Well mate, I was bloody interested to see the results, and I anticipated a much greater difference in the outcomes. Objectively, I thought that your methodology and execution were well conceived and even handed for the comparisons. Crikey, you look like the bloke on your computer, though...That's enough crap out of me, I'm full of it... Stay nice...

Wooly, I believe the the main difference between the chains come down to the finish cut in ripping, a standard “fire wood” cabin doesn’t need to be a smoother cut, while a “ ripping” chain looks to minimize the surface preparation for fine woodworking. So without seeing the cuts, we cannot fully determine the benefits of one over the other!
@WoolysWorld
@WoolysWorld 3 года назад
Of course man, but which is faster for ripping firewood?

Thanks for this Wools👍🏻 Like others were saying, the finish is supposedly smoother on the ripping chain. I’ll be honest, I never could tell much of a difference either way, so I just stick with a full comp/full chisel chain on my saws.

Your looking at the ripping chain in the wrong manor and using it in the wrong manor....to do a fair comparison of how a ripper chain is used such as making lumber stand the fire wood on end and cut downwards the wood chips from a ripping chain when working properly will be fine sawdust...not shreds....think of it as how you would rip planks from a log

@jackylsmith8138

You are not ripping. You are noodling. Ripping makes boards going down the length of the log. You are just cutting across. Stand your round up and cut down to see the difference.

Ok i use a ripping chain sharp and made by me commercial style means professional tree workers and large cuts .is important to understand that speed on that chain when is cutting is crucial . So if you to concern about pushing your chainsaw because mi get damaged just cut whit regular chain .The ripping sharpening is to take the load of the engine when cutting and take large peaces of shaving and less wood dust that clog the passage of oil to the bar and cut a 10% faster no more and make you chainsaw have a longer usefull life that is all .if you buy ripping chains made by the wrong companies you get nothing just the name ripping they dont know squat about cutting whit a chainsaw and Oregon is one of them

Don’t know how much difference it would make, but what if you tried rotating the logs up so that you are coming down the center line of the trunk as if you were milling slabs

@@WoolysWorld I think the idea has less to do with cutting time and more to do with keeping the saw running at higher rpms and not stressing the motor as much on long sustained thick cuts where the more aggressive chains are gonna bog down

You probably aren't using a rip chain. Standard chain is meant for crosscut or going perpendicular to the grain. Rip chain is meant for going with the grain and is made for milling lumber.

Woody I noticed that with the ripping chain it seemed like you were plugging the output of the saw dust noodles so it was having to bring him all the way around to get rid of them in that chamber where the drive clutch is I see that maybe it needs to be modified so it will get rid of that cut material
@WoolysWorld

That's a really good observation, I did think that myself, you can get wider clutch covers that let more saw dust through

Yes, normally ripping a log with a chain saw is done from the end grain, since the log is generally far longer than the length of the bar. I wish these two chain types were compared using the end-grain cutting method.
