Extinction Rebellion’s co-founder Clare Farrell and conservation scientist Dr Charlie Gardner team up once more to discuss issues and stories they feel are not getting enough airtime. They want to make sure that the latest news in science and important reports that are relevant to the climate and ecological crisis are flagged and explained in ways that are easy to understand.
EPISODE 3: Rishi backtracks, California vs. big oil, and the Dutch rebel!
Clare and Charlie discuss ultra-rich Rishi’s green about turn, the reaction from his own party and business and the culture war effect on politics in the UK. Comparing that with the governor of california who is bringing charges against fossil fuel companies for what he describes as over 70 years of deceit. If you need cheering up just look across to those Dutch rebels who have been blockading the interstate A12 road with thousands of peaceful people week in and week out. There have been some surprising reactions from the police (also in the mix with water cannons and pain grip techniques).

Why doesn't California ban oil and gas?

California can't ban 40% of their oil and gas because of lease agreements between California mineral owners and the oil companies. However, they can ban 60% of their imported oil and 90% their imported gas. So why don't they? Either they dont think climate change is caused by fossil fuels or banning fossil fuels would be worst than climate change. Thats why.

Are you really that stupid? The world can’t function without it yet. It’ll take years and years before some countries will reach that point. And there’s XR’s problem: they’re full of idiots who think the world can all of a sudden run without gas and oil. They are beyond stupid.

I think our opposition comes from a deep, foreboding, sense of an "inconvenience crisis". Status seekers and wage slaves alike are more horrified about being inconvenienced than they are about the extinction of life itself. "What? The end of shopping?! It can't happen here!" (horror emoji inserted here)

Hi John! IMHOP it's not about inconvenience, I think it's about survival and the assurance of some degree of comfort. I don't think we climate action advocates have done a very good job of conveying to people an image -- a picture -- a visualization -- of a world they can see themselves living into -- and see themselves able to be warm enough, cool enough, have shelter enough, have their needs met enough, and to be able to take care of their babies and elders. Those are the questions I field.

@@aninewforest lol extinction. I've been a soldier in full gear at 120 degrees. My town has never been above 105 degrees. The world will have to warm 15 degrees before I'm annoyed and above that I will dig an underground hut and wear a sweater. Worst case scenario Canada and Russia become the breadbasket. Lol extinction. The equator nations may need a parisol but unless you are an albino roofer you will be fine. 😂

Correction: In the Netherlands we are now into our FOURTH week people! (Day 24) This weekend about 80 'Latzte Generation' activists from Germany came over & stayed for 3 days. We are now getting beyond the tunnel very close to the government buildings. Police have eased back. Watercannon was stopped after XR applied to the courts. And ..WE... WILL...NOT...STOP!!❤❤❤

I fully back all the sentiment about the lack of climate action, but really can't see how blocking streets and annoying people is helping the cause? Why not blockade an oil refinery, camp outside the mansions of oil company CEOs, there are so many valid targets to disrupt. We need to get the 'blind majority' on board, so they will help vote out the morons making our national policies. Extinction Rebellion are seen as irrational trouble makers by the general public, this cannot be helping?

Try to mic Charlie better please, Clare is clear, but he needs a microphone adjustment. He frequently goes loud to soft. Remember we are listening on phones, in cars, on headphones etc.

Re Trains. Great way to get around Europe. Especially the extra sights you see while on them & hotel savings by doing overnight travel. Still no good for getting to America, Australia and Asia though. however some of these places have good rail networks to use when you get to them

@@EvolutionWendy Hi Wendy. Haven't experienced the US train network as have not visited America (yet), but yes Europe does have a very good network overall. Regional services in the UK &I Ireland which I'm most familiar with tend not to be as good as intercity services though

@@jonathansteel8565and the British train service is horrific. The Euro Star now runs at 65% capacity due to customs requirements after Brexit. The services are expensive & unreliable. No wonder people turn to flying! In contrast train services here in Europe are excellent. *Please note the new fast Baltic line to Poland will be starting within a year or so.

Are you protesting outside university departments who create graduates who go into the oil industry. Or civil engineering and architectural departments who effectively couldn't design affordable environmentally friendly housing for the masses, or fashion departments in art schools who use materials imported from around the globe? No middle-classes never accept responsibility for their parts in the crisis. You never question or protest why academics and the middle classes never accept responsible for something they created.

Google "Governor Jerry Brown and climate speech" and you will see his tireless work as a former California Governor to take action on climate even if his state had to do it alone. However this also gives you a view of how powerful forces were able to overcome his plans and progress.
