I have only one memory. Some stranger was onewheeling past me as I was biking and I shouted, “cool onewheel!” He replied, “thanks! Wanna try it?” I don’t think I’ve ever spun around so quickly in my life. He let me ride it up and down the street for about 10 minutes. I’m now looking to get one but can’t decide between the pint x and the gt. What do you like so much about the xr over the pint x? And would you opt for a gt over a pint x for your first board? Is that board size more comfortable to ride?
Good to know that the GT has a non standard tire. I live in hawaii, and shipping my XR one wheel is probably like $300 there, and $300 back…. So that’s a phat “no go” for me 🤣 right to repair 100% 👊🏽
They can avoid the liability of injury easily due to modding. What they might have trouble with, is curbing the negative image associated due to injury. What FM should do, is focus away from C&D on 3rd party, embrace them, and then go after litigation that’s slowly creeping in to ban these on trails. Focus on educating and promoting them positively for the trail riders.
Future motion is asking for a lot of hassle if they make new boards un-repairable outside of their hands. Speaking from inside the PEV community, its best to let the people do what they do best, fix. From there you can progress your innovation tremendously quicker. Future motion has acted very Apple for years now and it has left a stain on their rep. A lot of this has to be the fact that they are not a Chinese company and have to deal with liability issues. Also, nice Eevee's shirt with the V12. They sent me a V12 to show Toronto this past summer. I'll DM you when the crew is headed your way this coming summer 🤙🏻
I feel like we both share the same view of the XR. I’ve ridden on beaches in the rain. I’ve taken my board on hiking trails and lost it over a cliff side. It’s taken me to surf spots nobody else would spend time getting to. It’s helped me get to the front of a line of a traffic and help clear an accident off the road that nobody else was helping with (not even police). I can carry my dog on it. I can carry a surfboard or hydrofoil with a free hand to drink or do anything with. I shop with it daily. I let kids try it. I let elderly people try it. I commute to work on it. Everybody just loves this thing. It’s opened up a part of the world that walking/running/skating just can’t and slows things down enough that you just can’t in a car. The GT is cool. But it’s very expensive. And if I need to go 30 miles, I’d get a bike or car. 20 miles is already plenty. And yes a Pint X is $400 cheaper than a XR. And guess what’s $400 more than an XR? A GT. They’re smart to do this. As for suing companies for modding, just let them. They’re gonna do it regardless. If your product needs modifications to make someone happy, let them. If your product is perfect and doesn’t needs mods, cool. But even the “perfect” product will get modified. So just let it be.
The vast majority of litigation against FM (including the massive class action) is not at all related to 3rd party modified boards. It is brand new folks who get a Onewheel thinking it's a fun toy that anyone can ride out of the box and not a legit boardsport. They don't read the manual, ignore safety warnings, go 20+mph, skip their skull off the ground, and get seriously injured and/or die.
Oh you are definitely right about that! (apologies for not making that more clear). I feel terrible for those families but from what I've read about the situations I really don't think FM is at fault and I don't imagine they will lose the lawsuits. In general I hate how obsessed with lawsuits the culture in the US seems to be, and thats both coming from FM and towards FM. I just hope so bad that they don't go the way of Boosted, but if lawsuits keep getting thrown at them for injuries I'm afraid that will happen.
@@TheFloatLife I used to carry their business cards in my wallet and pass them around to people who showed interest in my board and tried it out. OneWheel needs to embrace their community because we are there for them. I feel like they have gotten a bit of a big head in the last year or so.
love my XR as well. I got infected at Peters and Mattis videos and I agree... Thats the best purchase since I bought my first drone back in 2015. Damn, that last shot wasn't necessary :D haha
I hope I get to at some point! Maybe a v13 will be the best of both worlds between the v11 and v12! Now that winter is here in Canada I don’t think I’ll get to do much PEV testing unfortunately, unless it’s a sweet fat bike or something.
@@JesseDriftwood some say the "V13" will likely be a bigger wheel & targeted to the hi speed enthusiasts. the V12 seems to be the best all around EUC to date & many of us would Love it to have suspension to make it the Ultimate 16" wheeled EUC
@@JesseDriftwood There are some EUC with offroad tires that are good for winter riding and some people do ride them year-round, like Veteran Sherman EUC has great water resistance and a knobby tire. Personally getting my ks 16x tire studded for the winter though.
