Total War: Shogun 2 - Rise of the Samurai Gameplay Information:
Rise of The Samurai is a brand new, independent campaign for Total War: SHOGUN 2.
Set 400 years before the dramatic civil war depicted in SHOGUN 2, the "Rise of The Samurai" campaign is based on the Gempei War, a conflict between six legendary clans of the Taira, Minamoto and Fujiwara families. It culminated in the first Shogunate, and the rise of the Samurai as the ruling class.

Play a brand new and independent campaign for SHOGUN 2 set in 12th century Japan.
The Rise of The Samurai campaign can be played in single-player mode as well as multiplayer versus or co-op modes.
3 new families divided into 6 playable clans
Each clan has its own unique set of traits, giving it a distinctive feel and play-style.
16 new land units spread across swordsmen, spearmen, archers, and cavalry. These include:
Foot Samurai - Masters of bow and sword, these Samurai are deadly at range or in melee. They may not be the most numerous units, but they are perhaps the most effective. Also protected by distinctive Gempei-period armour which gives excellent protection at range and in melee.
Sword Attendants - Armed with huge two-handed swords, these fearsome warriors can carve a bloody path in melee.
4 new Hero units - the Naginata Warrior Monk Hero, the Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero, the Mounted Samurai Hero and the Onna Bushi Heroine.
Onna Bushi Heroine - Armed with Naginata and bow, these female Samurai are versatile cavalry units who excel in melee. Do not doubt the courage of a woman…
Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero - armed with iron-studded clubs, these Monks are devastating in melee as they bash their way through their foes.

@@jxslayz6663 Japan's military was very poorly designed. There were attempts to rationalise it, beginning from the Nara period but it would only be during the Sengoku jidai that they got it right. The difference between levies and ashigaru was that in Japan, the ashigaru were often supplied with arms at the daimyo's expense. Previous generations had almost nothing at all.

Sword attendands destroy naginata attendants even without banzai. They are so much better. You can take on 3 fukuhara taira stacks just with 10 swords and 6,7 bow units.

As I experienced the Cav in ROS is all maximum B-Tier maybe. Everytime i charge in the Back or in Bow Units .... they don't even care and the Cav just dies.

Rise of the Samurai is very underrated. It's rare in the fact that we don't have much media, games or just sources that cover Japan's earlier periods. Love the DLC.

Best army in the game is upgraded Naginata levy with upgraded bow monk support. Bow samurai are good but are too expensive for what they do. But that Ona Bushi joke made it all worth it.

I mean, it’s lackluster. It puts a huge focus on politics. Personally, I like it, for it’s time period, and the more emphasis on politics. Though, I can see why people from normal Shogun 2 don’t like it

@@liao2211 I prefer the politics but it still lacklustre. It had more politics but the pace is relied on war side of it. Successful politics is based on making and maintaining larger coalition than your opponent, but in the game, it always ended on having stronger armies.

From my perspective, it feels difficult to make a list like this for RotS. I haven't played all too much Rise, but with my limited experience, basically all of the units feel like an incredibly linear 'upgrade' compared to the other units; simply upgrading from Levy to Attendants to actual Samurai.

Sorry if I ask that late but... Would Yari Ashigaru be a realistic unit in the Gempei war rise of the samurai era? Are the Levy Spearmen basically Yari Ashigaru? Any difference?

The one thing about Bow Warrior monks that make them good is they process the “Increased Range” ability which makes them able to outreach foot samurai and they have a lot more men then foot samurai. It means that it’s the same principle of why the Bow Hero isn’t the best archer unit just because of raw stats, it’s unit size takes away from some of its charm as a ranged unit. That’s why I think ideally you want a small amount of bow warrior monks just to have a small group of designated archers to rely on for their larger volleys combined with the more accurate ones of the samurai. And once melee combat starts and the samurai go in, the monks can keep providing covering fire from whenever they need to. That whole unit size and range thing also makes them particularly great in sieges both defensive and offensive.

@@jamiesnackIs it a shit DLC? Only thing I’ve heard people trying to justify that it’s bad is that it’s not Fall of the Samurai. A DLC so large and expansive that it can be bought by itself as its own separate game without having Shogun 2.

Rise of The Samurai Foot Samurai is what every Samurai unit in the entire game was supposed to be. A bow, or a spear unit that can do something other than just shoot or fight cavalry.

love Rise of the Samurai. I noticed that tier wise it goes Levy, attendants, Samurai, warrior monks, cavalry then Hero units. Also the Sword attendants do have banzai and should be a bit higher up. Either way still a fun video thanks for the content you got a sub. If you do end up making a serious list for Rise of the Samurai that would be Rad.

Actually your list is pretty accurate! And fire bomb throwers are as shitty as in regular shogun 2,when they start swinging their balls, everything ,including your entire army, runs away.

I actually sat down to do a RotS campaign and I can safely say that naginata levy are terrible in anything that isn't a siege defense (THAT ACTUALLY HAS WALLS). The bow levy are actually really good and I made a ton of them because almost nothing has armor in RotS. The campaign is basically almost entirely just trying to get morale bonuses as high as possible and shooting enemy armies to pieces (on Legendary.)

