Ripley (2024) | Series Review 

Could not agree more, Andrew Scott is my favorite version of Ripley. I always liked Alain Delon in Purple Noon, 1960 and Matt Damon, 1999, The Talented Mr Ripley. The Netflix Series is my favorite version.

Several characters/ incidents in Minghella’s film did not come from Patricia Highsmith. Cate B character, the Italian pregnancy, the ending killing were all added. Ripley is very true to the book apart from the Caravaggio thread. Steve Zaillian also wrote American Gangster, Gangs of New York but is best known for his Oscar winning screenplay of Schindler’s List. The series does not have a Netflix feel because it was made by Showtime who, I read, sold it to Netflix for a song. Glad you are loving it.

Anthony Minghella's movie is not the original. The original is 1960's Plein Soleil (Purple Noon) with Alain Delon. A classic.

You are off your rocker!!

I have found it a grind. (and I am a person who can enjoy talking about Last Year in Marienbad with a glass of chilled white wine in my hand and la di da). In the book Ripley is a funny song and dance man who does witty mime theatrics for Dickie and they go to Naples and Rome and get drunk and are laughing and have arms round each others' shoulders...quite a different thing. Every single character in this version is downbeat and well above 7 on the morose scale. Italian people are, largely, full of vida la vida and fun. Arrrgh. I love Andrew Scott's acting but I feel there comes a point when for some reason we automatically have to salute a great actor like him, or whoever, even if their performance seems a bit lacklustre. Maybe I read too much Dickens at school. I love the book though. (and Tony Minghella's fim)

It will be great if you could respect the series and everyone involved by calling it “Ridley”, the actual name of the series instead of using the name of a movie that used the same source material.
