As the way of the internet, lots of people think Dan is a poor poker player from this video. I never said that and I don’t think it. I’m confident he will return. It could have easily gone the other way and I’d be making a different themed video.
@@AlexDuvall so true that players come and go, they come up and plenty go broke and disappear and then either regroup or move on to some regular job in life
Watching Dan play when he was first sun-running and all the incredibly loose hands he would play, hitting 2nd pair and playing and winning them like they were the nuts, it was only a matter of time to see him crash back down to earth. I feel for the guy because he is a genuinely nice and respectful dude but that style of play only wins if he's lucky too.
Unfortunately for him his downswing occurred at the Million Dollar game rather than the local $2/5 game. Timing is everything. In life there is a great deal of luck, we just don't always consider it more closely.
“You don’t hear much about guys who take their shot and miss. But I’ll tell you what happens to them. They end up humping crappy jobs on graveyard shifts trying to figure out how they came up short!” - Mike McDermott
Dan will be back, he was just playing stakes he’s never played before and wasn’t able to play his game..That combined with a bad run of cards and then throwing a party after he was tilted..tough to watch
He was already doing dumb things like calling All-in’s with Queen High prior to the million dollar game. I don’t see how he’s going to climb his way back. Who is gonna stake the guy after he lost a milly?
@@blank5210dude merked his competition on hcl and lodge with a hyper lag style making sick plays the amount of times he was right 5betting pre or calling down in dynamic boards in study worthy
@@blank5210 he built his roll playing that way, and it’s a style that puts relentless pressure on opponents and I think at these stakes he wasn’t able to make those same moves that normally work for him. He’s gonna keep playin his game and replenish the roll, I have no doubt. Mentioning garbage hands he plays is irrelevant, when you play like he does it’s way more about moving players off superior hands, a lot less about what cards you are holding
Maniac on a heater, oldest and most unsustainable story in poker. They come along and think they invented this style of play. Then smart players catch on, he cools off and goes broke. Surprise surprise
@@tommyfu9271 lol he put all the money in when he should have folded. He was always gonna bust playing they style, he got looked up over n over again. Thats what crushed him. There will another just like him go on a sun run and go broke, rampage, deniss menace will be next. These idiots dont know how to switch gears and punt it all off
Tom dwan best player on the table in debt millions lol gambling takes no prisoners. If you run the table like paul pua you get the money and gamble. It's about income with these high rollers literally playing with money they acquired doing other things. Honestly I think only a handful of pros are profitable on the table
@@JayMason-yh8es I wouldn't put much stock into dwan owing everyone, he plays in the softest games on earth, only person id believe him still owing is jungle. Rest are all gamblers with their own financial issues. Borrowing money and not paying is the only true debt in poker. That isnt the case or he wouldn't be playing this high anymore. This game specifically is the softest stream and money is huge. Its pretty simple math how much a player must sell of his action to never have risk of ruin.
At that table of players, before the action started, I would have said Dan was the second best player. And besides the last few hands shown in this video I think he played "ok" just extremely unlucky. If they run that same line-up 100 separate sessions, I'd say Dan would likely do very well. So, if you're reading this, Dan, keep your head up!! We love watching your style. It will eventually turn around.
@@preiudeh22a Good question..Can be emotionally devastating to work 20 years grinding up from lower stakes to get this kinda bankroll... Thousands of hours spent....emotional hours.....Than to lose it all or potentially all in one bad day...I mean wow.....
@@rosin4260 I thought both of these things as well while watching the video. Seems this Alex character should double check his analysis before posting his videos
If I were Action Dan and I had all of my own action & lost and dealt with those emotions then watched this video I would be full blown tilted again. Wish him the best. I get mad when I lose a little bit.
I dont think people actually hate action dan. But we've all been at the table where someone who has a pile of money sits down and tries to win literally every single hand by firing at pots. Its very annoying to play against and its always satisfying when those people get crushed.
You'd rather see the nits win all the money?? Players like Fernando? Sorry, I have to disagree w/ your sentiment. I love playing with action players, even when they are running super hot. Because the odds eventually turns around. Everything evens out over time.
@@rbaddict2947 I didn't say I hate action players...I just said they're annoying to play against. I just offered an explanation as to why people might enjoy watching them get crushed. Personally I love watching them lose because it puts more money into the game and they are always reloading.
@@Matt42020 All good, you like what you like- I can't argue with that. Me, I like to see nits/professionals get destroyed. Or egotistical chatterbox maniacs like Nik Airball get felted. IMO Dan is really good for the game, makes it more interesting, more entertaining, I root for him. Players w/ low VPIP are bad for the game in my opinion.
