As fast food restaurants are now required to pay employees at least $20 an hour, some owners are turning to AI while others predict minimum wages for other industries will likely go up. NBC Los Angeles' Conan Nolan reports.
I actually work at mcds, and um even before we got this $20 I and everyone else wasn’t getting hours to begin with. But now we going to get less. But also I found out that my manager are getting 80gbs per week. The thing is idk if it’s my mcds only or all mcds, but I find it kinda messed up that mcds gives them all these extra hours and I’m barely getting 12hrs a week.
@@andyd3447 But don't his employees deserve the same? Newsome is not in charge, he is led by his staffers who give him his talking points and direct him what the agenda is. They are the go between of TPTB and puppets like him.
We are not supposed to be paying taxes to subsidize McDonald's Workers. McDonald's made $14.5 Billion in Profit last year, the Jobs are not going anywhere.
@@bargdaffy1535 I agree. The welfare and other social services agencies should deny working people benefits. Fast food joints were never intended to be careers but beginning jobs.
In the 90's as a broke college i went to a job interview and when i said 'no 'as the manager asked me if i can communicate in English i knew by then that i won't get hired.
@@GreggWalken-xd3qv Keep in mind the people that write these articles are NOT real journalists but in the make-believe world of liberals they pretend they are.
But the local spots are going to also have to raise wages in order to compete for a workforce. The only options in 10 years are going to be chains that have hiked prices, or the local spot that cost millions to open and operate. You can already feel that throughout every town in the US. This is a small piece of the puzzle - but owning and operating a small restaurant for a middle class living is becoming obsolete. I think this benefits the fast food places substantially in the long run.
i havent for YEARS since taco bell was sued for using SAND as filler and these corrupt chains have bought out the politicians allowing them to serve FILLER as meat
The only person who got an exemption was a man who owned eight Panera restaurants, just so happens he is a friend of Newsome's and donated 220,000.00 to him. He was granted an exemption as a bakery. Did Subway or any other restaurants that make their own bread products get it, I doubt it.
YOU NEED TO WAKE UP you cant " get rid" of politicians or presidents they aren't elected in modern times its a selection NOT an election if your votes mattered they wouldn't even have elections.
@pkodani72 You're missing the point: businesses will be forced to close down, because they will raise food/ menu prices, to which customers will prefer to eat at home. The Newsomes (demolitioncrats) of this country just don't understand economics 101.
Getting paid 30-40 bucks an hour requires skills many people do not have. That’s the problem, people have no skills to throw on the table. It takes more than just breathing. Lol.
I love it! Make products and services so unaffordable that they shut down businesses and leave the workers getting 0 hours per week. You can't fix stupid.
Managers need to be at $38 an hour. Who cares about college
Месяц назад
That is like that in all states. Minimum wage is like 10 and managers get 15. Then the democrats want to raise min wage to 15. Messes up the entire economy and everyone's worth
I went to a Taco Bell / Long John's drive through. Rather than hot sauce for my burrito I got tartar sauce in the bag. They are 'unskilled' because they can't or won't think.
@@jessicah3782yes it was. It was meant for teenagers McDonald’s was never a career. These Hispanic people are uneducated and don’t know how to do anything else so they try to make fast food a career. To say it never was is uneducated asf. McDonald’s specifically had ads that specifically stated it was for teens trying to make some money to buy their highschool prom photos and yearbook. Now the uneducated poor want a career out of basic fast food labor. Ridiculous.
Yep it comes down to no more lazy employees they're going to have to work their butts off like people did in the old days know being on the cell phone.
@@DanielbboylightCalifornia state income tax is like 6% on incomes between $38k-54k. I think the insane cost of living is much more of a concern than taxes.
@@Danielbboylightit’s not just taxation but stupid policies that act as red tape that prevent affordable housing, businesses, and anything that would make life easier
It's not just the 4.00 per hour more, Employees will pay a bit more into social security, they will also pay more towards state and federal tax as their filing amount changes, that is of course unless they are illegal. This also cost employers more than 4.00 more, they have to pay a higher percentage into social security, unemployment, and employment taxes.
If you dyed your hair pink, took a couple college classes on gender politics and social justice, you'd change your mind. Everything should be free and could be, all we have to do is tax those evil trillionaires, except of course the ones that sponsor peaceful protests, community organizers, and state attorney generals.
You're supposed to work a minimum wage job to gain skills, then move on to a higher paying career. She's been working at McDonald's 17 years, has no interest in moving on, and clearly has no interest in learning English
Yeah I remember the folks who used to say that. They punched a clock and pulled a lever in a factory 1000 times a day back in the 70s and got to pay off a home, two cars, put all their kids through college, and retire with a pension. For pulling a lever in a factory 1000 times a day.
They never even invited the franchise owners to this "negotiation" and had everyone at this "negotiation" sign a Non Disclosure Agreement. Sounds corrupt to me.
