He comes across as an incredibly dry sort of man. Not dislikable by any means, but he seems to have a, ''let's get the graphs out'' type of personality that's hard *to* like. Perfect for no-strings-attached clubs and fans like Real Madrid. Liverpool as an entity is an emotional club; behaviour considered a sleight resonates particularly deeply. His ultimate undoing with Liverpool fans will always be joining the mancs. Graph away, Michael. That's unforgivable.
As an ex Sports journo I talked with colleagues and God did I hear some stories about Michael Owen (some never printed) he's ruthless, cold amd tbh not very bright, that goes back decades. The ruthless was quite evident in his choice of club he went to, Real Madrid after Lpool assured him.of a rebuild, Newcastle because according to him on his way back to Liverpool apparently (Ncastle bumped up the price) but having a helicopter to fly him back and forwards in his tenure there wasn't about money and then the ultimate kick in the cojones joining United, he's the type of guy you wouldn't trust with the last life jacket and is a pure opportunist selfish individual, that's why Liverpool can't stomach the guy, oh and his analysis of football is tedious and that Dubai ad...Jesus christ, I had Ted Maul from Brass Eye in my head 'Coswick, from the moon satellite it's a small dot, but on the ground it's a huge mess like Dante meets Bosch in a crack lounge'
Great video. As a Liverpool fan, Owen occupies such a strange place. A great player that probably was mismanaged early in his career which later led to his injuries. For all his talent, it feels strange that at the five clubs he played for, he isn’t remembered fondly by any of them.
My (United fan) feeling with Ince is that he portrays professionalism rather than club loyalty. Ince prefers United but is open in that if Liverpool were in a final against a team he didn't play for he would support them. Owen seems to be in an odd position of simping for Liverpool even though Liverpool fans openly remain hostile to him. I don't think the same hostility is there from United fans for Ince. Ince was sold by Ferguson, it wasn't something Ince was looking for. Similarly United had the opportunity to resign him and didn't take it.
I disliked him the moment he went to Madrid, I hate McManaman for the same reason. I used to own a McManaman shirt, I gave it away as soon as he signed for Madrid
I don’t like Owen. But he made the 2005-06 Champion League winner much more sweeter, that Liverpool won right after he left for Real Madrid to win more trophy.
Michael Owen was world class ….. the 2 goals against Arsenal in the 2001 fa cup final is one my favourite memories supporting Liverpool Fc & I’ve supported them since 77
Always seemed an obvious 'player has one big contract left so runs down his deal to maximise the money he recieves on his next contract' type thing...he wanted that sweet signing on bonus that only out of contract players on a free receive, see mcmanaman and Owen for previous examples, there was no way we could ever match what psg offered him with our extremely strict wage structure that had to have salah as the biggest earner or it would simply break down into chaos, I mean mane was raising hell wanting parity with mo, eventually leaving because we couldn't pay them both 300kpw+ so there was no way in hell wijnaldum could be paid anything like that. Psg on the other hand didn't have to pay a fee for him and are rich so literally threw money at him...despite what he said publicly it is now obvious gini never had any real interest in staying at Liverpool...and why should he? He was worth the money he got at psg and he had served us with distinction
Not many players that leave Liverpool to join a top rival have ever reproduced their best Liverpool form except Suarez and maybe Macmanaman, others like Torres and Owen may have won trophies but never achieved the form they had at Liverpool, at least Fowler and Rush both returned and still won trophies
He just didn’t understand the mentality behind playing for Liverpool that’s why he left for Madrid just so he could say he had played for them, joining Utd was unforgivable even though not directly from Liverpool he obviously lacked empathy for LFC or it’s fans otherwise he would have backed out of Utd offer, Fowler was completely different as he was a scouser and was so excited about coming back even though not playing as much
Michael Owen is a traitor not cause he went to Madrid and left Liverpool or him joining Newcastle or stoke it was joining utd and winning the premier league with them but also these days he will act like a liverpool legend and a utd legend he is neither he kept getting injured since leaving Liverpool his last silverware being the league cup against utd he was a hero at Liverpool and he tarnished his whole legacy. For money and to win a Premier league with the he rivals. He will never be a liverpool legend. Fowler went to city before they had oil money but played for Liverpool after I think Owen is just a football mercenary who likes money but joining utd when he had offers wen was linked with other premier league teams and other teams abroad. Fergie at utd was a big gambler and loved the horses races and so did Owen. He will always be a good player until 03 but his whole legacy has been tarnished now from what he says in his book about Newcastle and stoke to playing and scoring for rivals and celebrating with utd
Nah, it started before he joined United. Watch the video. Add to the reasons mentioned he came along whilst God was playing, who then got sold to Leeds..
