Before people start panicking, he moved to be closer with his surviving family. In December he tweeted this " I tend to avoid personal news here; that’s not why most of you follow me. But I just lost my brother and my father does not have long to live so I will be AFK for some time." Less than 24 hours ago he tweeted that he sold his house and is moving. Hard to be a producer of a mmo remote.
That’s good. I mean, that’s horrible for his loss. He should do what’s best for himself and his family. But that’s good news that he didn’t leave Riot on bad terms or anything like that.
Tbh, I'd be panicking if the MMO was a small project but it's a massive one, meaning many people are working with the same idea in mind. Even if the "leader" steps down, they can probably find a new one in a reasonable amount of time. Also, knowing the workflow of programmers, just because the leader is gone doesn't mean the whole schedule is gone too. I doubt it'll affect the workflow that much behind the scenes 🤷♂️. The problem would be if they bring a new guy from the outside to lead the project 😐.
@@louisrobitaille5810 let hope it not the guy who's good at smooth talk but have zero clue or knowledge of what he was doing and the reason he got job is because the boss recommended him
@@louisrobitaille5810 The issue is that people have already been scarred by good projects being ruined by bad leadership. If the leadership is in question, then the entire project is in question. They're still early in development so there's no guarantee that anything Ghostcrawler has contributed will even last long enough to be in the final build. That's the concern. Not to be overly pessimistic but it's a real possibility that whoever has stepped up to take over the overseeing of the development of this game can screw over everything ghostcrawler has laid out, to put it bluntly. This is heightened due to Ghostcrawler's reputation, specifically. The MMO genre has always been a shaky one. Very very few succeed, and the ones that do, don't typically last long, other than just a handful. They're not very profitable. Ghostcrawler has been a very trustworthy figurehead in both the MMO community and the Riot community for a good long while now, so specifically losing his influence puts a TON of things up in the air. We really don't know the full extent of what he's contributed over the 9 years at Riot to make the runeterran lore and league of legends game as it is now, and by extension what exactly will be lost by his departure. Only time will tell, but as it stands now, it is uncertain. On top of that, he was the sole connection that the community had with the development team. We don't know what dev will take his place and leak out information for us, or if there will be one at all. We might just be kept in the dark for years now. Personally, I trust him when he says he's built a team he's happy about. But that's only cuz that's the only real option right now. I can certainly understand why people are concerned over this. There is certainly a plethora of talent in Riot, but Greg Street is irreplaceable. The Riot MMO under Ghostcrawler's leadership will undoubtedly be different than the Riot MMO that is developed without him. Hopefully, it'll still turn out good. I have faith in Riot in general, but I know for a lot of people, particularly people in the broader MMO community outside of Riot Games, that faith was supported by Greg Street solely.
@@davesherman2096 why not toh? He has a big curriculum and he is very good in his role. He hopped from blizzard cuz blizzard was sinking and is still sinking

@@cccbbbaaa110 I don't understand why people this this MMO is in active development, this MMO is in it's concept phase still. They have a lot to figure out, especially if they want to avoid making a generic MMO that will be forgotten fast.
I’m going to miss ghostcrawer, he’s the only lead dev I’ve ever had a conversation to on Twitter and it really felt like he was listening to my suggestions about the mmo.
I was a big fan of the way GC talked about his views on gaming. So sad to hear about what happened with his brother and father. As much as it sucks to have him step down because he had to move closer with family, if he says the game is in good hands then I trust him for now. Looking forward to seeing more about the Riot MMO in the future.
Worth noting also that a big reason for him stepping down is personal reasons stemming from unfortunate personal tragedies. Heart goes out to them, for I know they really gave theirs to our MMO community.
Still waiting for an MMO to do what Guild Wars 1 did. Amazing story telling. Primarily almost always competitive challenging fights whether it was a random mob or a world boss. Leveling wasn't the focus so gameplay balance and exciting moments was. Greatest version of mmo pvp in existence. Only 8 abilities with one elite skill to slot with approximately 100 skills per class with secondary classes. This effectively gave you 200+ moves to choose from which gave you the most amazing feeling of ownership over your build. You could actually use combinations no one else tried before. I still remember rocking a pvp interrupt ranger/mesmer completely kitted with moves that blew up spellcasting, and interrupted key moves. This meant I was able to focus entirely on shutting down spellcasters most important moves. If I chose wrong and selected unimportant spells to stop I was pretty useless, however guild wars had a system with glyphs over the head of the caster. In this way I could quickly deduce the most important spells to stop, huge aoe, revives, massive heals ect. I never once in my years of playing ever saw a single player with my build. Bring this shit back PLEASE.
i think its a very very bad sign, it depends what the reason is behind his leaving, but generaly if the captain jumps the ship its not a good sign at all.
