I will never forget that substitution.Riquelme out cambiasso in. Argentina were 1-0 up.And into the semi-final . Jose Pekerman got afraid, and took out his playmaker. Started to play defensive. Truly one of the worse subs of all time. He didnt even let messi play in this match. Argentina had a great team in 2006. and they played the best football of the tournament. They deserved better.
2006 was the best world cup I ever watched... France, Italy, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, England, all great teams who could have won the trophy
@@cmmiguelx12 Me too. Definetly the best World Cup I´ve ever watched as well. I was 10 an will never forget it. Sadly, football has changed so much ever since that we´ll hardly experience a world cup of that level. South Africa 2010 sucked, and Russia 2018 was bland as hell. Magic died.
@@mateoairaudo5535 yea remember that final? Last match of Zizou, a red a card and a panenka penalty goal against Buffon lol most football games look boring nowadays, too predictable and robotic, no one likes to take the risk anymore and that took some of the magic from the game
@@cmmiguelx12 Of course. We were celebrating my grandpa's birthday that day and watched the whole match. Man, I was almost in tears when Zidane got sent out and Italy won. Zidane had done so great at his last tournament that he did not deserve that bitter farewell. He's still my greatest football idol alongside Riquelme. Besides, France has always been my favourite national team after my country Uruguay.
And yes. Somehow, the magic of football has vanished over the years. Today it's more about speed and physicality and few players actually give you joy.
I'm still getting angry every time seeing Riquelme substitute to Cambiasso... But, anyway, after Bilardo, Pekerman and Sabella are only decent Argentina's coaches
Riquelme may not have been playing in this World Cup, but this win, this one was for him too, congratulations Argentina! thank you for bring it back to this side of the world 🙏🙏
+Erfuc Music So True.. I love the class and Elegance he displays while on the Ball, I can Think of a few others who are Similar, Ozil, Bergkamp, Zidane, maybe even Pirlo
Jay Jay Puskas Quaresma ozil is good but bpl usually turns people into the machines you see working everyday... Scholes is by far the only one who never became one ... He should move to la Liga or serie a to play his natural game
Bharat Raghavan well there definitely is more Freedom in offensive play in those leagues in comparison to the BPL but if you watch Ozil u'll see that Arsenal actually allow him to Free Roam to certain extent... I feel the only Problem Ozil has is since leaving Madrid he doesn't have that self Belief that Players like Riquelme are full of!
Jay Jay Puskas Quaresma see good you raised this point ...Wenger in my opinion is a very good manager ... Empowers his players no doubt... But the problem is like you told with bpl... It's just too fast and physical... And when you are caught up with the desire to avoid losses you become a face in the crowd .... Same happened to another elegant striker ..berbatov... Not in the same league but the guy was a class act
Bharat Raghavan I agree completely! However I have to say that at Real Madrid Ozil was the talisman, who created for Superstars like Ronaldo, Higuain, Benz..and so on! But at Arsenal both him and Sanchez are the only real outfield players who are Stars, If the team had more Stars than it would suit his game a lot more since lets face it he might create as much as possible but when they don't have that quality upfront it's to no avail! That being Said the tempo and Physicality of the BPL is next level I agree... And Berba spent too much of his Career at Bayer and Spurs, he should have joined bigger club sooner than he did! But there were question marks placed on his Attitude and Work Rate, Never on his Ability! He had a silky slick touch probably the silkiest at times :p and he was a class act!
Argentina would never lose to Germany if Riquelme was on. It was the worst substitution I have ever seen. As an Argentina fun, it was really heart breaking.
Baffling. A player like Riquelme can control and switch the tempo of the game whenever he wants. Coaches sometimes are too scared and the substitutions reflect on the team mentality. Everyone slowly begins to drop deeper and deeper and more scared to receive the ball in pressure situations. I'm sure if Riquelme was kept on, he'd have seen the game out with his magic.
As foolish a blunder as that of Astles for Charlton, when England played West Germany in the 1970 tournament. Poor Cambiasso - also a very good player, but not quite in the same class (so few in complete football history are.....) and must always suffer, now, from the memory. Apart from probably preventing the equaliser by continuing to take the game to the opposition, Riquelme would have buried the penalty. It comes from egocentricity. Some managers like to leave their stamp on the match.and end up by sh***ing on it. Never underestimate the Germans. They never give up.
leoS179 Everyone knows you guys have great players, too, Leo. Who'd be brave enough to leave Kaiser Franz out of an all-time-greats world 11? But he'd be playing alongside (or rather, behind!) Roman, if it were my list we were working from.
