Imagine having the ENTIRE League of Legends roster inside of a Smash Bros styled game? Now im saddened that it’s cancelled as the possibilities and combinations would be near infinite. Would it be hell to balance? Absolutely. Oh well, maybe in another universe.
Smash bros aint balanced lol(Steve banned for being overpowered, Gannon is so bad that pro's play him) but still even though it would have been epic to have it
@@ztriker4406Also each smash Bros games has it's own banned character at pro-play (Meta Knight for brawl). But then again, a party brawler isn't meant to be balanced, as it's balanced on gentlemen's rules, and whoever picks the most annoying/Overpower character, is balanced by every other player targeting them until they're eliminated.
@@kiritotheabridgedgod4178 Steve was mainly banned in *some* regionals due to an exploit found, but he is still allowed at big ones Bayo in Smash 4 was banned in *some* regionals before her nerfs Meta Knight in Brawl was only banned in *some* tournaments, the big names still allowed it with a rule against the infinite cape In Melee the closest ban is probably the no wobbling rule for Ice Climbers Smash 64 debated a bit on bans for Kirby and Pikachu but it never went anywhere
i think you don't know how much they already spent on the MMO dear boy. they legit started from the beginning to take another direction a while ago. they will NOT be able to cancel it.
If a whole-ass finished game or show can be cancelled for whatever reason I don't think a game that we haven't seen yet is an exception no matter how much shxt they wasted on it.
@@apollojustice3431 ghostcrawler did say that they wouldnt let him release the game if the game wasn't going to be genre defining and something that would represent Riot's quality. Yes, he's gone, but I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't ghostcrawler who made that decision and that is still in place, they knew very well how volatile that market is and if they can't make what they see as the next wow killer then I'm pretty sure its up for grabs as a cancellation.
@@whiskoo9941 The biggest problem when it comes to MMO games though is when a game is hyped up as or is intended to be a "wow killer". Bliz have dropped the ball multiple times with WoW (or so I've heard) yet the game still sits at the top.
no, it clearly wouldn't. If they are so bad at balancing their current games, i don't want to know how unbalanced this one will become. Smash bros will always stay peak!
I'm so sad they got rid of it! The only fighting game I play is Smash. I've never fucked with Tekken, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, etc. Those feel alot more restrictive to me and heavy, whereas Smash is more free and floaty, and I MUCH prefer that!
I had a dream of a Runeterra soulslike and I was so sad when I woke up. I was playing as TF rolling through barrels fighting a boss and it was so much fun 😭
Riot couldn't find an efficient way to monetize, unfortunately. Hopefully they'll find a way to regain interest, I agree I miss LoR but it just isn't the same these days.
@@mycapslockisbrokennvmifixe7518 it wasn't that popular in the first place. The problem with that game monetization is that it require a massive amounts of players to be profitable. However the genre and hardcore gameplay make it so that will never happened
Multiversus isn't attracting because it's mostly TV shows characters and not video games characters. Video games have their own meta of popularity, otherwise games like Mad Max and Avatar would top the charts - as they released alongside popular movies. Star Wars is one of the only exception and that's because they've been making niche games for a looooong time and there's a desire to explore more of this universe. Dragon ball another because people want more fights. That's about it. For the scope of brawlhalla, it's doing REALLY well
And even then, it's not like it didn't attract, it's launch showed a massive amount of players, it's just that they left due to the devs not fixing the game, and after a year of hiatus they release the game in an even worse state People clearly wanted the game to succeed, the devs just mishandled it.