Friendly reminder that Universe art appearing on the background is from Riot's card game, Legends of Runeterra, which you should check out if you liked the art and are interested in more lore.
Wrath of the Lich King was a great story and artscape, but ultimately it rode the curtails of The Burning Crusade. It's like Pirates of the Caribbean 2... it made more money because it's a sequel to an all-time great so it made a boat-load (sorry). However, it capsized the momentum of the franchise. The movies were good enough to make 5 more, just like WoW's expansions. You could make a case that WotLK was the beginning of the end...
The TLDR is basically Greg had to make a team, he did. Create the scaffolding for the game, he did. And finally, development concepts, which he probably did. He was on the game for 3 years afterall. Since 2020. Necrit is right, Greg did his part for the MMO. Keep faith.
Well last year Greg tweeted that his brother died and his father was dying. I thought his father died as well but who knows maybe he's still alive but in bad health. His reasons for leaving are justified he wants to be closer to family and spend more time with them. According to his last tweets he even moved out to be closer to them. Lost makes people wants to be nearby their loved ones. Also like Greg Street and Necrit said his job is to make sure the game have the best team and direction and if he feels like his job its done than its alright
Of course he said that the team working on Riot's mmo is great , no one will say otherwise or they will have a law suit on their hands. All the top guys at Blizzard : Metzen ,Morhaime,Ghostcrawler and so on.. that left Blizzard in a few years after it was acquired by Activision did not say a bad word about it...but in truth they left because they did not like the new leadership and the way they lead Blizzard...so they jumped boat..... I still have a dream that if Activsion had not acquired Blizzard , Wow would have been somewhat different with all Blizzard veterans at the helm... :(
Well, he could be, since Viego is an undead, which is the closest to being a Lich. But imho, that comparison fits Mordekaiser more in terms of the big baddies department.
Ah man I hope it really is in good hands because their words never stuck by with what they're doing (looking at you their main game). I still have high hopes but I don't know...... Hope it ends well
Honestly the main game is the only problem they got recently, arcane went well, val is doing good, runettera is good too, tft same. Their words are kinda bad just with lol
@@PleasePleaseBeAvailable i dont play val but updates and from i can see from val trailers and such there aint much negative reception as of lol events and such
Id like to hear more people's take on this. To be fair Necrit's take on a game he is basically staking his future on is like asking a republican if being conservative is going to be a good thing.
The biggest budget ever... Well the news say also that Rito is getting rid of event missions in current event and nerfing drops from esports. Certainly something is going wrong in Riot's management and someone is caring more for money than gamers.
Well it is a bit weird. The CEO doesn't seem like money above everything else - type of leader. So probably other higher-ups influencing everything. If part of the league team was arguing with higher ups to let them record a few voice lines for two champions - that will be mostly related to the upcoming new champs, there's indeed something wrong with management. From reports and leaks the league team was left alone and stripped away of more experienced people (gameplay folk, balance, system stuff, art, new champions and reworks, gamemode team, even lore team - basically was moved as a whole and people from it distributed between other projects. Gamemode - too, actually. We all saw it. Event missions and drops nerfs might be unrelated actually. Riot do be doing little trolling sometimes. Mostly trolling themselves with weird decisions and whatnot.

Greg built a team he can trust for the Runeterra MMO and has full confidence in them so I'm not worried in the slightest in regards to that, rather I worry for him at a personal level. I sincerely wish the best for him and his family including the full recovery of his father and offer my condolences for the passing of his brother, I can only imagine the pain such travesties can bring on a person.