Fun facts: Argentina coach had subbed Riquelme 2 times in 2 matches within year 2005 - 2006. 1. vs England in 2005 friendly, when argentina led by 2-1, end up lose 2-3. 2. vs Germany in 2006 WC quarterfinal, when argentina led by 1-0, end up draw 1-1, then lose in penalty kick.
2006 argentina played beautiful football even without zanetti, veron, samuel. This team deserved at least one international trophy. The last argentinian team so strong with depth in every position in the 21 st century.
Incredible video. The guy has the look and aura of Don Corleone lol. He is a flawed genius. Apparently didn't get on well with people so he didn't really have an illustrious career at the top level but he was acknowledged as one of the very best.
I think Riquelme liked play as a whole team ... and for some players and coaches who doesnt understand football ... sometimes it generates controversy. Thats the problem with our national team ... we have great players, but we dont play as a team.
@@bbguy17 no way dude. Ozil and Iniesta are amazing, but this guys controlled the timing of every game he played. The control of the game he had, to me is only comparable to Zidane.
@@RomanetlokoI agree for the most part now. Ozil can't control the game like Riquelme but Iniesta could and so could Scholes, Pirlo, and Xavi even though they played deeper
Incredible Riquelme with 28 years. I wonder what would happen if he was called for the 2002 World Cup... Argentina could pass the first round against Sweden and England?
If I recall correctly: Klose should have been sent off for a foul on Abbondanzieri who had to be replaced and was brought off the pitch on a stretcher; Argentina had one goal against Germany disallowed for an alleged offside which proved to be not true. I know that it was over 8 years ago, but I still remember that were my two conclusions fresh after that quarter-final. Coming to Riquelme's (or rather Argentina's) performance: I think Pekerman had created a great team that was capable of winning the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The Saviola's goal against Ivory Coast (or Cote d'Ivoire) was a masterclass [not to mention Maxi Rodriguez' strike against Mexico]. The way they demolished Serbia & Montenegro after the Plavi condeded the least number of goals in the UEFA Qualifications showed they had big firepower. TBH, prior to the HOL-ARG game I believed the Dutch might win because of the tournament being in Europe (still, both teams were sure to progress before MW3). Seeing how Holland performed against Portugal in that last 16 thriller I guess Argentina would get a better result in Oranje's place, but they got Mexico and Germany in the knockout ladder instead. Once again, I'm not 100% sure if Klose should have been sent off and if Argentina was deprived of a legal goal but that were my impressions back then
Love to see how non argentinians appreciate Roman's world class talent while here he's still hated (by Boca Jrs haters obviously).. He should have played in 2010 AND THIS YEAR TOO
Maximiliano Alignani well ,if somebody dont appreciate player like Riquelme ,that mean that person dont appreciate football ,becouse Riguelme was a pure natural play maker , with magic , so all I can say is , gracias Roman Riquelme ,el grande jugador
Way better than overrated and master of doping Zidane (and I'm French)... As a 10 on the field, only 2 players can match him: Platini and Maradona. Pure genius. Thanks
+carttom2 zidane doping? where is this coming from? riquelme himself thinks zidane was the best player in the world. but riquelme was fantastic and close to zidanes quality
Riquelme OUT. Cambiasso IN. And Messi in the BENCH. Someone should write a sad tango song about that. I still wonder WTF was Pekerman (Argentine coach) thinking that day??
AHORA ES EXCELENTE COMO DIRIGENTE DEL CLUB BOCA JUNIORS, EL MEJOR CLUB DE ARGENTINA. NOW HE IS EXCELLENT AS A MANAGER OF THE BOCA JUNIORS CLUB, THE BEST CLUB IN ARGENTINA.
Jose pekerman and Sven Goran Erikson the two coaches who murdered the two really very good teams who could have lifted or even gone into the finals of 2006 world cup. Such a shame.
Because he lost a substitution after Abbondanzieri's injury. But Cambiasso's change was the mistake. Messi had to play that game and Riquelme had to never leave.