Actually no, we should be angry that in 1975, the majority of the income in the US was paid wages, but in 2024 a supermajority of the income is sent to shareholders. The people making $50 an hour should be just as mad about the $50. If wages had held as a percentage of national income, we'd all be making 25% more across the board. But we decided we didn't need unions or labor rights anymore.
Raising salaries to offset inflation and rising taxes has never been the answer. Reduce gov't spending/waste, reduce taxes, reduce inflation! This is a tax windfall for the corrupt Liberal politicians. Everyone will pay with higher prices which will negate any "increase" these employees think they are going to get.
Back in the days when "America Was Still Great" wage earners took the majority of the national income, and unskilled factory laborers made enough to pay off a house, two cars, and their kids' college, while earning multiple pensions, just for pulling a lever 1000 times a day and loading a pallet. No one was complaining about labor costs except corporate hacks and their lickspittles.
The mom and pop diner are going to have to hike wages in order to compete for a workforce. The only local spots that can compete cost millions to open and operate. I think this will directly impact the small mom and pop shops in the long run.
she really made poor life choices, worked 17 years at a fast food place while not learning english or any other skills. She doomed herself, its too late for her now. She will not struggle forever
These fast food workers are so excited to receive higher pay , need to wake up when they have less customers , then pay more taxes higher rate. Ultimately shut down their store due to low profit. Then no more jobs . So exciting !
And they created a quasi-legislative body called the Fast Food Council that passes laws without the state legislature or the governor's signature and are not being regulated by the courts. I'm skeptical that it's legal for the state legislature to create a second state legislature full of unelected beaurocrats.
@@MIkeKDBA This is the way CA is going, because there's no countervailing party to anything they do. It's scary. The federal govt is also trying to use 'rulemaking' to get things done that they can't get passed in Congress. See the new EV mandate, for example.
Right ! It’s a early first job thing while in school not a career - but democrats want to keep you low and tied to them , this will be the migrants destination for jobs
This so called expert is wrong. The companies will shut down locations that are not profitable anymore creating unemployment or accelerate their efforts to automate their processes with kiosks and automated food preparation.
It sound like the legislature didn't work on this at all. They allowed the SEIU to write the law and are allowing a Fast Food Council to create laws outside of the legal process that are not signed by the Governor or regulated by the courts.
You should not feel bad for anyone with a job and a clean record . Try being educated but you have an uncleared record and prevented to get a job . That’s worse.
Governor, let's talk turkey. I've been crunching numbers at my restaurant while you've been playing "Dignity: The Comedy Show." But guess what? The joke's on us. Your policies are costing me an arm, a leg, and every last penny in my piggy bank. With a 15% price hike for big franchises, my $9.99 burrito is now a wallet-wrenching $11.49, and customers are feeling the pinch. So, Governor, it's time to put your money where your mouth is and stop treating our livelihoods like Monopoly money. We need real solutions, not funny business.
So you're upset that you can take paying more and refuse to but you want full time employees to make less instead and suffer to scrape by? Such a selfish mindset.
@@cassady7169 Well the real horror is this: it will accelerate the adoption of automation by large corporations like McDonalds. That will reduce employment in the industry. People who would have otherwise been employed at $16 an hour will end up getting $0 an hour.
I don't have to pay anything. I can boycott. I'm a low income senior adult living on social security only and struggling to put food on the table paying outrageous prices for food at WALMART. The stupid little increase I got for social security went right to my rent increase. Greed, greed, greed!
Learn how the marketplace works. Were you one of those goody goody Democrats who elects people who refuse to enforce our immigration laws, flooding the country with illegal aliens who compete with our own low-income folks for jobs and housing?
THINK OF HOW MUCH WASTE AND LAW SUITS HAPPEN DUE TO THESE LOW SKILLED LABORERS. PLUS YOU ARE FORCED TO PAY THEM $20 HOURLY AND HEALTH CARE. THIS WAS A TROJAN HORSE
These employees are not going take home more money after their hours are cut. Fast food restaurants that don't have the financial resources to automate are going to shut down.
I am no fan of greedy big corporations, believe me, but if the increased costs are being passed on to the consumer, somebody explain how hiking the minimum wage is actually helping. If the minimum wage went up 20%, and every store and restaurant hikes their prices 20%, sure the low wage earner is no better off.
Thank you for forcing me to eat healthier, waste less money, and perfect a skill, and when all the business close down or fire half their crews, people will start to re-think coming here for work, there won't be any work because everything will be too expensive.
That one girl is dumb… No, you’re not actually getting 20/hr. After applicable taxes it’s more like 15-16$ an hour. I made 20$ an hour a 5 or 6 years ago, and it got me absolutely nowhere. Enjoy paying extra taxes, having your hours cut, and possibly or more than likely losing your job.
A labor union required government officials and other people to signa non-disclosure agreement to discuss a law??!! How is that democracy? Who is running that state?
The Wienerschnitzel near my retail store, said that they will not be hiring people who have no work experience. They will be looking for experienced workers only, Now that they are forced to pay $20 an hour.