I've been saying the same thing man, but I hope they utilize the dynamic event system as opposed to traditional quests like other MMOs. There's a lot Riot can learn from GW2, and potentially improve upon
I've been with guild wars for 8 years and I gotta say... it really feels like they've lost the passion and motivation to deliver quality content. Minimum viable product has been the term throwing around since the last patch Definitely great for roleplay and community though

MMO was in good hands... I will not trust that Greg leaving team is a good sign or that everything is fine. Maybe he just isnt allowed to complain like Mark Hamill was boud by contract to shut up about shitty Star Wars sequel trilogy. Maybe he just left the team just like Henry Cavill left from Witcher because people with power were braindead. "After nine years at Riot it feels like it's time for something new!" I was reading the excerpt at 6:12 and I was confused as to how Ghostcrawler came to be a game designer with a PhD in marine science, but apparently he just uses it to fill games with marine life and I find this hilarious
I am still really hyped for it. From what I remember Greg/Ghostcrawler was hated a lot during his time at WoW so I don't think it's much of a loss. I trust the Riot team more.
My guess is it will be an extension. I agree with Necrit about the most logical thing would be to start with the Northern continent, not including Bridgewater and The Shadow Isle. And have frequent extensions introducing new regions. I'd rather have that than the whole world right away but a fraction of the stuff inside each region.
Silksong is coming in 2023. If we take our time with all the upcoming Riot Forge games PLUS Silksong PLUS Project L game. The wait will not be long. Such great games are on the horizon...
Kinds raises the point of: "why, though?" Might as well make a single-player game then, maybe add co-op on top. That's certainly my perspective on MMO's and how I approached them. Really made the whole thing seem pointless. Your actions never have any actual impact on the world, progression feels off because instead of accounting for a single person it's an entire bloody community of comparison and interaction, infrastructure has to be accounted for which means some things have to be systemically simplified so as to not make the servers explode, modding the experience to any significant degree becomes impossible, etc. It just feels like a waste of effort, imo. Doesn't seem like the alternative approach is any better either, frankly. More PvP / online-centric MMO's are also dying like flies. Maybe it's an industry issue. Lots of different titles begging for player attention and retention and it's not like it's humanly possible to spend more hours of your day on all of them. At some point it just becomes a chore. Then again, that's the perspective of someone who's extremely heavily biased towards single-player only experiences. I just don't have a different perspective.
@@thosebloodybadgers8499 The standard of gaming is different. Today you built character with already established END, and just add filler and filler. The Uoboros cycle will start again, when something at the start of your journey change, aka can be new sidekick or old sidekick gone into boss route. And since gaming is a norm and a CULTURE which easiest content hook for this generation, company just make these type of single player one with LOOTBox. Earlier in days people play video games to have fun and chatting, and less of money making. Today kids already learn about business -net-world on the young ages, they know ads, video editing and such. Company revolves around this kind of business since its a free money machine. Genshin is super lucky, while they did good job at release, they also support PC+Smartphone then Covid strike. They strike diamonds more than just money, they setting up a culture. So it can be said the thing that took them off from the ground is their release in weeb community is successful but also spiral into norm communities when the covid struck, most game do but genshin just spiral on a whole new level cause their blantly sell exclusivity. No Gucchi bag trend, but R5 C6 trend
can agree with it, i tried alot of mmos but as single player guy, it didnt work out of me.. until genshin impact got released, i tried it out after a week it got released and im playing this game daily to this day even too i grindend for everything that you could months ago, the weekly content update is making this game a blast even without paying a dime on this game btw f2p ftw
It's also why Final Fantasy 14 is really successful. It's a RPG first, MMO second. You still do plenty of things with other people but it's never competitive in any way outside of PvP and there really isnt much to miss out on if you dont play daily. It "respects the players time" by not having a bunch of essential daily stuff. The MMO aspect is mostly just doing cooperative things like dungeons and raids. The social aspect of the game is basically the usual social aspect of MMOs but very chill because there isnt competition between players.
I've actually gotten to see GC talk at a keynote prior to his announcement. He's very confident about the team he build as he said in the tweet and with with some praise. Gave some pretty insightful information and a few laughs during the keynote. No leaks doe lol
Indeed. But lets not forget, we're in a VERY different period. A new WoW will NEVER succeed nowadays. It has to be something new and well thought out. I think Ghostcrawler stepping down after (most likely) building the foundation of the MMO, will prevent the 'oh no, another WoW clone, ugh' issue. Because, you know, let's be real. The League of legends fanbase is far from liking a WoW game. Ghostcrawler leaving is a genius move because it gives space to creative minds bringing something new and (maybe) innovative. It is a risk, yes. But they have the resources to do so, and a new WoW is not a solution.