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on Roy Evans team in mid 90s? Would they have won the league under a different manager? Or players weren't good enough? Or just couldn't get the players needed to compete? Or just do a video on Robbie Fowler and I'll watch that
@@hughmccarthy yeah some great idea there, I have such fond memories of the mid 90s team as a kid, will definitely do more on that. The Evans idea is an interesting one!
I live a few miles away from his Gaff in N Wales. Not only did he use a helicopter to get to Newcastle. He used to borrow David Mcleans (local business man) helicopter and pilot. The tight t**t wouldn't even rent his own. I used to see it all the time. It would have been cheaper to move the club physio to N Wales than Owen flying up to Newcastle for treatment
He was just breaking through when I started supporting Liverpool so I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for him - people forget just how good he was in those first few years at Liverpool. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he was attracting Mbappe-like levels of hype after the '98 World Cup. But I don't think any fanbase really warmed to him - even while at Liverpool he never seemed to be as liked as Fowler or Gerrard though. He never seemed that into football either, which makes it really weird that he's regularly on as a pundit (he's not as bland as he used to be but still not great)
He was not as loved as fowler or Gerrard, I think it's because fans saw fowler and Gerrard as one of their own whose fame stature ad global association of them was in a Liverpool shirt. As soon as owen scored THAT goal against Argentina he would never have that initial associations as a liverpool player first a d that's what separated him from Robbie. I dint think liverpool fans dont like him we just dint put him in tbe idol category his fame and ability would indicate.
I remember the infamous pamphlet but I'd never heard about it being a whopping 32 pages. Imagine, 32 whole pages about how wonderful Michael Owen is! My stance on Owen softened after I heard him in conversation with Jamie Carragher on a podcast (Greatest Game, I think it was called). But it's softened into ambivalence. I just don't care about him any more.
@@andycantwell be cruel, in fact be very cruel 🤣 he did a number on us and is viewed as a legend! He is quite definitely not that man. Even rats chase away their traitors. So I give you my best . . feck off smc feck off away from LFC and get yourself a life far away from Liverpool. Oh, and sort your hair out deek head! 🤣🤣🤣
Finding out what kind of man he really is crushed me. When I was a plucky 4 year old boy first getting into sports, I just thought that Michael Owen was a guy who liked to play football and so I felt I could identify with him. I recall reading a how-to-become-a-footballer type book that he had wrote and seeing him playing his PS1 and having a kick about with his friends made me think 'oh, he's just like me but older'. How wrong I was!
Michael Owen was my favourite Liverpool player. He was a superstar and he was homegrown. To this day I think he was one of our best ever strikers and I have great memories of the FA Cup he won single handedly. I would not say I dislike him more that I am disappointed. Fair enough he wanted to leave, that's football, it was the way his departure was manged through the press and the way he said he wouldn't leave without ensuring Liverpool got value but he dragged on his transfer for so long that he was going to get a Bosman if we didn't accept the money from Real Madrid. For a guy who was club captain, had played first team since he was a teenager and a guy who had continually been selected when he was not in premium form it just seemed a bit disloyal.
Great video. How about a video based on our biggest flops with their biggest moments of ‘glory.’ Initial thoughts… david n’gog scoring against utd, ryan babel scoring against utd, aquilani…think he scored in europe? Andy carroll against city, mellor against arsenal, voronin…when he was sold. Etc etc. just a thought to remind us of how things could always be worse 😂
Still one of my favourite Liverpool players. He pushed for a Liverpool return, we didn’t want him and Utd put the only realistic offer to him at the time. Should he have took it? He admits himself these days he probably shouldn’t have but you only get one career and we forget he isn’t a born scouser.
