Great video. I still remember the days when people would pay $$$$$$ for programs like Any Disk or DVDFab to rip DVDs! It's getting to where some stuff isn't even ever placed on hard copies. I still like physical media best. Guess I'm kind of a hipster in that respect, only I'm not just discovering the joys of vinyl, I've always known it. Even VHS has a charm to it. Anyway, like I said, Great Video!

@ArguingMeadows
@ArguingMeadows 2 года назад
@@arbbo1675 No, not really. I prefer to save ISO files (that's how I rip DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-rays) to preserve menus and all the extras, but my HD DVD rips are MKV only. I think because it died relatively quickly there just wasn't enough of an incentive to develop drives and ripping software anywhere near to how robust it is for Blu-ray today. I'm mostly focusing on the HD DVD's that have better transfers than their Blu-ray counterparts (District B-13 and Aeon Flux have better encodes on HD DVD) and movies that never came out on Blu-ray (The Dukes Of Hazzard 2005 remake)

*pats his XBox 360 HD-DVD drive he's owned for 10+ years* I bought Serenity on HD-DVD years before I owned that! God I'm such a nerd. The XBox HD-DVD drive is pretty decent as an external drive if you have a modern machine without an optical drive. Obviously not a burner, but not an issue for most.

I have owned the LG H20L since 2007, believe it or not, and it still works perfectly. My current desktop, however, has no 5.25' bays, so I picked up a cheap USB 3.0 to SATA adapter and have it sitting on my desk. I use AnyDVD rips EVERY 4k blu ray UHD I have with ease too! Rips most of my HD DVDs - XBOX 360 add on bought it new at £25 many moons ago. Some just will not rip - the format itself was better in one way to Blu Ray - no draconian DRM. However, AnyDVD rips out any DRM - I like MakeMKV too - best to have both in my eyes!!!

@@welshtechie6832 HD DVD used DRM similar to Blu-Ray . The difference was that HD DVD was region free and Blu-ray wasn't/isn't . I imported lots of cool Japanese HD DVDs back in the day . The early HD DVD playing software like PowerDVD had to update disc keys all the time and when companies delayed updating those programs and keys they simply wouldn't work with the newer discs . I use AnyDVD HD and KODI media player to play HD DVD discs because KODI won't play copy protected discs just like VCL won't . I've been using AnyDVD HD to rip all of my HD DVDs to HDD to play from a media box , it's much easier than crossing my fingers and hoping the physical disc will still work .

It's typically Warner Bros HD-DVD's that die, they Rot. Most of mine are dead, the Universal and paramount ones are ok. Back in the Day Most blu-rays where using Mostly Mpeg-2 sometimes VC-1 and only a single layer 25GB disks vs the HD-DVD using a more advanced codec and typically VC-1, AVC was tough to decode for CPU's back then. HD-DVD typically looked better or identical than the Blu-ray counterparts at the time. HD-DVD mandated DD+ where as blu-ray mandates Dolby Digital and Dolby digital + can only be used to add extra channels to the core Dolby Digital or DTS as the core audio. so on the whole HD-DVD may sound better on basic disks released on both formats with base audio.

Another caveat when ripping HD-DVD's is that the video stream on the disc contains soft 3:2 pulldown flags. MakeMKV doesn't remove those and Plex sees those as 1080i 60Hz instead of 1080p 24Hz. You need to run the MKV files through a command line utility called eac3to extract the video stream while removing the 3:2 pulldown flags. You can then reinsert the video stream into the MKV with MKVtoolnixGUI. I've also found that MakeMKV 1.17.5 has trouble with HD-DVD's with AACS versions greater than v1. The utility 'DumpHD' can backup those discs to a folder which you can open up in makemkv as you would a BD folder backup.

I had a collection of around 400 HD DVD’s and about half of them failed due to disc rot, including my blade runner box set. I had zero issues with make mkv, I have a LG combo drive that does BD & HD DVD. I even had a full on setup with a Toshiba E10 standalone player but nothing would read half of my discs that failed. I noticed make mkv is able to rip more deteriorated disks than handbrake. I have one disk that plays but does not want to rip due to deterioration. I tried waxing the disc. Nogo. Im going to put the disk in the fridge for a bit then try it. Main reason for me to backup dvds is because of rot. If stored properly even dvds will almost last forever. Some storage rules: keep in original case, Do not stack, keep room temp 78 or lower, keep away from light, keep away from heat source, keep humidity low, no water exposure, remove oils from disc, handle with gloves, rip backups to blu-ray or mdisc.

15 Mbit/s at the worst on HD DVDs? Damn', that's almost as low as Netflix. Tho I guess it makes sense. Especially in the early days of the HD formats, dual layers discs were both less reliable in manufacturing and more expensive to make, so movie studios ofc tried to avoid them as much as they could. Given that HD DVD only had 15GB per layer, compared to Blu-Rays 25GB and you already got an answer for the lower quality. I haven't really gotten into collecting physical media until rather recently, so I mostly just own modern releases and re-releases of older titles, and they all come on two-layer discs (with the odd 3-layer UHD Blu-Ray in between), but there's one movie that I bought used, which was released during the format war and on both formats, and that is my only single-layer Blu-Ray. Really weird to see it included a DVD for the bonsu content, but ig back then that was still considered good enough. Kinda like how some UHD releases include the bonus content on an extra (regular) Blu-Ray...

