Risk is a genuine classic board game that you can pick up used for a few bucks. I have three copies in my closet, all packed into one box, that I paid less than a total of ten bucks for. The dice combat is fun in this case because the game is fast and easy for the entire family. If I start with any piece of Australia, that's where I'm going to amass my army, take over the continent, and use those extra armies to take over Asia and then the entire freakin' world! If you love Risk, there's an old Fantasy Flight game called Dust that is a step between Risk and something like Axis and Allies. I haven't played Dust in years, but I remember loving it because it has multiple unit types and a very light economic system, but never turns into a slog, like Axis and Allies.
I've always loved that the different versions of Risk were actually different games! I don't know why people hate on it so much when I can recall HUNDREDS of threads maybe even thousands, on BGG asking if there were modern versions of Risk. I mean, shit, there has to be a reason why people are looking for more Risk in different forms.
“take it down to the charity shop and act like the good samaritan you think you are.” Such a fantastic line that hits on so many levels. This is why this channel is the best out there. Witty, smart, concise and honest. Love it! 🤓
If you want to fix the infantry problem, say cavalry is 3 units and cannons are 5. 5 and 10 is just too much. While I would still enjoy a game of Risk I'd rather play pretty much any of its variants (I own quite a lot of them). Still happy to see someone who isn't just shitting on Risk for a change.
The many shortcomings of the game have been well documented. But as a very light war game to teach someone who has not played these types of board games it is one of the best. Easy to understand and quickly figure out what not to do. It is still a hall of fame game for those merits alone.
Agreed, a game that I would play anytime over the horde of SLEUGs. I was given RISK for Christmas 1960, must have been first edition- wooden cubes and lozenges. And it’s not “luck” but probability, experienced players know the odds and play them.
Played this loads back in the 80s, good times. We mostly play Memoir 44 now, that’s what brought me to the channel. Great work by the way. Please review Escape from Stalingrad Z.
Awesome video, keep it up. I played this game with my friends back in the day. My top 2 problems with this game were not enough of infantry units and isolated Australia from other continents. So easy fix: if you need some infantry, just borrow some meeples from Carcassonne. it looks great on the talble. :D Also Australia problem - just draw a line with a marker across Pacific Ocean from South America (Argentina to Eastern Australia) and problem fixed. Have a great day everyone! :)
Dude I found you when searching for Duel of Ages 2 reviews. I love the intensity. Board gaming feels a little too fucking "Care bear" for my tastes. It's great to to get reviews from someone I think might stab me if I say the wrong thing.
I recall playing risk during my school holidays in the mid-70s. Judged by today's games it is a pile of pooh, but at the time it was pretty good fun for my friends and I so I regard it with a certain fondness,. even if I wouldn't play it today.
Played risk for a couple of years over 30 years ago with friends . Had some great nights ,we started with normal risk but ended up playing castle risk more.
There might be much better games today, but none of those games will ever replace the amount of fun I had as a teen and a young man both in college and recently out of college playing risk, eating pizza, and drinking beer. Some of my best memories. I have a limited edition numbered copy sitting on my shelf.
seriously how much fun was it to have an alliance, break an alliance, some of those dice rolls.......i can't think of a modern board game where I had THAT many amazing experiences
Also I suggest looking up the "Nuclear Risk" Rules which were published in Dragon Magazine circa early 1980 , but can be found in a lot of places today. You will need older versions of Risk pieces to play it though . Not these newer "cheap" miniature versions😎
The "mission" cards were borrowed from Castle Risk. Old Risk didn't use them. The wood block armies were nice, the plastic "caltrops/ asterisks" were functionally better to handle. Yes , the newer injection-molded figurines were a stupid/mal-functional idea. The plastic star/asterisks Risk pieces also were useful to use in other games or home-made war-games. Way back in the day (1978 or so) I used the plastic Risk pieces and Scrabble wood pieces to make a helluva open floor miniature space-ship battle game . 😎
Good, fair video. The game definitely deserves some respect. Easy to change the things you don’t like with house rules, and extra components are very easy to get - every charity shop will have copies of Risk.