@@razzberrigashes ive been saying this for a while now...why were people excited about this dude? greg street is a cancer who destroys games, him leaving is probably a benefit to the project, but i didnt have high hopes for it anyways
Well his reasons for leaving are understandable last year he lost his brother and his father condition was really bad. Who knows if his father died as well. He wants to be closer to his family. Plus his job wasn't in game development it was to make the best team and lead them in a direction, if the team already have a roadmap I think it'll be alright
Lets go over why people leave their jobs: Nr 1 reason: they are "fired" either due to incompetence or conflict with leadership or their other more valuable colleagues Nr 2 reason: they dislike their bosses, so again, problem/conflicts with leadership Nr 3 reason: they get a promotion or simply switch their role. Nr 4 reason: they get more $$$ at a different company Nr 5: they retire Nr 6: they start their own business. While yes. this is speculation. Reasons 3 to 6 ain't a problem. Reason 1 and 2 might be a problem. Oh well, I personally didn't like the guy while I was playing LoL, most heroes he was involved in the design of were broken. Either to powerful or to weak. Never balanced or 'mid' so, whatever.
Every time you mention Riot MMO, you constantly compare it to WoW. I feel like you're too tunneled visioned and not imagining/thinking about the aspects of other mmorpgs. Guild wars 2, Maplestory, Lost Ark, Black Desert Online. Riot is heavily influenced by their eastern players, so I feel like the MMO will follow those styles and trends.
Classic WoW is still fun. Anyone who doesn't think so is too coked out on Valorant or something to just have a chill adventure game with friends. Makes me especially mad when people whine about world buff griefing or open world PVP. It's fun. That's what it's about. Rivalries with players on the other faction. People hit up Classic WoW and zerg all the raids and powergame all the gearing and chomp through all the content immediately and wonder why they didn't have fun. Because you were filling out a grocery list, not playing the game.
lol, the crazy mental gymnastics in trying to say GC leaving is not a bad thing or acting like if he had stayed on... and if the mmo progressed into production, seemingly saying that GC wouldn't be the lead dev in charge of everything. Also how are people ignoring potential issues like the new lead dev isn't going to bring in their own ideas or the development team losing the direction GC set up? ideas that could easily counter what GC set up and what many people were excited for with this mmo. and of course his leaving tweet said stuff like "the mmo is in good hands", literally PR 101 on a farewell message. How are people blindly eating that up and acting as if there is literally nothing wrong with GC leaving (putting aside the sad circumstances, that's another matter) and acting like the MMO won't be affected negatively by the literal lead dev leaving the project? if he left behind this so-called "amazing team that will perfectly handle development", why has no replacement lead dev been announced? there are so many examples of a lead dev leaving development == bad game released, so why would this be an exception? and people acting like this game has been in development for so long so it's fine for him to leave, yet nothing backs that up and in fact they probably haven't even started real production yet.
I mean either way it’s probably gonna be like, half a decade before we see the MMO. I don’t see the point in getting upset about whether a game that releases that far off is going to be good or bad. Might as well try to predict 2028’s political landscape. When we get more info about the project, then maybe we can start speculating/panicking. But for now, it’s still too far off
It was already way far off even before he left, so no difference there haha. I think he did what he had to do for the MMO team, which he built up. He mostly did what he had to do before leaving. 2028 sounds likely yes.
Max level should be achieved after 3years of playing 24/7. Totaly NOT agreeing with most things you said about the community and evolvement of those games.
i hope on a mix of the 2 worlds. the old school where time is spend. and the new, with quick sections. i hope raids are still like old school. but there are also mytic dungeons with same quality gear. just let the raid have the better glamour to compesate time invested. with BiS needing both.
Can we expect any more Genshin content on the main channel? I saw you went through a lot of the game, maybe on update on what you think about the story telling, lore and worl-building?
unless riot starts churning out stories and or other news, it’s highly unlikely he won’t cover genshin again at some point as he branched out due to the lack of league content
When Ghostcrawler led WoW we saw its golden years of PvP. When he left, PvP and class design tanked. Despite his reassurances I have lost a lot of hope for the game.