Generals are insanely good in this game. In regular Shogun 2, a single general might be able to take on a yari ashigaru and win if the ashigaru are tired out and you hit them from the rear; in fall of the samurai, a general might be able to kill one levy infantry by itself. In rise, purely because of its bows, a single general can easily kill two or even 3 enemy units. You can cheese entire enemy armies by using hit and run until all their melee guys are dead. They can easily kite enemy archers with enough micro, and the only thing that really counters them are mounted samurai.

Hello, I suprisingly shocked that your tier list is correct most of time despite your claim. Bow warrior monk in ROTS is not like in Shogun 2 because the stats despite increase range ability. In my experience you only need lots Foot Samurai and couple Sword and Naginata Attendants to back them up to win anything as long you don't auto resolve. Bow attendant for its upkeep and stats compare to Foot Samurai is different but you want to stick your army up to the end of campaign so Bow Attendant is sucks for long term army so I suggest just go to Foot Samurai especially Foot Samurai has whistling arrow and tanky armor. I always put Foot Samurai in the front line and never worry about being shot and charge by infantry because the multipurpose role which it the best! Levy army is the worst ever, never recruit them unless you want to put repression, especially the naginata one. Trust me. Naginata levies is easily rout and you barely had a fierce fight with this one. Better grab attendant one especially the attendant one has rapid advance. Sword attendant is surprisingly good and you should put them higher maybe A or S. They like Katana Samurai and have BANZAI ability and can destroy anything in melee as long not facing cavalry charge. Cavalry in here mostly Bow Cav so the rarely charge like in Shogun 2 and lucky for sword one, they won't need to worry about Cav Charge too much. General should be in S-Tier I think because general can fight and with their bow and they quite tanky just like Foot Samurai and they can access Stand and Fight too. On killing routing unit after victory, General in ROTS is better than Shogun 2 one I think because that bow although I use melee mode and they still shoot while charging. In ROTS siege offensive, there is no wall like Shogun 2 so archer superiority in quality and number is key to victory and easier to win with small but high quality army unlike in Shogun 2 which I think you need a lot so I rarely siege enemy out in ROTS. I don't try the cav like Mounted Samurai and Mounted Naginata right now so when I taste it I tell you guys. Correct me if I wrong.

Nice wall of text. Not too familer with ROTS myself but having fired it up recently 2 things, 1. sword attendants are more no dachi samurai then Katana samurai, they have 2 melee defense! 2. their ARE walls in ROTS you just have to upgrade the settlement past lvl 1, I can only assume the ai is still too stupid to upgrade anything that isnt its capital.

@@jaywerner8415 oh I didn't see that in sword attendant, but they good long enough to win the day. Yeah, the fortress is sucks until they have tower, the tower is much painful than shogun 2. The road unfortunately is so expensive even to the tier 2. I hardly can go fast and replenish unit quickly unlike in shogun 2. The navy was broken when all of them have fire arrows. If I can choose, shogun 2 navy is more enjoyable than ROTS, FOTS navy combat definitely the best for me.

Oh I add this too, I hope who try ROTS can have enlightenment. Jinsha***** (too hard to spell) is combination of Ishin Shi Imperial/Shigengumi Shogunate in FOTS and Metsuke Shogun 2, but cannot assassinate beside mogami (ninja).The good thing about metsuke Ishin Shi/Shigengumi like is he can convert other clan province to your own (the other clan province that you wish to convert to yours must have 50% more at least affiliation to you). If the other clan have only 1 province and you don't want to make war, you can take it without bring your army or declare the war to that clan (that is why I like this agent). However if the clan you ask for allegiance has 4 province, asking an allegiance to 1 of 4 provinces means war of that clan so be careful of doing that. Shibayaroshi is more like geisha in FOTS, good for town growth, convert agent, increase moral to army and general, stop the enemy army for one turn. Sou is basically a monk in Shogun 2. Mogami is basically a ninja and unfortunately, it is hard to train mogami unless you are near Iga Province. There are 3 affiliation, Minamoto, Taira and Fujiwara. If you example Minamoto and met Fujiwara and the clan that has affiliation to Fujiwara, both of them will likely declare war on you, trust me. However, if you met clan that have affiliation example Taira and you and the clan affiliated to Taira haven't met any 2 Taira Clan, then they rarely will declare war on you. I think that is all important thing in game.

Remind me, theMesuke in shogun 2 you can just bribe a settlement to join you cant he? i know its expensive but he can do that right? It is interesting how ROTS is more about politics then warfare when ya think about it, at least at first, just convert people to your family and boom pay a few grand to get their province. Probably the biggest turn off is the lack of units really, i mean on land you basicly have 3 choices in 2 sides of the military tree (the attendants and monks on the left, Samurai on the right), and the fire bombs, While on the sea you litterly have 3 ships with ether Attendants or samurai, plus the fire bombs. Still its a interesting campaign if you dont mind taking it slow at first.