@@valor2284 yeah, everything feels so laggy, like i needs to be 30% faster. The characters not being the problem is proven by the fact SO MANY PEOPLE signed in to play day on and it exploded, that everyone almost immediately left was issue with the game
@@aetriandimitri190 Yeah it has nothing to really do with the characters as most people like playing with familiar Warner Bros. IP, but it instead has to do with the game’s horrible net code, the slower pace in the full launch of the game, and the monetization issue it has. The game’s net code has honestly been really bad with the beta launch and the full release so that’s probably one of the biggest issues with the game but the game also got slower with the full release which people didn’t enjoy as they thought the fast paced nature suited the game more. Lastly they literally added a new currency for their PvE mode and they increased the prices for characters making playing the game less rewarding and spending money to buy characters and remove restrictions more rewarding. All in all the game literally sold its soul after getting the second chance it needed.
@@lightlingzooma-69 like the monetization is ridiculous and they removed QoL just to be more scummy like losing training to try out characters so you have to grind more than a week to get one character just to maybe not even like them, which just pushes you to pay. Me and my brother and all my other friends that play smash bros were extremely excited and played during the beta. We felt it had issues at launch but expected fixes and they just didn't come so we lost interest. But were hopeful for full release. Then the full game came out and not one person even tried it after seeing the changes they made The blame is solely on the devs and their lazy ness and greed, not the characters or genre
I think this video was very matted with "context". Having the context of nintendos SMASH is a important detail when looking at this decision by Riot. I don't think there was any info in the video that didn't show us info on that side of the story. HE repeats a lot of info each video but you should always assume the viewr has only the least amount of knowledge when clicking the video.
Talking at a slower pace, reading every single word of an announcement/article instead of paraphrasing, talking to the audience like they're children and explaining the meaning even when it's in front of their face
I doubt Riot would give up that easily on "Pool Party". I'm confident that Riot would revisit the idea in the future once they figure out how to make their own spin to the game and not just "Smash Bros but League". Riot is definitely aware of the state of the platform fighting genre. I don't think Riot would even green lit the project if there's little to no chance the game would turn a profit.
I mean, a league smash bros could've been cool but i really think working on two fighting games at once must be a good sign to know you are probably going too far
trueeee one more game is definitely too much for them to handle - they should stick to the small amount of 6 games they are simultaneously working on / balancing
I would've love to play Riot's version of Smash with League champs. I mean I could'nt afford to buy a console to play Smash but Riot would've provided us that chance to try if they continued on. Sad it got shutdown though.
@@captaineflowchapka5535 melee is not free and pirating is pirating, you arent cool for trying to call a duck a dog. Melee is also mainly not played on PC. Unless, ofcourse, you download an emulator and pirate it. Everyone knows what to do. Dont spin it as something it isnt.

A SuperSmash with LoL would be AWESOME! They already have all thier moves and Skins for multiple characters on screen at once. And with ARCANE season 2 coming out this year, it would be an EASY slamdunk!
Guys we cant let that slide we need to advocate for the game and do something like a petition to show them that people want a good pc super smash and also really want their champs in such a game the potential is infinite for a competitive super smash for pc cause there is literally none
Ive been a league and melee player for years and im super bummed to hear this. Honestly the depth of movement and the feel of melee hasnt been replicated by any modern game and while i have doubts that riot would be able to make it as good as melee, i would have loved to see them try. It sucks because the modern platform fighters made based off melee(multiverses, all star brawl, ultimate, etc.) Seem to struggle to make a good feeling learning curve. The more time and practice you put into melee, the better it feels, and that feeling never goes away. I feel like the issue with those newer games is they make the learning curve and movement more or less accessible from day 1 so after a few months of playing you basically have all the tech down and its just a matter of ironing it out. Melee isnt perfect and theres things that i feel make it feel harder than nessecary like l cancelling, but its that challenge and always feeling like im getting better and the game feels better is just so good in melee. Its one of the most rewarding learning curves ive ever had in a video game or out of it
If you were looking for soemthing closer to melee, I'd recomend Rivals of Aether, they have a 2nd one coming out soon. plays a lot closer to Melee and Project M than the more casual ones like multiverses or brawlhalla or those sorta ones
@@ThineDude Nah I don't like how Rivals plays, I don't like how there's no shield and in general edgeguarding is nerfed. The only game that feels like melee is Project M/Project+
Unfortunately if it was going toward a more casual route, it was probably a good decision to cancel it. It's not going to be able to compete with Smash for that audience. Should have just went forward with the original competitive vision or focused on 2XKO from the start instead of trying to make two fighting games at once (even though platform fighters aren't really a traditional fighting game).
