It's kind of sad how American influence has led to the spread of Sinophobia within Western nations. China has never pursued a unilateral approach, America on the other hand, spends billions deposing democratically elected foreign leaders to install puppets in their pursuit of unilateralism. Perhaps people need to stop fearing the Chinese and learn a thing of two from them. The world should embrace globalism and cooperation; we need to stop fearing one another and actually start working together.

Sadly now in 2020 Australia has adapted the American aggression against China. I don't know if Malcolm Turnbull Is in politics but thinkers like him are really needed if Australia doesn't want to join America in its decline. Australia is in a great position to be a peace maker and peace maker rather than follow the American lead into aggression and isolation. Australia simply can't afford the American style of bellicose against China. America mainly because of its never ending wars and monstrous upswing of wealth to the richest people in the world while the middle class has been pushed down into poverty and isolationism has condemned itself to collapse. Australia could and should be the key to a peaceful world but instead is eating up American exceptionalism and propaganda. Australia by becoming the link to a peaceful negotiator to bring America and China together with mutually beneficial Trade policies while doing as China does and leave internal policies to the countries they deal with them. By seeking to force countries all over the world to adopt American style on them is making enemies all over the world. America is not and never has been a democracy; its an oligarchy with false elections that are only allowed to run candidates that the Oligarchy approves. They call their politics democracy but there is no resemblance to democracy in America.

I am extremely surprised by such a rational speech about China given by this Australian politician, even more surprised about the huge contrast of his hysteria anti China attitude when he was elected as prime minister. This video was recorded in 2012. Same person, only over three years, what caused the change? His political position changed. If this is how a Western political system (often being labelled equally as democratic system), is that really a good system as western politicians advocate. I have seen so many cases in western countries, in malcolm's case, it is particularly shocking

Sure, India is growing, but there are a lot of reforms we need to do if we were to reach their level of GDP. Also, his suggestion that the Chinese govt to increase transparency about their intentions is purely in China's best interest. I don't see any reason for the Chinese commenters here to take offense.

So for the Western way of life that has a value for the way of life England and the US would be wise to merge for a balance of power. The US and England have a tradition of Contract law that enables capitalism that Russia sadly never got around to.

+Zhen Liu But the problem is why under his government, Aussis is starting so-called Freedom of Navigation flights to South China Sea just exposed recently? Is he pragmatic? I think what he said in the speech does not match what he is doing right now. Aussis, be careful, do not eat more than you can chew!

He is the prime minister, not a president. The parliament is quite different here in Australia compare to the U.S. In Australia we have 'Washminster' system. Prime minister does not have order over everything, ministries have. Minister for Foreign Affairs, which in particular, Julie Bishop is the one entitled and should be blamed. Prime minister in Australia does lead the cabinet in deciding government policy. But does not have direct control over the(or her) cabinet and ministers, and their policy making.

So glad that Abbott got rid of this defeatist. While I see his points, he's presenting a myopic 'face value' view of global economic politics. The same variety that posed Japan as the overlord of all in the 80s. I find it very hard to accept him as a patriot of the anglo-sphere, let alone Australia.

Yeah, after they suppressed a guerrilla independence movement (which proved to be useful experience for Vietnam) due to the fact that the whole nation was the spoil of a war game between Spain and the US played in Manila Bay about 80 years before that. Imagine how'd that affect your nation's Nationalistic Ego (in the psychological sense).

Good talk but otherwise many of the statistics are outdated. China doesn’t have 420km of railway, it has increased 5 times from this talk to 146,000 km as of 2020…..38,000km of these tracks are bullet trains.

The chinese diaspora all over the world has shown the peaceful nature of the chinese ppl...and their hardwork and intelligent nature in general..their contribution in developing other nations economy is immense if u just see these in some asian nations...so china since its opening up from communistic practice will unleash these potential of the people n will contribute to the world peacefully too if they are not unfairly contained..peace to the world!

Ironic to watch this speech after nine years. So is today's Australia under the same liberal politicians trying to fight the natural order of things? Remember Lee Kuan Yew's famous prediction on Australia? Hope it would never happen...

did he say China will overtake US in 2016?wooh wooh wooh,im a Chinese Canadian myself and even I gotta admit that seems a bit too optimistic.China's economy is just over half of the American economy,to overtake US in just 4 years will require annual growth of 30% or something ridiculous like that,i think overtaking US by 2020 will be impressive enough, but 2016 is just stretching it,unless US fall apart like the Soviet Union did or something

If china can control corruption as much as possible and govern strongly like singapore for example so that freedom is given without disrupting daily life and evolve slowly but go ahead to develop economically..will be good for world...china is historically a peaceful country with thousand years recorded history..it sailed the seas hundred years ago but never waged wars or colonises or enslave ppl

It’s kind of ironic watching him address the young students and their parents 9 years ago. Since then he became the prime minister by taking down Tony Abbott, and followed by similar fashion, he was replaced by Scott Morrison. A person once in power, couldn’t push through his energy policy, which Australia is still lock of, for too long, because he had to give in to his own party’s right wing to stay in power. He seems to know China okay, only if he wrote his own speech, clearly what Mao said in 1949 burned in his mind, in 2017, he said “Aodaliya renmin zhanqilai - the Australian people stand up”. Let’s watch how Australia’s alliance policy play out in another 9 years. Don’t think a country without an independent foreign policy will do well in the long run. AUKUS, QUAD, nuclear subs, long range missiles, former prime minister visiting Taiwan, Australia has certainly been busy, busy with containing China, it’s largest trading partner. Australia-US alliance sounds more like neocolonialism than anything else. China is not going to disappear, so deal with it intelligently, think China is going to collapse any time soon? Think again. China has the longest continuous history of any country in the world-3,500 years of written history, and is still up in the high. The chance that America is going to have a civil war in coming decades is probably higher than China’s giving in to the alliance. Australian people please do stand up, don’t be someone’s puppy. We sure live in an exciting time.

“Why are we not as good as we should be.” That question has been answered by many a Chinese scholar. It lies in the nature of democracy, which breads terribly inefficient government. It gets worse when democracy is mixed in with a neoliberal capitalist system. Unfortunately, the west is so addicted to the illusion of “democracy as the best and only viable political system.” It behooves the west to shut up for a bit and fixes its own system, rather than incessantly trying to “liberal” other countries to democracy at gunpoint.
