RIP St Arnicca - jumps racing's latest victim 

I spent many years in the horseracing industry. I rode track of a morning, I attended race meetings. I later left as I wanted to learn more of what goes on behind the scenes in the Thoroughbred Industry and worked on some very well known N.S.W studs. Life for the horses though quieter, in the paddocks, is still not the life of luxury people imagine it to be. Mares straight off the track are injected to bring them into season and jumped by the randy stallion chosen for her whether she likes it or not, she will be forced to stand for the stallion. Gone is the nice warm rugs and the protective stall, she's lean and fit, possibly clipped and thrown out into the paddock with other mares, where she has to find her place in the pecking order. If it's summer it's not so bad but if it's autumn and the nights are getting cooler, she's going to feel it. Some older mares are given kerosene douches. Yes, a petroleum by product of approximately 4 litres is inserted deep into their vagina 😖The "experts", yes the vets and stud managers call this "improve the tone of the uterus" .... Like WOW they're expecting life to take hold in there after that? I was confounded, I was the one who had to clean up the mess left behind as it scolded the mares down their vulva and thighs as it worked it's way out days later. I asked a particular stud manager once if he was going to have that done to his wife as they were trying to have a baby? Apparently I was being ridiculous and should watch my smart mouth. I was there as the pre & postnatal foal carer, among other roles, with the weaners, yearlings and took care of the stallions when they were poorly. Had more common sense been used the stallions would never have their complaints. At stud, the mares do spend the larger part of their time out in the paddock, but, when ever a human was near them it was to stick something, in them, down them or up them. No wonder some became nasty, then their foals were taken once they were taught to lead and handle. But that's ok she's pregnant with another and the cycle continues.

Utterly Disgusting!!! That poor horse - Horses carry them self proudly; that poor horse is in a lot of pain and the way it is hobbling along breaks my heart.

Thank you for bringing awareness to this cruel discipline. Disgusting how some people ignore death & rather focus on winning & money over a living beings life.

This is disgusting that poor horse why do they still do this it’s just disgusting and I understand that you can win money but the fact that your horse is going through this it’s like they don’t show love to these horses at all moral is that your putting your horse through this whipping and a bunch of injuries falling on their head and hooves being taken off and more in plus your horse could die from this so is that money really worth it what if your costs a lot more money and love than the money just pls stop horse racing!❤

Why every time at least one breaks a leg

It is always sad and disturbing when a horse loses its life on the track. But those who talk about animal cruelty in horse racing know nothing about the sport. It is NOT purely about gambling. These horses are loved and cared for much better than many (in fact, MOST) people treat their own pets. I know this first hand. The celebrations that were being held after the race in question were done before anyone even knew about the tragic demise of St Arnicca, so to call that into context is ludicrous. Also note that the incident was actually caused by the horse losing its footing on the flat, and was not a result of jumping any obstacle.