Smash bros may have had a good sale but that didn't really guarantee Riot would too a part of the reason (if not the major one) why smash does succeed in this genre while any other company doesn't (despite everything) is because Smash already has decades of history in this genre with a fanbase of players who have been playing and enjoying the title over those decades and it's generally a little hard to kill a large community who has been existing for decades even if the genre is falling apart On the contrary, others are seen as "smash bro copies" and don't attract as much the attention for they have to build up a community from the ground thus have to give a first impression... First impression in which they are given a ceiling of standard to meet expectation named Smash Bros. and if they don't surpass that ceiling, they fall apart.
I think Pool Party would've done better than the hopes for their fighting game. It's hard for even fighting game legends like King of Fighters or Soul Calibur to compete with Tekken and Street Fighter. Not to mention it's market is even more crowded than the party fighter genre.
Yeah I think it's a bad call, we are still getting new tekkens and mortal Kombat, meanwhile smash is currently waiting for the next console which could take a while. And the rest of the competition is very old so players would likely want something new I'd definitely take a platform fighter over 2hko since mk is still having dlc meanwhile smash hasn't been updated in a while
@gigabyte3420 same, but I can't help but feel like they made the wrong call here. I think it'll be very hard for Riot to breakthrough with their game, while Pool Party, if done well, could've been a great competitor with Smash.
@@christianprevost8455 yes we are, it would be idiotic not to, plus they've already mentioned that the next smash won't have everyone again. Can't have a next smash that won't have everyone if there is no new smash
Heya! i actually play tested this game here on the Philippines, it was super fun and almost ready for release sad to see it never get out but i was soo lucky i got to test it!
it had chibi-like characters, different maps around runeterra and also fun bg music, i had the chance to test it out using a provided mobile phone. i remember loving how op blitz was as well as tristana, and the volleyball mode as so fun
Honestly though, Riot could've broken the ice with this platform fighter. Reason Multiversus and others failed, was because they also setup to be a quick buck gambit. I mean look at how deep Multiversus went... not really at all. At times it was janky and felt unfinished. Plus the Beta was out for so long, that hype died before the game released. With as much polish and marketing Riot can do for their own titles, their new game honestly would survive with no issues (id just suggest porting it to steam too, so the potential audience can be larger).
THERE WAS A WHAT?! MAN SHIT... I WOULDA ACTUALLY PLAYED THT. See like, Vel'koz knocking up people into a void beam?! 6:43 Necrit... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!
@@letyrox2709 ironically enough, they are alot of rumors about them working on an RTS, and these rumors tend to be true over time, since valorant and their mmo was rumored first too
I think having a smash game come out alongside 2XKO would spread the players who like fighting games. I think killing Pool Party was a good idea to focus more on 2XKO
With Riot Forge, I only wanted either a Smash Bros. Game or Mario Kart themed around Bandle City. That's all I wanted... Though a Survival Horror game of running away from Warwick, Nocturne, Fiddlesticks, Evelynn, etc. wouldn't have been bad either. But thankfully this means they can't mess things up like adding a bunch of characters from only one section of the roster ( *Cough* *Cough* Fire Emblem)
Nintendo games have a way of being casual friendly, yet mechanically deep. Smash Ultimate is crazy when you really deep dive into what a character can do, and Splatoon 3 has been pushed quite far as well. Rivals of Aether is just melee mechanics and the characters are kind of hard to play, where as in Smash Ultimate, anyone can play Ike, Samus, Kirby, Ganon, and many more, it's simple but very hard to master.