I will say, if you're the one getting killed by an action player then of course its gratifying to see the odds turn around when you and other hard working players start to win. But for the viewer, action players like Dan are the ones you want to see win.
I've read a few books on the lives of various poker greats (and BJ card counters) from the past. Quite a large number ended up as little more than degenerate gamblers at heart. Once they were exposed to enough unbelievably crazy drawouts/streaks that defied "the maths", they settled into that role. Others are just born degens that get an absurdly nice run of positive variance at the start of their careers.
Unless you have sponsors and endorsements like Daniel Negreanu/ Phil Helmuth etc writing books and paid just to show up and wear a logo on your shirt.. Tournaments and hotels paid etc... If it came down to just gambling and none of that other stuff included, I bet 1% would make it for a living, covering all their expenses just through gambling earnings
@@michaellester1775those odds are close. A very small percent of players are actually winning players. Even pros they just get a good win and use sponsors and bankroll management to keep their chips on the table.
I'll have $20 bounties on my head if you stack me in the cash games and a $100 bounty on my head for whoever knocks me out in the tournament. All streamed LIVE!
@@mjlives5428 that is a good point, that used to happen all the time when online high stakes was more of a thing in America - these big stream games are replacing those
Dan's run is a perfect example of IF IT RAINS, IT POURS in gambling! Some days you just feel it in your soul that no matter what you do you cant win. And sadly, those tilting times are the times hardest to stop...
Calling 250k when that King hit the river was inexusable. Could have easily gotten away there. There was only one card he did not want to see. It came, and he still called.
Wait, hold on a second. If you were in that situation, you probably would have called too given how much money was in there and the odds of the other person having the winning hand. Even if you were the 1% that would have folded, 99% of people would have called
RU-vid and streaming is about content creation let us thank action Dan for that . The original action Dan is Dan Harrington he wrote a book called Harrington on holdem.
HCL should really do a where r they now show, would be their best rated ever or most viewed show ever, anybody that hasnt appeared in 3 or 6 months get Feldman on the horn
Think about ALL the players that used to play on HCL regularly but no longer play on the livestream. It has to be at least a couple dozen players. There is no way that all of these players are busto. Makes you wonder why so many no longer play on the stream...
People like to rank overly aggressive players highly because they only remember the times these guys make other people fold a better hand. A lot of times these "good" players don't have the overall winnings to prove their rankings.
Even though it's almost impossible to fold a full house, it's a pretty easy fold on that board considering any king has one.. he was unlucky but with the paired board he could have easily saved the 250k and following tilt.
Peter’s flop raise makes a K highly likely. You groan and fold there. The issue is Dan played it trappy to keep bluffs in, so he is somewhat committed to the river bluff catch. If Dan leads the turn and gets called, the river fold is easier.
What if Peter was raising on a flush draw? Then he hits a flush and bets on river. Also this is Peter we're talking about. He bluffs and value owns himself often.
@@rbaddict2947 betting 250k on that board is crazy even with a flush because the board is double paired, meaning if he has a flush dan is more likely to have a K, so he would probably just check back on that scary board to not value own himself or get trapped. Also, let's not forget there was already almost 500k in the pot. From what I've seen, Peter is a decent player, he gambles a lot in lower stakes, hero calls a bit and puts in a crazy bluff here and there. But at these stakes he played almost perfectly and never made a huge bluff. Ofc he was extremely lucky but still made the most out of it and extracted a lot of value, especially from Dwan.
@@joaoalegria7578 Ok, agree w/ your analysis if it applies to lower stake (5-10 and below) but higher stake, players tend to use conventional wisdom against good solid players. So if I'm Peter, I know Dan Knows that King is very dangerous card, and Dan may lay down a 4 (lower full house) if it's a big bet such as 250K...so even if I'm Peter and have complete air, I can win with a big bet and not have the King. And the same applies to having a flush. He may have thought that Dan just had a high pocket pair so at first he's semi bluffing, then on river he's full on bluffing. He turns his draw into a bluff even after making his hand. You know how many times I've seen good players throw away a "4" for the lower full house in that situation?? Happens a lot. And Ive seen them sometimes lay down the middle full house (pocket 7's) also just because their opponent having a King when making a big bet is so likely. So what I'm saying is Dan may be thinking that Peter is thinking that (and he thinks it all might be a bluff of some sort even if it started as a draw for Peter), so there's an additional level where Dan knows that Peter's bet could be air based on what I just wrote above. Sorry, for the long explanation but that's what I think happened. I think Dan thought too deeply. Sometimes it works, sometimes its over thinking
@@joaoalegria7578 Read my first reply. Also want to point out if you're in Dan's shoes, K7 is sooo unlikely due to odds, and AK is also unlikely since most would 4 bet pre-flop after getting 3-betted by a loose player like Dan. If you're Dan, you know people aren't gonna respect you as much. So that's the foundation for how I'm guessing it leads to this "over thinking" by Dan..... Dan was prob thinking Peter either has King or its a Bluff (bluff's can include heart draw that got there....just cuz its a hand that got there doesnt mean it's not a bluf...we've all seen people turn their pocket Aces into a bluff on a scary board in these high-limit games). And I disagree that advanced super high limit players like Peter (who's bankroll is enormous and can make massive bluffs) would not bet a flush that got there but was weak due to a double-paired board where full houses become more likely. Again, I agree most mid-level players might semi-bluff on flop/turn but would NOT bet on river with this board after hitting their flush. Peter is different and Dan knows that. That's why Poker is so complex! Shit I got way too much time on my hands
Peter made like 6 Full Houses that weekend and cleaned up. @ 7:53, Dan DOES NOT have 7-high, he's got the bottom end of a jack-high straight. His bet isn't a bluff, its for value.