I agree 100%. The XR is the most customizable onewheel money can buy and probably will be for some years. Well.. Until 3rd party companies can workaround it. But for now, everyone in GTs will have the latest tech.. But they'll all look the same. Infact, from the non riders, they can hardly tell the difference between pint, pint x and gt. Their form factor does appear similar unless you get the treaded wheel with the carbon fender to get that ultimate sleek tesla futuristic onewheel look for the gt. But outside that... The XR will be king in terms of overall usage. I can't see myself hitting tricks with the GT. I feel it's gonna be too heavy, pretty, too many things that could go wrong and not to mention that firmware in it to prevent modding... Lol. I respect what future motion is doing but people will always find a workaround. It's just a matter of time. But until then folks, GET UP IN DAT XR! It will never die. It's like that old camero that people just keep cherishing, fixing and modding in the garage to make it their own.. It'll never die. It's too revolutionary. From what I know... The XR with the right firmware (4209) is still the best onewheel because you can turn it into something greater than the GT.... You can get more range and about equal in torque with the tire change and bumper change to lessen weight.. I hope future motion really has something special in store for us that they haven't talked about in that gt. Only time will tell. But if you're on the fence for an XR... Get it if you can. You won't regret it, it's far from obsolete. Great video as usual!
I literally could not agree more about the XR. I have the original pint, put 800ish miles on it and was in a position to buy an XR. I still own both. 56 years old and I cannot imagine needing to "upgrade" to a gt or pintx. Long live my vintage onewheels!
I appreciate the reminder that I paid for Canva Pro for a reason and I need to use it more and for the lack of shoes in this video (not in a weird foot-thing kind of way...maybe should have left the last part out)
I LOVE riding my Onewheel in sandals. Although I can't say I ride often straight barefoot. Still get nervous though cause dropping in sandals is not ideal.
This is the same as a car, everyone has the right to mod it and they're liable for things breaking or causing accidents. And insurance (in this case warranty) won't cover it if it's been opened. All future motion has to do is what every other manufacturer does, put a void sticker on a bolt and state warranty mileage, 2000 maybe? When the tire needs to be replaced.. or more if they're willing to work with shops that sell their board to offer a certified tire service
@@chrisc790 I love mine but I did get a electric-unicycle and now I can ride 60-70 miles per charge. Now I love both, I do ride the onewheel alot less now.
Really loving your content lately. I have never used a Onewheel and never intend to (way too accident prone), but this video was still incredibly enjoyable. Cool!
The thing with RTR is, the manufacturer can literally take steps to make repairs easier and safer. Yes, the users can still screw up, but the amount of dumb people who will literally be careless about fixing a PEV, is very low. Companies should stop being anti RTR. If they don't want to accommodate RTR at least they should not go out of their way to stop people from doing so
Exactly! Repair can be made extremely simple and safe. It’s one of the reasons I love the little motorcycle that I daily.. it’s about as mechanically simple as a vehicle can be and most aren’t much more complicated. I, with many others have always done my own maintenance on my bikes and never had any safety issues. People understand the importance of doing the job properly and will generally find someone who can if they aren’t comfortable with it. Except for mounting tires.. screw that lol. I’ll swap out wheels but I’m bringing it to a shop for the actual mounting.
Sometimes I"m like... "Why does this filmmaker with a channel about making videos make videos about 1 wheels?" Then I scroll down and find no affiliate links for it. Maybe he just... likes them? Anyways, despite not being interested in 1 wheels I still watch them because you've got great style and you're a blast to watch. Thanks for the great videos no matter what you're making them about.
bc ppl shoot on one wheels rather than wasting thousands on dolly carts and save their budget. maybe learn how to ride one if you're so into filmmaking cuz tbh idk how anyone would get these long ass tracking shot one takes like i do without them.
@@SHVWNCOOPER Hey Shawn, thanks for the reply, I hadn't thought of that. Makes a lot of sense, I've used office chairs and skateboards and bicycles and everything else to get those sorts of shots... Anyways, I didn't mean to be negative, it was more pleasant surprise because so many videos's content on youtube seem driven by something they're trying to sell in the affiliate links below (which is also fair enough, if they're taking the time to make free content for the internet, power to them if they're able to make a living from it). So to see Jesse just talking about one wheels because he's passionate about them is cool. Thanks for the reply.- Eric
@@EricBates i will say this with bias bc i hate RU-vidrs like jess'es friend peter - always advertising something we don't need, to ppl that can't afford it, from someone who didn't spend shit on it - that's telling you you need to use it from a "filmmakers" pov who aren't even really shooting or editing their own work. i kinda trust jesse's ingenuity. from a onewheel perspective - its def dangerous, however, it's priceless for what you can shoot with it. you can use skateboards, but then you're going to get a bounce in your shot. you can use a boosted board, but then you're not going to hop the curb on it and continue tracking your shot. i had to get one and learn how to ride and shoot on it in less than a week but i made an obstacle course on my roof and youtubed it. it's possible. overpriced, yes. i'd get one used IMO. but i'd def invest in one again.
