Viewed in context, this is a very powerful song. When this film was shot, the Allies had turned the corner but things were far from over. The war in the Pacific looked like it would last forever due to Tokyo's refusal to surrender (no one knew about the atomic bomb). This song was a call to keep spirits from flagging even as millions continued to die (The chorus sings "We're gonna fight / Because we're right") and was aimed primarily at those on the home front. Greatest generation, indeed.