This is gonna sound so petty but getting into football properly around 1993, I was 9yrs old and Robbie Fowler was everything to me and over time I felt like the shine was off him when Owen burst onto the scene and made it that it was a matter of time before Fowler went…which did happen and I put it down to Owen, I think that was the start of my hatred for the man! The fact that he said every year since he left Liverpool before he signed for Utd he was trying to come back is bollocks and a way of making himself feel better for leaving us!
Yeah all my jerseys as a kid had Fowler 23 (or 9) on the back. Owen used to be quite public about his preference to play alongside Heskey too, although I understand that one, but still didnt help him overall.
That isn't necessarily true. Carragher and Gerrard said in their autobiographies that whenever he met up with them for England after coming back from Spain he was pestering them about coming back to Liverpool. I don't like that he joined utd and they got him on a free transfer but Liverpool missed the boat when it came to getting him and it's questionable that they ever wanted to board it. His injury record may have been a factor but they could have done worse than bring him back. Him and Torres might have forged a good partnership in attack.
I think I remember a quote from a Liverpool fan saying Owen was and England player who played for Liverpool but Fowler was a Liverpool player who played foe England. As as nufc fan I always thought he was an individual rather than a team player
Owen made his debut the season after I first got into football. He was my favourite player back then. He's made some mistakes but I don't really hate him.
Great video! Liverpool cult heroes could be a decent one? The likes of Ragnar Klavan, Dudek, Gary Mac, Litmanen, Sinama Pongolle, etc.. would make for some interesting commentary in their own unique ways. Houllier in particular had a habit for mental signings. Origi deserves his own episode for sure.
I liked that Andy. A dive into what actually happened under Benitez to cause us to lose Xavi Alonso and Xavier Mascherano for buttons. Two phenomenally talented players whose time at Liverpool was mystifyingly cut short.
I haven't collected the data or done any research but if Michael Owen bumped into most Liverpool fans they would be appreciative of his time at the club and what he achieved. Great player in his day and the FA cup final against Arsenal when we got hammered and he won it for us is enough for most decent folk to say thank you.
Didnt Owen say he'd never drank tea or coffee before? Ive heard the 5 film thing before.. The 13 yr old keeper almost got to his shots though to be fair But celebrating afterwards...geez..reminds me of Competitive Dad from The Fast Show..!! His pace was frightening as a youngster but the injuries just killed his career. Still got 40 goals for England.. Never would call him a liverpool legend myself.. His commentary is meh...
He joined united which is unforgivable but he just doesn’t seem like a likeable person. I know a few people who have met him and they all say the same thing.
Loved Owen growing up I was 10 when we played Arsenal in the fa cup final and still remember it like it was yesterday one of my best football memories but he ruined it all with the way he left and then went on to join United
I'm glad i've finally heard someone else say they don't appreciate what MO did to LFC, not just myself - Yayyyyyy!! 😄 It's true - ya just don't turn ya back on your club you started your 1st team career at. Especially as he started professionally at the LFC academy! I used to appreciate Owen when he scored some great goals e.g. the 2 against Arsenal in the FA Cup final; against CD Alaves; in the Worthy Cup and the Wonder Goal for England. But then to eventually join with our arch rivals just cos he couldn't get back into LFC rather wiped that all out 🙄 * shaking head *
He committed the ultimate betrayal. He went to United instead of returning to Liverpool when he left Newcastle United. That's like a Yankees player going to The Red Soxs after leaving the Braves.
I've never loved a player like I loved Michael Owen as a kid. My first match at Anfield was in 2001 against Newcastle and he scored a hattrick. A few months later he scored his double against Arsenal to win the FA Cup. He was electric, he was winning us trophies and winning the balon dor. I was 8, he was my hero. Now I feel absolutely nothing for him. Not hate, just nothing. Like if Didi Hamman or Emile Heskey is doing punditry, I'll remember them fondly. If it's Owen, it's like the past never happened. It's like I've written him out of my childhood. I don't associate him with Liverpool FC anymore, it's sad how it turned out really.
A massively underestimated piece of 'Owenacular' is his advert for Land Rover. Check that and tell me that this man knows anything of normal people and their ways... Joining untied was indeed the cardinal sin though, yeah....
His punditry is horrific too, he says nothing insightful and honestly it just feels like some idiot next to you is saying everything you're already seeing with your eyes, it gets annoying after 10 minutes. Same with Mcmanaman, some of these guys are stealing a wage.
