I don't like the property damage and the conditions people are living in. But, to make the mistake of violating civil rights or not affording due process of the law, it sets a dangerous precedent. It says to people that they can skip the formality of law and justice can be perverted in an attempt at gaining control. Everyone supports that until it is their turn to be violated. I’ve never understood why “unemployed people” with no job prospects, bother to take “stimulants” like meth and crack to wake up in the morning? How alert to do you need to be to do “nothing all day.” In many cases, the stimulants that they’re hooked on, actually caused them to lose their jobs and homes. Many of the “skinny” homeless people you see, refuse to buy food with the money they receive in hand-outs. Anyone who receives taxpayer-funded “cash assistance”, and uses that money for drugs, tobacco, or alcohol should be shot in the face.

The 4 major metropolitan areas of the west coast are magnets for the homeless. A vast majority of homeless are that way because they choose to be. It is easier to beg than to work.

It would be more manageable and attract a little less resentment from the community if there weren't so much God darn garbage involved. What is the advantage of hauling broken lawn mowers, pallets, dirty matresses/box springs, bike frames, etc, etc? Shed the garbage and at least you can move more freely and it won't attract problems. The homeless are fixated on lugging tons of garbage everywhere...it's maddening to watch!!!

The officials don’t care about the dignity of the homeless. They just stop the police from enforcing vagrancy, loitering and graffiti laws and decriminalize drugs. If the Democrats in Oregon cared, they would have started by reopening the State Hospital and starting new meaningful treatment plans. People have been talking about the problems of putting mentally ill and/or drug addicted people in jail and then releasing them onto the streets without treatment, for YEARS.

Many of these people aren’t from Portland. They come from all over because of the city’s leniency and benefits. The issues are deep, but it has little to do with Covid, which is the standard excuse. The leadership have been fomenting this forever and I’ve been talking about the lack of concern for true help and dignity for the homeless who want and need it for over a decade. All the leadership does is order police to stop enforcing decency, vagrancy, loitering and graffiti laws and now they decriminalized drugs. State Mental Hospital should have been reopened years ago. Anyone who refuses drug treatment as a prerequisite to benefits should be moved on out of the city. People who are proven to be committed to treatment should have access to decent temporary housing while they get on their feet and rejoin society, or group living/halfway houses. The leadership love spreading misery, that’s the only explanation I see.