Aren’t fast food just a pit stop job like a stepping stone while in school or something ? That lady has been there 17 years?? Wow sloppin fries isent just for teens anymore i guess.
0ne hundred thousand plus for a new pickup, two thousand a month for rent, day care for one child, three hundred plus a week. Even at the new min. wage a person would have to work three weeks just to pay for rent. I just got back from Wallmart with my Ruffles Party bag (Smaller size) that is now a few cent under SIX DOLLARS.
California's minimum wage remains $16 per hour...except for fast food workers. I'm wondering what makes them so special, other than their demographics.
@@Tcyc-le3pi But what you're failing to realize is, there will be workers that will quit the mom and pop stores if they are getting paid $4 or $5 less for doing the same kind of work. So it will make it harder for these mom and pop stores to find workers if they are offering $5 less than other fast food restaurants.
Because of this, most other workers would be paid much more than $20. Strictly speaking, 16 is the minimum wage, but word of mouth suggests that it is over 20.
It’s not the wage hike, restaurants are also paying 50% more for their food & supplies. My son owns a small restaurant, thank God not in California, but his supplies & food costs are outrageous BUT you can still get a good burger, fries & a drink for less than a fast food restaurant.
@@sherryfarkas-gz1bi I understand what you are saying, friends own businesses too, California has paid high taxes and low wages for 40 years, but yet in the 80s they raised the wages by about a dollar all companies were crying jobs would lose Business all lies, all 50 states a least 15 bucks an hour, we all benefit people would spend more money, look at Europeans good wages, young people doing good there, we need to wake up, greed will destroy this country, 70 years old seen it all to much greed in the corporate 🌍 world. God bless
The large chains aren’t crying because they can afford to invest in automation and innovation it’s the smaller chains that are suffering. The ones that do not get $25m in bonuses but instead barely survived the closures during the pandemic and their margins are much smaller now because of inflation. You know, the small family owned chains.
@@flickeringflame6161 It's just reality - no one's fault. Jobs often require specific clothing/ outfit that the employees have to buy, gas and vehicle access, etc. Deducted from your paycheck are a variety of taxes, insurance, etc. The average person has no say in government spending on wars or subsidizing foreign countries so I don't think it matters in this discussion. The bottom line is that the typical employee at these jobs is probably living very cheaply with their parents to make ends meet. If they don't work at all they still get fed but have no additional expenses related to working. If they go to work, it has to be enough to be positive cash flow.
Ironically the big winner is AI and those expecting bigger paychecks will in many cases be shown the door. AI will never ask for a vacation, raise, insurance, benefits and the list of things normally given to employees. They will have a single central server tied to multiple kiosks in multiple locations and all taking orders and processed from a single computer chip.
Or the fast food companies could create a call center to take orders. Employees would work for the call centers instead of the fast food restaurants. Everything that can be outsourced will be including delivery and cleaning the restaurants.
This is how a non-business owner thinks. If you raise minimum wage to $20 a hour the cost will be passed own. My burger, fri & drink $18 + my $0.40 ketchup per package where will this end besides Unemployment.
I live in wonderful suburban Virginia. Please keep your conservative poverty wages out in rural America and in neighboring states like West Virginia and Kentucky.
This is a great bill, we should all show support as successful people encouraging younger or less fortunate workers to partake in the economy with dignity, not subsistence!
I worked at a McDonald's for two years. Later on I got a job where I met my first wealthy person, a co-worker. One day she said that "Fast food work was demeaning". I'd never heard anyone say that labor was demeaning and neither myself nor my former McDonald's coworkers felt demeaned. We did our jobs the best as we could and were proud of it. Only "privileged people" look down on work that they know that they WILL NEVER do themselves. This law will end up being an economic disaster for many.
The $20/ hour law artificially inflates, so the board members raise prices instead of bearing the burden. The law should have made corporations pay a percentage of the profits for each tear of worker
What is it to you how much a CEO is paid....Why dont you open your own company, invest your own money, you can be CEO and you can pay all your employees 100 per hour and take nothing for yourself....
All these fast food restaurants should really just Sue California and sciu for the violation of discriminatory Acts remember the minimum wage only affects them and if the real smart they'll ask a judge to put a suspension on the minimum wage law until after proceedings
Just wait and see, soon they’ll start complaining that they need $50/hr to flip burgers. AI and Automation can’t get here fast enough. Automate everything! …the $30 Big Mac soon coming to a McDonald’s near you 😎🍔💰
Let's be clear. If Healthcare was covered, then we wouldn't need workers comp for health related issues in the workplace. Lower costs for employers. Saying that an employee doesn't deserve a living wage is all I hear.
I gave up on McDonalds last year, dont really eat much fast food so no big deal to me. I will still go to restaurants and see how that goes however I like my cooking so will do that. This California goverment is so out of touch, cannot stand our governor. Yuck