100% dead. This is already a game that will come in 5+ years and we are seeing shit like this already, nah. We have years of case scenarios about stuff like this...
I disagree. Wow went down the toilet when he left. League went down the toilet when he left. I think he is one of the few people in the video game community with vision, competence, integrity, and morality. I think without him to guide the ship the game will be much worse. Honestly I am no longer excited on this news alone.
i love new mmo game design: cash shop, season pass, party finder so u dont need to communicate, repetitive gameplay to loot same currency over and over again, no class with unique personalities
man i wish i could play the mmo, i have stage3 bronchus cancer and i dont have much time in this world. hope i could atleast see a gameplay before i go
I've never been attacked so hard by a date before because I remember when AOE2 came out. I was so hype. Then you hit me with clippy???? Honestly fu Necrit lmao I know it'll never happen, but I hope one day we can an MMO with a similar skill mechanics to Guild Wars 1. Tab combat is whatever, but the skills system was amazing and you could actually make a build that only you use.
When one of the Dev Literally Said that which his history is Character Designs (Customization)/Story Development then the Whole team go We Should do Characters Gacha so Every Characters is playable and payables, So He say "the Development Team is in good hand"👌
I honestly kinda hope it isn't much of an mmo-focused mmo... I don't have friends that will join me to play it and I am incapable of making friends so if it is focused on that style of gameplay I probably won't be able to enjoy it
I'm confident Riot will find a new Executive producer that perhaps can fill the shoes of Ghostcrawler. I trust their judgement to grab themselves another elite producer with tons of experience under their belt.
Dont mind him leaving, the last thing Riot MMORPG needs imho is ranked PvP with gear stats and WoW is one of few (if not the only one) big MMORPG that still sticks with it so him leaving can mean bigger chance for no gear PvP in the game.
The thing with direction is... people can lose it. You don't drop the steering wheel in the middle of a road just because you already set the direction.
I hope if there's a gunner/ranger class... and people use those ranged weapons, that we actually have to aim where we shoot. If that were the case I'd finally be able to convince one of my friends to try an mmo.
Honestly. A, good for him if it's to get closer to family. B, Ghostcrawlers career on WoW was a mix of ups and downs so this may not be a net negative.
7:39 no, Blizzard just doesnt know how to recreate classic mmo game design. The problem is not classic mmo design, the problem is devs dont know how to recreate it in a healthy way without ruining the fun, having to set aside 4 hour raid time is perfectly fine, if you cant do that, thats a you issue. not a problem with the game itself, and people want quick 30 minute sessions nowadays? hehehe..hahahah WRONG No one logs onto a fuckin mmo to play for 30 minutes, its not designed for that and it never will be, We log on to play for HOURS, because when you play an mmorpg you are LOOKING for the type of game you sit in for several hours at a time, It makes zero sense to assume that spending lots of time on a game per day = bad design, it doesnt, its good design, it keeps the game healthy, old mmo design works, Modern mmo doesn't. Why does modern mmo design not work? because the content is meaningless and a sludge, and treated like a chore, and not fun at all. Old mmo design works and will always work because you're not forced to do stupid shit to maximize the fun out of the game, you do what you want and content is treated with respect, and dignity.
Bruv, they're making an MMO, the genre that is the most expensive & takes the longest time to initially develop even longer if you want an incredible one. It's always been a massive undertaking. Riot announced their goal to make an MMO in 2019 with every year since being dedicated to plan & map out everything they're going to do + assembling the team that'll work on it, that's why there isn't a single artwork or reveal trailer for the game, it's still in the concept phase. (Unlike Project L for example, that's in active production hence the few dev videos we got showing off the core idea of the game but still isn't close enough for an official trailer yet) If they truly are beginning production now then that's good sign that development is proceeding at a smooth pace. The core of idea and plan of the title is polished, with the base systems they're going to use to develop the game ready. Anywhere between 2026-2028 is a somewhat realistic release window for the launch.
Alot of people put ghostcaller as part of the downfall of WoW sooo might be a good thing :P he joined WoW and then it went down hill right afterwards soooo coincident or his fault who knows.