I genuinely expected Mii costumes from League at some point, Lee sin, and Yasuo as Mii Brawler and Mii Swordmaster, and then 1 of Senna, Lucian, Jinx, Caitlyn, Tristana or whatever as Mii Gunner.
I think why multi versus isn’t so popular is the weird 3d the way financial side is managed and most of all they balanced the game into a 2vs 2 when the smash audience whant proper 1 vs 1 fun mechanics
I never considered how a lot of people bought smash for reasons outside competitive play - and I was one of those people actually. Friendly competition and the various single player modes in addition to the character roster. Other platform fighters don’t really compare, and if they’re free to play they are heavily focusing on the competitive aspect of it. Nintendo meanwhile makes a sale whenever and the numbers don’t necessarily reflect anything other than that.
I would have been so much more happy with a smash-like fighting game than 2xk0 honestly... I played so much smash and it always frustrated me how they treated the competitive scene
I feel like the project should've continued, they have everything to be able to succeed at it. First, Smash Bros fans are starving for a new experience and the competitive scene would do anything to be able to be supported by the company. Second, roster wise is the best thing ever and the setting in terms of both "for fun" and "competitive" modes could've been so easy to manage, just as in Smash and even League, you have the option to do draft or ranked or go to an ARAM if you feel like just having fun. Lastly, the monetization system would've been the same as in League, skins, entrances, loading screens, taunts or emotes, etc, we don't have that in Smash and it would've been just right for the genre. I think it was a missed opportunity.
I believe with the development of Arena there could a direction to go into "casual competitive". Someway to make it somewhat party mode, but with competitive options.
also, the subgenre is called "platform fighter" not "party fighter" also also, i'm with tb skyen on this one, multiversus failed because it made dumb bad decisions that their playerbase didn't like, but that doesn't mean that pool party would necessarily fail. Heck pool party would make bank as long as they give enough time between the launch of Project L and pool party for both of them to breath.
An MMO and a fighting game are both hard genres to compete with in this current year. They should jump in the solo RPG genre like Genshin Impact in my opinion.
I wonder if they'll ever work on an VR game? Experiencing runeterra in VR would be amazing. It's understandable that they won't be doing it; doesn't seem that profitable.
brawl is hated for the tripping because you cant turn it off, but other then that smash can be as wacky as you want, making the casual/competitive distiction is kind of dumb here, they dont have to be mutually exclusive, smash is both casual and competitive depending on how you are playing, you just have to give the players the option to do whatever they want
The issue with Multiversus is that they tried to combine characters from TV shows and movies into a game. To be a fan, you need to have watched those TV shows and enjoy the style of the game. Smash Bros on the other hand is characters from only video games battling in another video game. Chances are if you are playing this video game, you've played other video games before, so a character you've seen before is most likely in Smash Bros. I just don't understand what audience Multiversus was trying to catch with this game tbh
I agree with Necrit- I think Riot made the right call in pulling the plug. I'm down for a Riot platform fighter, but I don't think there's a massive audience to draw from if you build the game from the ground up to be a hyper-competitive tryhard experience. I think the League community has shown it has an appetite for fun, casual game modes. So I think a platform fighter that's designed to be a casual party game from the get-go would make much more sense. Just make sure it has depth for those who wish to pursue it. The problem is building a title that can actually compete with the industry Gaint in Smash would likely take a highly specialized team and a ton of money. Maybe trying to compete simply isn't worth it. I do want to see a Riot-made party-style game one day though.