You can buy a slim drive and put it in a USB enclosure (LG BU40N in a Vantec enclosure, for instance). All drives these days will have restrictions built into the firmware, though, so you want to get a drive that can be flashed to original firmware that has fewer restrictions. More details (and people who sell pre-flashed drives in a usb enclosure) on the MakeMKV forum.

I recently revisited my old HDDVDs and was very sad to find a couple of them have disc rot. Also, it seems HDDVDs are extremely sensitive to any debris or smudges. One of my discs had some old smudges on it, and even after cleaning it, the movie skipped frames and froze. Could just be my player, but any disc that isn’t completely spotless will skip in some areas. Hopefully someone has researched whether or not there are any HDDVDs with exclusive content so that data can be saved before the discs rot.

Have just loaded MakeMKV to give it a whirl but I'm still hooked on Handbrake to rip to MKV. Good point about external and internal disc drives as on one computer I used an LG external DVD and on another the internal drive and as the video noted the program didn't really want to know what was going on while on the internal DVD (same movie) no issues at all. MKV will play on the latest TV sets (I'm from New Zealand and might be slightly behind the latest gadgets) but often the soundtrack is missing. Use the freeware Avidemux to re-stripe the MKV audio to AC3(lav) which takes a couple of minutes rather than having to change everything to Mp4/3.

afik those xbox drives are just external housings around internal drives, every one i took apart was anyway, and you can stick them inside a system they are just a sata drive inside a housing with a usb adapter. as to rip speed some software will limit rip speeds to a set speed, one trick to speed up ripping and conversion is actually to rip using blindwrite or another software, to an image file, then mount the image file in a virtual drive. dvdfab at least in my testing showed a pretty sizeable dif in speed, as it ripped the files from the disk a best speed, then converted them to whatever format/settings you choose to use, for best size to quality ratio, vp9 is a beast, for faster, gpu accelerated options hevc and avc are supported on nvidia hardware going quite a few gens back now...

With my Toshiba SD-H802A I could only rip discs with AACS v1, but not those with AACS v3 or v4. Is this due to the drive? Would it work better with e.g. the XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive? Then I have a second problem. It shows me that the HD-DVD films are in 29.97 fps. The ripped mkv is also in 29.97 fps. But this is wrong, because the video is jerky. If I force the media player or HD-DVD player to 23.976 fps, the jerking stops. How can I change the metadata so that the video is automatically played at the correct 23.976 fps? If you or anyone else has a tip, I would be very grateful.

That disc has multiple video streams with picture in picture and all kinds of features that would likely make making a usable movie out of it nearly impossible . Altering the movie files like this introduces a lot of chance for unforeseen compatibility issues . Trying to do this for any number of discs would be time consuming and frustrating . If you're still interested , you might try KODI . It's a free media player and it has some HD DVD support . As long as you removed the copy protection when you ripped them it just might play them . KODI will even play your HD DVD discs if you run AnyDVD HD in the background . In my opinion it's the best HD DVD compatible player out there .

Somehow you're going to have to convert the Blu-Ray (M2TS) or other movie files to HD DVD (EVO) files . As far as I know the only software that could do this was old versions of Sony Vegas Pro . You could burn it to either HD DVD-Rs or even regular DVD-Rs if the file size was compatible . A friend of mine used this method back in the day to make HD DVDs of the original Star Wars trilogy before they were even released on Blu-Ray . He captured the movies from a 720p HD Cable channel . When you inserted the discs the player's display would say "HD DVD" , even the ones on DVD-Rs . We all thought that was the coolest thing in the world at the time . Don't know if old versions of Sony Vegas still work .

Right off the bat you're giving inaccurate information @0:45. HD-DVD did NOT used a different laser then Bluray. They both used a blue laser of similar frequency and amplitude. The main differences was file format and data density on the media.
@EposVox
@EposVox 3 года назад
Using the same frequency of light doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable. My point was that it’s a different process (density matters) and they’re formatted different and cannot be used interchangeably. For “right off the bat” that’s probably the only really “inaccurate” information which was more meant to be a dumbed down explanation and really doesn’t negatively affect anyone’s understanding here.

