Rip currents are among the leading causes of surf injuries along America's coastlines. Learning to identify rip currents is important safety skill for swimmers, surfers and ocean enthusiasts to learn. Scientists from the UNC Coastal Studies Institute and Kill Devil HIlls Ocean Rescue recently used flourescein dye to track rip currents within the surf zone.

That slowness is very deceptive. This only shows how the dye travels through the current and that the current actually is there, the force exerted against a person, especially a moderate swimmer, is substantial. Fantastic video.

Eff, I almost drown in one of these when a friend and I went swimming in Lake Michigan on a red flag day. I swam out too far to help my friend get to where he could touch, and next thing I know I’m being pulled away from shore further and further, my strength diminishing by the second. First time I felt I would die if someone did not save me. Someone did save me. I didn’t know what red flag meant. My friends “knew” but they didn’t really KNOW. Many occurrences like this in early adulthood has made me addicted to the truth and to making sure for myself. I do not just take someone’s word for pretty much anything. Most people cannot be trusted.
@inquisitvem6723
@inquisitvem6723 Год назад
Doesn’t it eventually stop pulling you out though, so a good swimmer with endurance will eventually swim back to shore? Also if you have a life jacket on, you’re all set right? Some I heard will swim sideways to get out of it.

Can you disclose the amount of fluorescein that was used for this? I'm considering to carry a small vial of it when scuba diving, and it would be great to know what amount creates such an effect. Of course "more is better", but there's no need to overdo it... ;-)

I kinda enjoy them and other currents you can experience in the ocean. If you can relax and realize that you aren't going to beat the current swimming directly at it and can collect your thought process without freaking out, and can just remain calm, you are just trying to figure out the puzzle. I grew up being in the water and being a competitive swimmer, I have been a beach lifeguard and I can tell you by experience that most people have horrible swimming abilities, add in almost any negative situation to their already limited abilities and you will get a drowning, or someone in need of rescue, where some will excel and be perfectly fine, others will falter and fail, it all comes down to preparation and remaining calm. What is the first rule in any survival situation? Remain calm, those who can remain calm will most likely survive their ordeal if they can keep a level head.
@candii10
@candii10 Месяц назад
Question: in addition to remaining calm, if you happen to be a subpar swimmer, does it make sense to just float and trust that you will be deposited back on the shore or simply swim parallel to the shore?