It would have clashed too much with 2XKO, especially when 2XKO will be called the "Riot/League Fighting Game" by the playerbase and it would take alot of attention and marketing power away. In addition to the risk with Party Fighters like SSB
Potentially good esport/live service game. - Arcade Sport Games - Platform Fighter - Top Down combat Racing - Looter Shooter (move all marksman here 😂😂)
i think at the first they really confident about league universe can be selling good, but so many project not really have a good sign and their economy its not stable, so they play safe now not to be aggresive anymore. and i think they will do this smashbros genre as a last bullet to make player stay playing, like tft in League, POC in LOR, or they just do basic game as foundation and other genre can be added anytime they want
Smash Bros. Ultimate had probably the most hype I've ever seen related to a fighting game when it was announced. I don't know if anything could realistically compete with it tbh, but I'm open to be proven wrong.
i wouldn't say that fighting games are notorious for not evolving, anime fighters are constantly pushing the boundries for "what can we put in a fighting game", street fighter tries something completely new every main entry, and even if we ignore those points, Project L hasn't done anything mechanically new
Here's a thing, for the longest time Riot had a (in my opinion bad) habit of releasing announcments about their new games, VEEEEEEEERY early into the development, Im pretty sure we've been waiting about 5+ years for both 2XKO, and MMO. So that kind of feels weird to me that they have apparently worked on 2 games (very similar ones, presumably) and decided to not let out even a peep about the platform fighter.
brawlhalla is actually very widely successful, having some of the biggest prize pools in all of fighting game history and a thriving esports scene to this day. i’m surprised he didn’t mention that at all
Brawlhalla is still a good working game with a lot of players mostly playing it for fun but in the viral scene it's not the best because of smash bros, although because of its uniqueness and giving players the abilities to button smash and play with their friends it's still kicking
I was confused when I heard the news. I thought it was the game 2XKO that got cancelled. I never heard of pool party up until news of its cancellation came out.
I feel that cancelling it is not a good idea right now because games like multiverse failed due to their own dumb problems they created, in the current time the party games are getting old and stale or just do things in a certain way that rub a lot of players of popular party games like Smash Ultimate in the wrong way, some things like locking characters, focusing on team fights, making the gameplay floaty and too gimmiky. The most popular subset of platform fighter is like Smash Brothers, what companies get wrong is why people love it so much, not just for characters which is a huge part, but just being fluid gameplay, that's it
TBH - As a hardcore smash fan the other higher budget smash like games (multiverses, nickelodeon etc.. ) just don't feel as fun to play as ultimate or melee. I think if anyone could match nintendos expertise it would be riot so it's sad this project never got a chance.
THE sad thing is that a Platform league of legends game would have just been flat out better than X2KO... there's really no competitive Platform fighting game on the market where there's plenty of 2d fighting games saturating it. X2ko will never make a dent, it already can't even stand up.
The story of kassadin and or kaisa traveling through the void. Or yorick in the shadow isle seeing as he was shafted during his own event i doubt they would make a game for him though, even if he would be the best character for it
This news makes me sad. A smash-like game would fit the roster of league so much better than 2xko. Where a normal fighting game is limited to fairly normal sized human fighters, a smash game based on league could have incorporated all sorts of unique styles like cho’gath, fizz, teemo, and Zoe.
i think each game had their own issues and riot wouldve actually had a great chance at making it a successful game, im sure the league community wouldve loved a game like this but i guess we're getting 2xko so itd be a lil weird
8:30 so basically, Riot shied away from releasing a party figher game because the one thing they are incapable of is making games where you can have some fun with friends.
Still waiting for bandle city tag team racing with original crash team racing drift mechanics + emphasis on 2v2v2v2 team deathmatch, capture the flag etc. League abilities can be used when collecting gems like in spyro final battle against ripto. 2 orbs of same color + final orb decides ability. If you collect 5 orbs you get to use your ultimate. poppis ult sends her enemy fliping backwards. Lulus ult makes her enmeies unable to drive past ehr or get knocked up, tristan's ult sends her enemy away or sends ehr flying forward if used in the opposite way, teemos shrooms slow enemies and blinds them for a short duration, rumbles ult slows enemies, corki dashes a distance forward. games liek these opens up the world of runeterra to the players. Collab events with valorant or pro players. Imagine driving as faker. Each season takes us across runeterra and adds some new maps and champs before returning back the same season at season 12 for more new champions and maps of that same region.kart racing is the missing genre.