After any bad beats or coolers, it is best to walk away for 15 minutes to let the emotions run its course away from the table. Return with a clear head and refocus.
First hand, I know you want to push your GTOWizard affiliate link, but their 8max chip EV 300bb preflop ranges are different from 1000bb with 2bb ante ranges. As there is more and more play left postflop, ranges tend to get more diverse, and so A9s would probably be 4B at some frequency. 6h5h is one of the worst FDs to raise flop and barrel turn with since when you hit you have potential to get stacked in a 2000bb pot; this downside doesn't exist as heavily with the different preflop ranges or lower depth. Typically 4bettor ranges have a bit lower density of suited hands due to the high density of AKo and large pairs, which are necessarily offsuit, which wouldn't be the case as much with 1000bb ranges. Raising flop very often is probably fine, but barreling turn would be questionable when OP has a higher density of dominating FDs. The stackoff range at this depth is so narrow that a low flush is not strong enough to simply raise flop, hit, and then barrel turn and river large on an already paired board. Practically every part of the hand analysis is wrong and shallow. Saying things like "that non-turn bet really killed him" isn't really fair to the player. But HCL is primarily a show where big fish splash around; why would you try to analyze a hand from a game like this with GTO Wizard? Come on, you're better than this right?
Pretty easy answer to all this....he's sponsored by a GTOwizard affiliate. No one ever said you have to understand something to sell it lol. If they did half the salesmen in the world would lose their jobs overnight.
It's never bad to take a shot and miss if can live with it. Problem starts where you take more shots you can't afford. I hope he does the logical thing, move down stakes, get better, grind back and take another one if he feels like it.
Bunch of break even/losing players having a debate over the 80%+ elite player they cant ever obtain. Played with Dan for years only 1 player i give respect to.
Disagree that Dan folds A9hh on JJxQhh to turn aggression; it is a GTO approved play, but Dan is not a GTO player and peels marginal equity extremely wide; even if it is the correct fold, this is not even really marginal equity. If Durr ships river on the A, I do think Dan considers folding, although it is not really a guarantee.
Goes to show how important tilt management is. Guy seems like a knowledgeable player but even if he regularly plays 10/20 games and whatnot, 1 million is worth years of grinding and he just spewed that in one night
6:30 All the players should be able to read Peter like a book by now. If he is acting normal like here he is bluffing.... if he is hamming it up he has it.
Love watching Dan on HCL, but one day he just magically disappeared after the huge loss in the milli game. Hope he returns soon but I have a feeling that’s not likely 😔
@@AlexDuvall Ok, we will agree to disagree but this is why I stand by my comment. If we have a 20 good player rotation playing at a 10 player table every night for a year 5 or 6 players will come out a winner at the end of a year. How many do you think will come out a winner?
This is very true. Less than 5% are profitable. And while those at the top are profitable, a huge part of it comes from sponsorships and getting free entries in tourneys. The variance is too much, not to mention rakes.
I think when the Board hits he could jam all in. If Peter has a K with good kicker I think he is calling. Peter is Known to over call in spots and I think this is one of them.
Thats the problem with gambling. When you win, you want to play more and eventually you lose and when you lose, you lose more and more and then ypu want to quit.
Dan plays well, the A high Hands Hero Call definitely knocked out the luck light, Dan just didn’t remember Winners Tilt.. And his bluffs are too thin in spots he has very little idea where he’s at,(or mis-analysis)
@@DDpokerr I remember on a stream he said he plays a big game in toronto where he's more tighter, so im just assuming he went back to canada after getting stacked in L.A
@@snake0911 cause it’s the politics involved in high stakes, everyone wants to play with the loosey goose on stream who will call down and play with anything, has less to do with popularity and more to do with the fact that he obviously wanted to get invited to games
