Tell that to RU-vid. Lol! Their algorithm doesn't like that these videos are in SD (standard vs. High def.). I'm glad you found what you're looking for.
I remember riding the Vistadome cars through Moffatt Tunnel behind a pair of Rio Grande F7s or F9s as a kid, my dad lugging the family from Denver to Glenwood Springs for a weekend excursion. This would've been the early 80s. As a kid I didn't appreciate the consolidation of RR companies then underway, and the blandness of operation these mergers would entail...
Could you imagine they build a 3/4th sized replica of one of the d&gw's L-105 class challengers and put it on display near at the entrance to the tunnel?
I love the thought! Hmm. They do have to solve the heat and exhaust problem, given that it's a steam engine in the tunnel. However, maybe it could work with an oil burner, run efficiently, in combination with the tunnel's existent exhaust blower system.
They ran steam through the tunnel on a regular basis before diesels. However steam excursion probably wont happen anytime soon. If one wants to ride "an excursion" through Moffat Tunnel, all you have to do is buy a ticket to ride Amtrak
Sort of. UP 844 was to traverse the Joint Lines and then go west on the Tennessee Pass line that day. In fact, the steamer was delayed because of the Ski Train special. So no, I stayed with UP 844 and skipped the special Ski Train trip.
No. I feel your pain, but I know that like me, most guys followed the steamer. I have video of the regular Rio Grande Ski Train on RU-vid, but I'm sorry I couldn't help you with footage of that trip.