I still love Owen. He was an incredible striker for us. Sure he went to Utd but that was because Liverpool wouldnt let him come back and that was our loss and fault. He is one of the best strikers we have ever seen
I'd be interested to know what you think Roy Keane's comments about Steven Gerrard recently: “What gets my back up is when I hear so called experts say Steven Gerrard was loyal. Never. Give Over. Give me a break. He wanted to join Mourinho at Chelsea, he was even driving down the M1 to sign before a few, alleged, unsavoury things happened to change his mind. When our gaffer was interested, Steven rang a fellow international teammate, mentioning no names, who was at Man United, to see if they felt he would get game time given we had myself, Beckham, Ryan, Scholesy and Nicky. Not a chance. He liked to be a big fish in a small pond at Liverpool. Moving to bigger clubs would have seen him shrivel up, no longer the big fish. Absolutely, Honestly. Trust me, he was keen to leave on several occasions. Loyal, Steven, give me a break.” Obviously Roy doesn't know much about British motorways! Liverpool to London on the M1? Errr..... No.
I wouldn't be a liverpool fan if not for Owen. My family were not into football but did watch international. The first game I remember was Eng 5 Ger 0 and after than I knew I wamtes to support the team Owen played for. Mever changed my allegiance though.
Dear Andy, I (35) would think that we are of a similar vintage. I would love, just once, for somebody to do a deep dive/run down/explainer of what EXACTLY went on with the whole Gillet and Hicks thing... maybe somebody's written a book about it, and maybe there are vids on here about it, but I'm fully not gonna bother searching for it, I'm just gonna type it in here. Cuz like, ye always hear: "Ohhh it was a dark time for the club. It nearly went bust etc etc"... but ye never really hear anyone actually outlining what really went on there?? I remember Carragher wrote about it in his book, but I don't remember him goin tooo deep on it...
Its just disappointing that he never became what he should have which was one of, if not the best player of his generation. When you listen to players his age talk about him when he was in the youth system it's crazy. Rio Ferdinand said when they played Owen's youth team people would rush around just to get a look at him because he had shattered every goal scoring record for club and country at every youth level and was kind of a myth at that point. Carragher has known him all of that time and he said that there was a magazine that ranked every kid at every age group in the world and from 12 years old until 19, Owen was voted the number 1 player in the world for his age every year. There was no internet back then but anyone who was in the know, knew who he was and were waiting to see what he was going to do on the big stage. Then he breaks into the first team at 17, wins the PL golden boot in his debut season, goes to the world cup that summer as an 18 year and is one of the stars of the tournament and then wins his second PL golden boot in his second season for the club all by 19 years old. Then he snaps his hamstring in year 3 and we have to settle for him just being one of the best strikers in the league instead of maybe the best player in the world that he could have became. For a guy to come in with so much expectation and not only live up to it, but actually surpass all expectations in those first two years, he should have eventually ascended to the top of the world. But he said himself that first hamstring injury was the beginning of the end. It was the first of many that would have him end up a shell of himself by his mid 20's.
Ive always thought 5 or 7 minute snippet videos of historical players and their achievements at Liverpool, in a profiling fashion, would be an entertaining way of learning or reinforcing our history, legend and romance.... but I'm not arsed to start a YT channel.😂
I can see why. In his prime at Liverpool he was one of the best strikers in the world, every team was terrified of him but the guy had no loyalty to the club, any club so why would any fans have loyalty to him
Yeah, he should not have joined UTD. However, let's not forget the good memories, Like the 2001 FA Cup Final. We were being outplayed and losing to Arsenal, until up stepped Owen with 2 goals in the last ten minutes. l remember the headlines the next day. "He did it all on his Owen."
He broke my 4 year old heart so fuck him haha. My earliest Liverpool memories are of me getting an away shirt with his name on the back. Then when I was around 10 years old he moves to Utd, at a time in which 3/4 of my mates were Utd supporters. For some of us, it can be hard to forgive. Seeing that goal (and celebration) against City at the 137th minute of Fergie Time or whatever it was definitely soured me on him forever lol.
From my memories it didn't go down well when he complained that the Kop didn't sing his name the same as they always sang for Robbie Fowler. I think that was the first I realised the Liverpool fans liked but not loved him.