Got myself a 2015 version from a yardsale the board seam is almost completely ripped but at least the board graphics are not damaged and it paid nearly nothing for it. I kinda want to get ever version of board game i have and going to get into the future but there is soo many different versions. Risk Star Wars look pretty amazing! Got to save some cash for it.
Risk strike i played today, it is quite fun. It may very well be the best version of risk (need more time with it) Risk starcraft is such a good time if you have a whole day and 3+ people. Plants vs zombies risk is better than it has any right to be (2 player only) And star wars risk isnt really risk, but still fun. I think Inis and Cry Havoc have made risk a lot less tantalizing, but i still get it to the table (especially plants vs zombies when it is only my wife and I)
This game is the definition of "Just roll good". Sometimes you just lose and nothing you did mattered cause you rolled bad, really feels bad game sometimes.
When attacking each die has a 41% chance of defeating a unit, meaning that you need at minimum 10% more troops than your opponent for a coin flip. By rolling more dice than your opponent your odds will go way up. If the attacker rolls 3 dice and defender 2, attacker has a 66% chance to win. While 3 dice vs 1 is approximately 90%. The game is called risk because there is no 100% sure way to win
Right on the button mate. A Legend game, great delivery of the vid, totally right on the post-its... I guess I better make some friends and invite them round. m out
If you've played other versions of Risk I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. My favorite version so far is the Star Wars version that is based on The Queen's Gambit.
Before I got into board games my friends loved playing this 15 years ago and they weren’t into games. I utterly despised this game. They would play for like 5 hours and I just wanted to eliminate someone before I was eliminated. Game doesn’t hold up well at all
Risk revised edition is literally the only board game I have and I am the only person with a board game among my friend group. I am thinking about getting a new board game not sure if I should get Kemet or Treasure Island as our friend groups iq is same as their shoe size presented in numbers when it comes to board games, thanks.
The best thing about RISK is persuading another player to do your bidding and then stab them in the back at your first convenience. Ha. Ha. Ha. Good times!
I had it when I was a kid, but now have much better games, and much less time to play so won't come back to my collection. (unless I find it in a Charity shop of course) What surprised me is that you previously dismissed games purely because of player elimination and that is a problem here as well. How did you accept that here?
@@BoardGameBollocks what if before someone could finish their mission the eliminate all troops of someone else? Maybe not trying to deliberately kick them out all, but they are in the way?
where do you want the fight..... i mean maybe risk legacy with a c+....click. but dominant strategies that are very hard to overcome and very luck-based combat makes this game feel like a kick in the nuts that just lasts hours!!!!!!! p.s definitely listen to those haters and save you're money! buy almost any other area domination game there are a million better ones.
That wasn’t my point. My point was that for such an old game Risk is still an ok time especially when you can pick it up for a couple of quid. You can’t really compare Risk with 1812 for example.
@@BoardGameBollocks i got your point but its like saying if you don't want look at the years of development to improve this crapola then buy it. Listen my gramps might have an old lawn mower that you push with no motor and might even still cut the grass but lets not be recommending it over a modern mower mate. in fact lets not be recommending it at all lets recycle them so they can made into better games. You can dump all the other hereditary board games with them at the same time and do us all a favour.
Again you missed the point. I wasn’t comparing risk to other modern games, that would be dumb. I merely said that it’s worth picking up a copy on eBay and if you do t like it you haven’t lost anything. Why are you comparing board games to lawn mowers? 🤷♂️
@@BoardGameBollocks i didnt miss the point you just don't like what I'm saying..... HAHA! Look the moterless mower is a metaphor for old Farkakte crap that old people try to pedal like its still good. It ain't good at any price. Stop trying to sell Mcdonalds to people I don't care if the burger is 1 quid its not good for you. You can get a load of area control games cheap especially now there is a reprint of cyclades coming out watch people try and sell its as fast and cheap as a lady of the night with STD's
It’s THE best table-top strategy game, hands down. Playing against 2-4 other competent players can lead to some truly amazing games. My groups has had multiple 2-day+ risk games, and I must say, those are the most sought after victories…
I actually learned after this that according to hasbro rules its escalating (ie first combo 5, next 10 and so on). But Hasbro's a bit shit. Keep up the bollocks@@BoardGameBollocks