Honestly one of the hardest parts about making a living on RU-vid (for me personally anyway!) is trying to do it in a way that isn't just telling people to buy shit they don't need. Particularly when I have a constant stream of companies sending me offers to promote products and it would be so much easier to just say yes and pretend it doesn't hurt anyone, but I can't do that! I won't pretend to be perfect in this area, and I'll still need to promote some products and services from time to time to pay the bills, but I hope that in general the tone of my channel never becomes "you need more more more".
@@JesseDriftwood I can imagine. Thanks for the personalized response, and all the great videos. Hope you find a balance between your integrity and paying the bills that you're comfortable with, I imagine it's a constant battle. Keep it up!
The XR looked really fun and I thought "ya, I can do that!" so my husband talked me into one (because I hemmed and hawed about it). We got one about a month before the new one was announced, he's bitter about it because he really researched it and they said in all the videos he could find that it was "it" and no others were coming out. Well, I blew my knee out on the first weekend and it's his now. Oh well, you guys make it look so easy. BTW, my knee had a torn ACL from a long time ago so I don't know what I was thinking. LOL
I actually bought the XR during black Friday sale at the lower $1499 price. I still think it's better than the pint x. Sorry if that's not popular opinion 😆
Little do you know that was your husband's plan all along. Haha but in all seriousness I am super sorry to hear that you injured yourself. I always love to show strangers the board and let them ride it if they take interest. But I am always worried somebody is going to get hurt! If you can, don't give up on it! I know it's hard with an injury, but once you get the hang of it and as long as you respect it, they really are quite safe (assuming there isn't some super random failure or something). Anyway, hope you are feeling better and hopefully at least your husband is getting some shredding on it.
I'm *sooo GLAD* i ordered mine 3 days ago ! I've been wanting an XR for ages and learning that they're now getting discontinued makes me super grateful that i didn't miss out ! #BLESSED
I like my xr more than all the others too. I would say i like my gt more but it wont stop breaking so im just gonna put the GTV in it and if it breaks again ill just sell it cuz im over it
Well said, The one thing I would like to see is a competitive product. Maybe a Tesla onewheel, or an Apple onewheel, Segway onewheel. This I believe would keep prices out of low earth orbit. Also if future motion would make the XR or GT in business friendly states (Texas or Florida) they could cut the price in half. As it is the onewheel is a rich boys toy or old (with money) like me.
Woah! You're getting great at that V12 rather quickly! I'm glad you're getting good at it before doing a full review. Also, glad that sweater fits 👀. Looking good Jesse! Also, thanks for speaking about right to repair. Cheers!
@@JesseDriftwood I think that’s what most people come from Onewheeling originally think. I almost gave up my first week haha. I can’t wait to see the full review.
I want one, just scared ...lol ... riding skateboards from the 80s and 90s is not the same as the One Wheel ... at 45 years old I may break a hip or something :)
54 and need both my knees replaced, bought my XR on black friday and while I can not ride more than a couple of miles its a blast to just cruise around.
I'll ride my XRs till I run out of parts to swap out. The growler set up is still my favorite trick board configuration, and WTF rails for trails. It would be interesting to see the aftermarket innovations to come out for the GT, but that would take a while to mature.
@@JesseDriftwood yep! And giving this board to my son when my GT arrives I've changed every tire on this board, five of them.. First one I didn't plug footpad in correctly and it dropped me at 15 mph😄 I've crashed in every way possible and I still love it. I do understand though their hesitation for people modifying.. I'm perfect example of doing out wrong. Although I'd never sue. Anyways, float safe. Spring will be here in no time🤙🏽
I love the GT's range and speed but the steps that future motion is taking to make it harder for people to fix/repair their boards just so you have to over pay them for something you've already spent over £1k (or dollars) on is just insane to me, that's why I'm staying with my XR. (I know a lot of people will disagree but I like the squared off tire, I feel more stable)
Future Motion products are good, but they could be more exciting, and have more variety - if they had any need to compete with other companies making similar devices.
We should be aloud to repair our OW if we bought them, however, if an injury and/or death happens BECOUSE somebody modded a OW it shouldn't be on the compony, but the modder. Having a OW shouldn't feel like a rental, but more of what it is, something that you bought and own, therefore, something that you can do whatever you please with.
Is there a diffrent buying a new xr vs a old one? I Mean in build... Are they are just the same as one from 3 years old? Beceaus I am gonne order one for sure! But I can buy also one from 2 years old with 115km on it. Any suggestions? Thanks! Super dope video! This gonne be my 1st board but I am super stoked for the xr!