Hey... I think YOU made a HUGE mistake when you bought that drive... YOU - bought the LG GGW-H20L. DO YOU SEE WHERE YOU GOOFED??? I have no idea where on the net you went for information to get an internal PC drive from but right on the WIKI page concerning HD-DVD things near the bottom of that page I'll place here ALL the text on Multi-Format Drives: "Dual-compatibility drives Internal optical disc drive from LG playing both, HD DVD and Blu-ray disks In 2007, LG and Samsung released standalone consumer players that could read both HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs.[a] The machines were sold at premium prices, but failed to sell in large quantities. In May 2008, both companies announced they would stop manufacturing dual-compatibility drives.[64] A few computer manufacturers (such as HP and Acer) sold computers with combination HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc drives. LG marketed a Blu-ray writer that also read HD DVD discs (but could not write to them).[65][66]" (look at the number "65" right at the end of that paragraph, it STATES that the LESSER MODEL WAS NAMED LG GGW-H20L - the NO SO WELL MADE model) Do you see where you went wrong here? OK, I'll CLUE YOU IN THEN - The CORRECT LG Blu-Ray/HD-DVD + LightScibe READER/WRITER you NEED if you wish to PLAY (and write to) BOTH HD-DVD AND BLU-RAY DISCS PROPERLY is the MODEL: LG GGC-H20L!!! NOT THE MODEL LG GG"W"-H20L!!! While it is "TRUE" that the GGW-H20 "COULD" "READ" HD-DVD films there was a HUGE PROBLEM that the public was NOT made aware of: Namely the fact that red diode they used on the LESS expensive to make AND LESS POWERFUL OVERALL! In fact, the Model GGW in MANY OTHER WAYS was really made like some BARGAIN BASEMENT pile of JUNK! THIS - is why you had SO MANY ISSUES when trying to rip the disc DATA onto your PC! - AND - the LG-GGW-H20L CAN NOT "BURN" HD-DVD DISCS... EVER!!! The GGW-H20L was in my opinion "PAWNED OFF" onto the UNSUSPECTING public AT THE SAME DAMN PRICE AS WHAT THE UNIT BEFORE (the GGC-H20L) WAS SOLD AT - WHICH IN MY BOOK WAS A REALLY CRAPPY THING TO DO TO PEOPLE who had in their possession HUNDREDS of HD-DVD's!!! Anyway, today after watching your video here I found on Ebay the Model LG GGC-H20L for a KILLER price (under $40) from a seller who kept this drive in EXCELLENT condition - that will make 3 EXACT drives now that I now own. You never know when one of them will finally give up the ghost ya know! In any case, seeing as I have over 300 HD-DVD's (all in PERFECT working condition btw) I am NOT about to just go out and buy all new Blu-Ray discs for the exact same movies!!! Besides, in my opinion - HD-DVD films LOOK BETTER AND SOUND BETTER than their BLU-RAY brothers. I know, I have had friends come over in the past with their copies of the same movie (I'll use Blade Runner for an example) and WITHOUT telling my friend which version he was about to see I fire off the film and let them DECIDE which version he liked better - time after time (well over 50 films now I've done this with him on the SAME EXACT TV WITH NONE OF THE TV SETTINGS CHANGED IN ANY WAY!) the number of times he liked the HD-DVD version not only "better" but many times he would say "WAY BETTER". In fact in this "BLIND" comparison it now stands at OVER 80%+ the HD-DVD version was PREFERRED!!! I think the ONLY reason Blu-Ray won out was that SONY had GREASED THE PALMS of those who could make or break one over the other! While I CAN'T PROVE THIS it seems to me that Microsoft and Intel were handed a RAW DEAL!!! The COLORS ARE WAY BETTER BALANCED & RICHER, THE AUDIO IS WAY, WAY BETTER and in many cases there are more "extra features" put onto the discs. I would NOT trade my 5-Disc Blade Runner Set for ANYTHING - and - I was given the Blu-Ray 5-disc set version for my B-Day one year and after watching all 5 versions ONCE on Blu-Ray that was enough for me to put away the Blu-Ray set onto the shelf where it STILL SITS COLLECTING DUST until I fall off this spinning rock once and for all! Anyway, this was WAY long winded but I thought you'd like to hear an opinion from one who still thinks MS got the wrong end of the stick thrown at them! OH, and BTW, if you have the NERO v. 8 w/HD-DVD support AND you DON'T let NERO try and FORCE you into UP-GRADE (or UP-DATE) your version of NERO 8 YOU STILL CAN WATCH ON YOUR PC ALL THE HD-DVD MOVIES YOU LIKE!!! Just don't let NERO BULLY you into falling for their MARKETING DEPT. SCAM to TRY and make you "think" you'll STILL be able to watch your HD-DVD's after you upgrade onto whatever version they are peddling these days - JUST DON'T DO IT as they are LYING TO YOU (also, don't let WINDOWS try and "up-date" you either, if you do you will NEVER be able to later go back to the EARLIER version - IT WILL PERMANENTLY RE-WRITE your internal REGISTRY settings to NEVER AGAIN use that older WORKING version of NERO 8 w/HD-DVD support!!! To watch CURRENT Blu-Rays USE ANOTHER SOFTWARE PROGRAM (NOT NERO) for all your Blu-Ray Films!!! THAT IS THE SECRET TO WATCHING HD-DVD's IN 2023 - USE NERO 8 w/HD-DVD support (you'll NEED the original copy of the program that CAME with the LG GGC-H20L when it was SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY INSIDE THE BOX - NO OTHER VERSION WILL WORK!!!