@@jaywerner8415 oh really the metsuke shogun 2 can too? Hmm, but this one must ar least 50% affiliation to get the settlement. Levy is sucks, naginata levy is the worst 😂😂😂, trust me. I have 4 gruop foot samurai against 10 group levy naginata and they won after showering them with whisteling arrow and fire arrow. About the left and right, if you want anti cav melee, naginata warrior monk probably the best because they have warcry and better stats although attendant one is good enough at affordable price. Bow attendant is okay but I personally go straight to foot samurai. Foot samurai is a must and the best in ROTS 👍

The thing is, in this game EVERY unit with a samurai in its name is amazing, and the naginata cavalry is actually an attendant, rather than a samurai, that literally means they are trash and would almost lose to a regular mounted samurai in melee.

ROTS General do have access to Stand & Fight, but they don’t have access to the shit load of extra movement range Vanilla Generals have. Also, getting the Intimidating perk (I think that’s what it is called, the one that installs fear) is a pain to get. But units on ROTS have such shit morale that it might be worth getting tbh.

Foot samurai are the absolute best unit in the game, extremely good both in melee and range, however they lose bad to cavalry melee attacks and ranged 1v1 against bow warrior Monks is not favorable. Mounted samurai are exactly like the foot samurai but on horseback, they're extremely good. However, unlike their foot counterparts whose counter is somewhat rare, their counter is naginata units, more than a third of the roster. Also, 1v1 skirmishes against other high tier archers is very unfavorable.

Bow Levy should be downtiered because Accuracy is the most important stat for a range unit. Without Accuracy Upgrades, Bow Levy are almost useless. Sword Attendants are an excellent Garrison unit since they're affordable and 10 times better at defending a castle than Naginata Levy.

Naginata levy is a very good unit after u give them armour upgrade by recruiting in blacksmith the extra 5 armour and 3 meele attack with their huge numbers makes up quite a punch

Actually Onna Bushi are missile cav, though the worst one in the aspects of archery, but even supperior to the mounted samurai hero in melee stats, with 24 attack and 25 charge, even better then mounted naginatas.

I don’t know if CA gives naginata levy a buff yet but in campaign mode I use them as a majority in my army then bow levy. I build an armorer to give them more melee defense then they are good to go. I like them because i can buy a lot of them and when they got higher rank I don’t really have morale problem.

I made the background music really quiet as people likely don't want to listen to the same tune for 18 minutes straight. Yeah, I did say several times throughout the video that this was purely for fun and shouldn't be taken serious.

Hello those tier list video gave me an idea for new types of video on shogun 2, it's comparaison of the final campaign stats of your campaigns like for exemple with with faction did you kill most unit, with wich fation did you made most money, with wich factiond did you finish the campaigne the fastest, etc etc etc. Also i've been watching nearly all your shogun 2 campaign, i understand the campaign play, but there is one thing i don't understand, is why your yari ashigaru are destroying everything, and why my yari ashigaru are getting destroy by everthing :(

Imo bow levies are far worse than the naginata ones. Recently had a battle where the enemy had to walk/run trough a river. Those bow levies managed to kill 4 naginata levies before they reached them :/. Then they made 2 kills in melee and routed. Naginata levies are the creator of gods compared to those things, while still being shit.

you are wrong sword attendants are much better in any case. they beat foot samurai in 1v1 and any other unit. I tested it. and they have banzai too, they slay anything

What I did, thanks to the miracle of the pack file manager, was to nerf the samurai foot archers to 6 melée (originally 14), set their melée defence to 8, reduce their accuracy from 60 to either 50 or 55, and increase their numbers from 45 to 60. That makes them a very good all-round unit, but not as good in melée as naginata attendants. Now a unit of foot samurai can hold the line against advancing naginata levy, and _might_ be able to defeat them in spite of being outnumbered 2:1, but will take terrible losses unless they get help. Their excellent armour and high defence give them a lot of staying power, so they are now a force that can hold a position until help arrives, and no longer a buffed up sword attendant unit that can plough through almost anything. And they are still an excellent archer unit, so they are still worth the money.

Can anybody help can you get decent artillery on campaign mode, e.g Armstrong guns and cannons or is just fall of the samuri you can get this? Cheers

Best artillery you can get in regular Shogun 2 is Firerockets. There are European cannons and mangonels as well if you really wanna try your luck with that. the good artillery is limited to Fall of the Samurai only.

Those hero units are all way too small in rise of the samurai, please don't make them at high tier, I think most of the hero units are stay at home units.

Never past the first 10 turns in rise of samurai. This game is just like an alpha version of normal shogun 2. Soo bad.

Then it's not for you. For japanese history enthusiasts, rise of the samurai is the equivalent to a wet dream. So much of Japanese history when covered is always based on the sengoku period. Rise of samurai is unique and different in that it's set 400 years prior...

Funny, but definitely not, Three Kingdoms is fantastic. People love to hate, but it's legitimately one of their best historical titles to date.

@@unowno123 Most people are playing in Romance mode right now, have you looked at Record mode, might be more your alley, as play more like a regular Total War on the battle map.