I have 5500 miles on my XR. I absolutely love it. I got it when I was 48 I am now 52 do not get one of these. If you did not spend your youth like I did skateboarding and surfing, it’s not a matter of if you’re gonna fall is when you’re gonna fall…. To me I jump right back up and keep going. It’s a good life lesson in general to me is the best therapy in the world. Why are you ask if you want to be safe it requires your undivided attention you start to daydream it will bite you, so why ride my Onewheel for safety reasons lol the world goes away and I concentrate on what I’m doing with that being said this right to modify or write to fix to me is very simple just my opinion my two cents if you decide to take some thing that is incredibly dangerous and you choose to modify it in any way, shape or form you should be able to do so, but I would like to see laws implemented across the board that if you loosen one screw if you touch one wire future motion is not legally responsible for anything this way, the MacGyver us can do their thing and the rest of us can keep enjoying future products by future motion, not having to go out of business, because of people that somehow coordinate that writing something dangerous that they choose to do themselves somehow makes future motion responsible that just does not make sense in my world . Use your safety gear…. Keep your head on a swivel….. my stepfather taught me a great lesson when I started driving, he said” you do not look any better in a coffin if you had the right of way” 💯😉☝🏼🏁
I totally agree with the previous comment. If you don’t live in the US then future motion has to open up repair shops in every country in the world, which they will never do. Frankly, I think it’s just pure greed.
I'm a little pissed bout the new oneweels. They look like over manufacturered garbage. Onewheel xr is prefect! I would have preferred them keeping the xr form factor and maybe adding slightly better range and waterproof. Don't get me wrong all oneweels are fun but the xr is where its @ God forbid if one day I'm forced to buy one of the toy looking ones.
Funny story: I've been watching you for a while and on the verge of getting a OneWheel. Two months ago I had some extra cash and decided to go for it and bought an XR+, love it, but now I am kicking my ass for not having waited just a bit longer and buying the GT. Oh well.... I still love the XR!
I JUST went and bought a new XR over a GT today. So don't feel bad. I think you lucked out. The GT honestly seems like a complete mess and this is coming from somebody who owns two OneWheels and they are my favorite things I've ever spent money on besides my Bed.
S my right to repair one wheel story. without going too much into it had to send my XR in for repair error 23 witch makes ur board shut off mid-ride. Not fun. anyways after the repair was done I asked if I could buy a set of new rails they let me but would not send back my old ones you know the ones I already paid for. To me, that's BS like come on so got new rails and they kept my old ones
I really dig the color of those rail guards. All I can find is fluorescent yellow guards, but that doesn't sound like the right color to me. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Why would you put stock future motion bumpers on though? I mean, I made that mistake once then I bought half a dozen sets of Bangs. I also have the Fangs front bumper on a couple boards, bangs minis 2.1 on another. Point is, why praise the aftermarket community, but then not support them by using their superior upgrades? ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
You’re probably right here! The truth is I’ve never had any issues with bumpers on any of my boards, so I just kind of purchased this set without much of a thought. My next upgrade will be to fully overwhaul my GT with TFL parts. Going WTF rails, maybe5” hub too. Time will tell!
i don't have one yet but its 2024 and i have ben looking for a while and a dude let me ride his xr and gt and i noticed the sensory issue once i tried to activate it
You along with Pete, Matti, and Levi are the reason I bought my XR and I couldn’t agree more with everything you said in this video! Did you badger your board? Or have you just been sending it through the water as is? Haha. Love the video bro.
Calling the XR obsolete is like calling an early 2000s car obsolete because the new model has a ton of new features that leave it in the dust. But they both get you A to B, right?
I get a lot of angry gay people in my inbox every time I post one of my one wheel videos. they seem to only endorse straight white guys. i need it for shooting but i covered up the logos cuz i'm sick of hearing it so if you're in touch with the brand and want it to keep it forward, maybe tell them it's 2022 inclusivity should be apart of their marketing strategy.
Oh damn I haven't heard that from anyone before (though maybe thats no surprised based on what I look like) but that sucks! I did just skim through the marketing materiel on their website and it seemed pretty diverse to me, maybe thats not what people are talking about though?
@@JesseDriftwood yeah i got a video in my dms where they went down the grid it was mostly white guys. lol. i think it was more the STRAIGHT aspect. i'm in Brooklyn - we've got defund the police murals on either end of the block and the police station is across the street ppl stay mad now lol
Love your channel! I've been riding a Pint for a month, already modded it with a GT40mod, range is excellent, about 28 km in 12 C°.... but I bought a low milage XR today... I don't have much money to spend or something, I wanted to buy an other car (less old :D ), but whatever. You live once, OneWheel is more exciting than an other car. :D Hell yeah! :D
do you know what really sucks im 12 and i just got my first onewheel a couple days ago and then they say its discontinued like i mean i already got really comfortable on it and its my favorite onewheel board and when it breaks i cant fix it and then i cant get my onewheel that really sucks im really sad about this