I don't, I LOVE Michael Owen. (He ALWAYS speaks highly/positively about Liverpool as a pundit) You can't knock a Man for making a decision about his future- He made a HUGE success of himself- Great for him
Everything in this video contributes to the reason some of us dislike him. The number one reason is of course the United move, but the United move doesn't come about without him chasing England, moving to Madrid and Newcastle and finally the personality that doesn't really consider moving to United might result in him being shunned by Liverpool fans as obvs they'll understand there is Michaels Owens personal glory on the line. The united move, if he just swerved that, then the other stuff would have softened over time and we'd have welcomed him back Fernando Torres style to a legends game. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Rafa went the year after that transfer window. If Owen goes to Hull, or likewise for a year and proves he still has it, hes an open goal like Fowler in 2005 to get the fans onside for Roy Hodgson or for Kenny Dalglish to snap up the next season. But he chose the medal he sat on the bench for over the fans and he pays for it. Unloved by many at Liverpool, a punchline to a joke at United, disliked by Newcastle and irrelevant to Madrid. It was all for England and even there, once he failed to break the scoring record for England he became merely a footnote to David Beckhams story for England once Kane and Rooney all but wiped him away.
When I was 10 I was celtic and Liverpool daft. Larsson and Sutton for celtic Owen and fowler for Liverpool but as I got older I started to notice I was growing out of English football. Its for kids its soulless and rivalry just isn't the same. Nothing will ever compare to celtic vs rangers its a rivalry based on an actual divide in society
Genuinely haven't got an issue with him joining MU as his other options were Hull or the bitters. Owen won a PL medal, fair play in my brain. It's the way Michael the rat refers to them as "we" while representing LFC as an ambassador. Now that's unforgivable. Great video 👍
It’s a culmination of all of what you said, leaving the way he did, being a bit of a pr1ck etc. but, the final nail in the coffin was Yanited. He’ll always be the player without at genuine home no matter how much he tries to tie himself to Liverpool when working for TNT.
Very pleased I found this. Great presenter. I’m afraid most of the reasons the fans dislike or even hate Owen just reflect the chippy, hypersensitive, victim mentality of too many scousers. I don’t enjoy saying that as I’m from Liverpool Liverpool didn’t want to take him back after Madrid or Newcastle. United offered him a contract. It’s simply not true he failed at Madrid. He scored plenty of goals but in the end the politics did for him.
Have some respect for him but I think Benitez broke him and even Gerrard said Benitez tried to sell him... the difference being Gerrard stayed ... Owen jumped ship... and let’s face it his a terrible pundit
He left the summer that Benitez arrived so a bit harsh to blame Rafa. I think the only time that Liverpool were really in for him again was when he left Real, after that it was pretty clear that he wasn't capable of reaching his former heights.
@@garethmann6499 did he. Why do I think he played for one season and then left? I will believe you because I don’t think him really playing for Pool under Benitez
I'm a Liverpool fan and I dont dislike Michael Owen. He was an incredibly skilful , intelligent striker. I remember younger Liverpool fans especially used to love him. He probably started top level football too early, which could have led to the injuries later in his career that pretty much ended his career. He was mediocre at best after he'd been binned by RM and Newcastle, so i couldn't care less he went to Man U. He should have stayed at Liverpool and Im sure he knows it.
In a career sense, Owen ran his legs off for Liverpool. So in later years, he got himself 'sod you' money and medals, few can say they'd do any different.
Really enjoyed that, thanks! I guess like many LFC fans, my biggest complaint is Man Utd related, but that's just the symptom; he's a mercenary who seems desperate for approval from anywhere, regardless of burning bridges or looking like a bit of a tit. Never knew about the brochure though.. googled it and now I can't unsee it 🤣
For me, I do not blame McManaman in the slightest. We were a club going absolutely nowhere and he was a fantastic talent, and I admit it did kill me at the time but look at what he went on to achieve on the biggest of stages. you cannot call what he did a failure and I do not blame him whatsoever. He is as red as any of us, Owen, I don’t think so.
We don’t all dislike him. We just loved Fowler so much. The reason fans hate him is because he was unbelievable for liverpool and won us the fa cup. Had he been shite and we all hated him we wouldn’t have cared. He went to United when he was crippled. We had ample opportunities to sign him back but didn’t want him. Let it go FFS. Having said that he is a boring bastard.
