I did do a ensuite for someone. becasue i did it from scratch i used a tanking kit. customer already bough hardie backer boards, although ott. I also used the no leaks seal kit around the perimeter of the tray before tiles went on. that way if water ever got past the tiles then it would find its way back in the tray. if i ever do a bathroom or shower I will always use a tanking kit. the tiles just need a fraction of a gap to allow water in, same as with end feed fitting (capillary action).

I would also check that there is a silicon joint at the bottom of the wall profile where it meets the tray.. I know it’s a pain to get the door out and reseal it again, but it’s the most common error most fitters make. The water runs down the inside of the wall profile and pours down the back of the tray.. That’s why you should only seal the outside of the profile as they’re generally designed to let the water drain back into the tray at the bottom. Might be worth a look if it still leaks before you have to rip it out..🤷🏼‍♂️
@MJTiffPlumbing

Yep that’s how a shower screen should be fitted….. however removing this screen can’t be done with the toilet and basin vanity units in place, so it all has to come out to do that…… as said in the video👍🏼

I would double check the door seal. I had a similar issue a couple of years ago. Checked everything. Resealed everything. Turned out the water was seeping through the door frame running below as the grouting was done after some plonker stuck the cubical on. I can see that the basin is almost stuck tight to that cubical. It's also best checking if you get another leak that it's not seeping out from the frame and under that vanity unit via the wastes and pipes coming up from the floor.

I have used “Classi seal tape on showers and baths for years. I have never had a leak in any installations. You stick it to the edge of the tray before installing, it has a black bitumen type adhesive to stick a blue rubber upstand to the tray and I use a wallpaper edge roller to get a perfect seal. The tiles fit over the rubber upstand and hey presto……a perfectly waterproof joint.

Thanks, Mark, for another, but dear-ree me....that was quite shocking. The original fitter had made an error in laying it all, albeit a minor one possily, and then did little to nothing to remedy it, as to do it properly meant to him to take out the tray at his own expense. As for the 2nd guy....got to be kidding me. That plastic edging was comical, not even sealed, and the gap it exposed made no sense in the process where it was suppose to trap the water from escaping!! And £900 for 1 HOUR??!! With that rubbish that look to have taken something near to 25 mins...they should report him to Trading Standards. Doing it properly WITH the edging should be about £75-£100, especially for 1 hour. and that's IF that's found to be the issue, as there could be elsewhere that's leaking (I'll explain later on). I don't condone the silicone on the tiles but see their logic. What should have happened was exactly what you did; put the water directly on the waste, then the tray, then the tiles individually. Seems whoever went gung-ho and hoped for the best, because even after all of that, neither the original fitter (on his 2nd visit) nor the 2nd guy could have ran the water to test it. With the original fitter, with the issue starting 8 months after installation, something has worn away to allow that water through, and he would have had a better idea of what is the cause with the knowledge of how it was fitted and tested. It could be the case the original fitter did test it after and it looked good then, only for the issue to appear 8 months later. Easier said than doe, but once you've laid a tray step-by-step, and each step is checked well, that each stage is completed good and strong, there should be little to no issues.

Personally if I was called out to that job I would have also removed the shower screen. The reason for that is because the seal behind the screen can break down and water will run where the screen, tiles, tray meets. With just sealing the tray and tiles you’re not getting to the rest of it like you would from a new installation. I would also always fit a shower tray with upstands like the Mira flight, so the tiles go into the tray or in worse case if the tray size wasn’t available with upstands always fit the sealing tape kit from Plumb Center. I’ve heard of trade man pricing the job to the house price and I think they should be named and shamed. One painter on a transit forum would see how much the house has gone up and how much rent was being paid ( if rented ) and charged accordingly. Personally I used to charge a set amount and it never made any difference to the house I used to be working at.

I am surprised there's been no inspection of the riser kit and floor below. I have seen instances like this where the subfloor is rotten below and allowing the tray to move thus causing the silicone to split. Also behind the screen needs inspecting as that is the most common place to not be sealed / leaking from in my opinion.

Only way to fit the tray so it doesn’t leak is to start the tiling from the floor up then drop the tray in after ,then silicone the gap between the tiles and tray , no movement when someone is showing and the silicone seal doesn’t move or shrink 55 year in the trade

@@MJTiffPlumbing Agree, All the Tray manufacturers instructions I've ever seen actually tell you not to fit a tray onto a wall tiled past the tray, it's always fit tray, bonded with silicone to the wall(s), seal joints of tray to wall, then tile and seal again between tile and tray, also the Quality and type of silicone used is important, use a good quality trusted brand and use acetoxy silicone.

The whole issue with cowboy trades people is there is no regulations to prevent them from setting up and working. We should have a permit and licensing system in place to try and stamp this out. Issued by an official source and have been assessed in their field of expertise. Reviewed either annually, 3 or 5 yearly. Yes it adds cost but it could reduce the number of cowboys out there. Discuss

Oh my word! My 8 year old boy could have glued that plastic trim in better than that, and he would have done it for half the price 😂🤣 But the big question is, "WHY"? Why would anyone even think of putting that stuff on a shower tray? He used two or three times the silicone needed to reseal the tray (maybe more), and completely F-ed up a simple job. I really wish a lot more of these "Cowboy's" could be "Named and Shamed".
