SV Hamburg. Now everything said about Owen is correct, Kevin Keegan was ahead of his time. The pitches weren’t as good as they are today, boots etc, training and the like. Keegan worked so hard technically. So when you’ve watched Owen, go and watch Keegan as he won the award two years running. Well presented Rio 👍

Needs to be recognised. Owen in his prime was one of the best players in the world. He had USPs (jet-heeled, clinical, could do it against any team on any stage) an incredibly strong mentality. Also, at a time when forwards were not as protected as they are now. Don't judge him by the end of his career or his boring studio presence. 🙏

First time I saw Owen play was in the FA Youth Cup Final at Upton Park against you Rio. He was the difference between the two teams.

There was a time when he was the best striker in the premier league. That 2000-01 season. Them two goals against arsenal in the FA cup final.

The best young player I have seen for the first 5-7 years of he's career unbelievable and sadly for some reason now underated, injuries done him in the end, watch his goals in those years, unreal and now Jude Bellingham comes along !!
