I’ve been doing a heightened line check and how wing looks due to the recent posts of the collapsed wing in El Paso.
It was a nile wind take off and as I was taxing and speeding up for take off I felt the left toggle seem harder to pull but nothing to weird to abort the taxi to takeoff, so I continued. As soon as I got airborne I did a quick safety check and quickly noticed the left lines look twisted, so I quickly make a turn to land to fix, but as I was on downwind, I noticed my brake was wrapped around the riser, so I let it go and everything opened up and looked much better, so I continued on my clime out as lines looked good, what I didn’t notice until I started adjusting the trimmers is that I clipped in wrong and on takeoff I wasn’t holding the riser correctly when I flipped it as I assumed I placed it on the ground correct. In hind sight I should have checked that right after I fixed the break line, but failed to do this check due to the lines looking good going to the wing. Everything was flying well and so I just though all good.
We all can get complacent and even though I have a specific preflight, I made a small mistake that could have been caught sooner but non the less still caught. I only wish my camera would have caught how I was clipped in a half turn the wrong way as an example.. This is a good example as to why safety checks are crucial and needs done on every flight as soon as you feel your at a safe altitude to check. Fly safe everyone!!
