I listened to this last night before going to sleep and just came back to comment and show it some love. That reveal was actually brilliant. I'm not going to spoil anything, but it has to do with the true identity of a certain character that most of our heroes did not recognize. I was as surprised as they were. The brilliance in it lies in when you think back to a conversation in a much earlier chapter involving a teacher and the students that seemed unimportant at the time. Little did we know, it was setting up for the reveal even back then.
I mean.. To be fair: I didnt expect what happened. But it's the old "gun on the wall" I thought they were going to fall in love, lucas and merrywhether. I did not expect this!
- Your "Story-Telling Skills" are top-notch. I purchased this book but have yet to crack it. I eagerly await each Friday edition of this series. The inflections you add make this better than I can experience on my own. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy this.

Everytime the video ends, I am just like, "ah dammit.." As a bookish sort, the book that you read doesn't disappear in your hands. 🤣🤣 I am loving this, and I actually make time to listen, so I've been going on walks when I do. Just to focus on the story. ❤
This book is so good, its become a part of my routine to watch this when hoovering on Saturdays. Im terrible at reading, so I hope the sequel's audiobook is out fairly soon after this one ends lmao
Yes! One of my favorite characters is back, I was literally complaining for weeks. My patience has been rewarded, and the gang arre training for a battle of hogwarts level seize so 10/10, I couldn't ask for anything more this week.
I find the technological mix unsettling but intriguing. The weaponry suggests that this is set in the late middle ages - perhaps - sort of, although where are the siege engines and the moats and palisades that are typically part of that style of fighting? The skyscrapers in Atrium City and the airships suggest late 19th/early 20th century technology, or at least aspects of it. And then there are wizards and a couple of alien races, at least one of which appears to have magical or nearly magical abilities - but can intermarry with humans. The airships would allow for aerial mapping but the area where Lucas and his foster parents hung out when they first fled Atrium City appears to be conspicuously and conveniently absent from any maps. If I'm going to be absolutely honest, I can see elements of the story that appear to be drawn from other fantasy fiction that was popular at the time this was being written although Mr DarkMatter has very much reworked them and made them his own. The first episode in particular struck me as being decidedly clunky in places but, as you can tell from the fact that I am here for part 8, the story definitely draws the listener in.

She was clearly a character who was going to play a major role later on in the story so I wondered why she was completely absent from the story for several weeks.

I'm enjoying the story alot so far, though I'm still not warming up to (SPOILERS) Merryweather/Vientte. Mostly because when she was pretending to be Merryweather the first thing she did to Lucas was throw rocks at him. And just in general she was cruel and spiteful...All to express affection? I know it's an old cliche *"Oh he's just being mean because he likes you."* - I've never liked it because it makes it seem hurting someone is a legitimate way to show affection. I know Merryweather/Vientte was still young then, but it seems alot of her post-Merryweather interactions with Lucas involve her abusing him to *(apparently)* show affection. It makes it very hard for me to like her when alot of the time her abuse is portrayed as her showing affection. I know alot of the story is from Lucas' perspective and he's not always the most reliable narrator, but in hindsight it makes Merryweather/Vientte look like a very nasty person. Especially since when Lucas mentions all the times she abused him, all she can say is *"point taken"* ...That's not an apology.

As someone who has had combat training, Garret is the worst instructor imaginable: Sadistic and narcissistic. My instructors actually taught us before sparring so as to understand the point of the exercises; Theory and practical application. Also, what's the point of beating your students so that they need days or more of recovery? I really hope Garrett befalls a just fate.
A plot twist is never late,mr frodo. Nor is it early. The reveal always arrives when the author means to. All lurd uv teh reingz aside, I think that... ATTENTION I WILL CENSOR THE SPOILERS WITH NONSENSE. ...the sentient sewing needle being actually the cursed potato from earlier was actually quite a good plot twist. I saw a person in the comments of the previous part say that this cursed potato was the sentient sewing needle that the autistic spider was looking for in order to sew the banana king back together. I did not believe them. Because,y'know,the cursed potato had too much fish on it's pet tree called david to be the sentient sewing needle. But then,looking back,the fact that the historian was talking a bit too woke when he was around the cursed potato when he is usually so radically conservative with the cursed potato's pet tree called david and the fact that nobody had fish on their tree besides the cursed potato.
